one from the early 80s.
You'll need blades of wood , plastic ( Glassfibre) Rotation
diameter of 1,5 / 2 meter. The whole must rotate continually
thru 360 degrees. (sliprings !) You will need stepping up
gear.
There are several designs on vertical axis , mostly with low
efficiency and some are not self starting. ( like the
Darrieus) Halved Oil-Barrels have even be used.(Vertically
split and offset, the wind catches in the hollow sides)
Sturdy but heavy and slow too. Look at Farm water pump
towers.
The bearings , in continual use will last 7 years or less.
You must surpass objects which hinder the airflow or use
them cleverly.
There are cheap designs ( using cloth, or other) or small
output designs) Edmund , check their website.

There are probably some companies left which will be able to
send plans for high tec. designs. The Ideas I layed out are
not. but cheap and homemade. The power gained will be raise
by the square, of the windspeed , or diameter of the
contraption. In Storms the power is considerable. In low
winds the power is negligible. Do a site survey, get a cheap
recording anemometer ( adresses for the asking) Hillside
tops are best.
VE2 ? Youre in Canada? Winter, Storms , Ice , acessibility ?
Check that out. As in Solar panels you will need batteries.
lots of them? Make a power survey...how many Amps / hours. A
good book will answer many of these questions. Shielding
your alternator from the rain, heat , dust, cold etc. And
still keep it moveable.
You might find it very hard to reproduce aircraft
propellers, Use a straight design for a length of blade. Or
go very simple with a flat , inclined blade. Fixed pitch.
Check some Farming Magazines.
Check Farming companies, Windmill towers/ Water/Pumping.
Bicycle wheels have been used, the outer rim carrying a belt
which gives a high speed-up to the generator wheel
underneath. Unused spokes removed , the other ones carrying
some metal (or other) fins to catch the wind.
Look at alternatives, Solar Panels ! No gears , little
rotation.
