I did an update for this yesterday and everything went fine.

That is until this evening when the PC wouldn't boot Windows :-(

The last Windows Update requires a reboot for the changes to take effect.
As I did the update just before going to bed, I didn't bother with the
reboot and just shut the PC down.

Today, the PC started to load Windows (Windows 2k Pro on this machine) but
it never got passed the text mode screen with the progress bar on the
bottom. The ominous sounding error message "Loader error=3" was displayed
along with advice for me to contact Microsoft.

Oh 'eck!

A quick boot of a Knoppix Live CD enabled me to run up Linux on the PC and
check that the disk appeared to be working. A search on Google showed the
fix is simple.

Boot Windows CD, select repair option and then console option. This
effectively chroots to the existing Windows setup on the hard disk.
Then...

1) CD \
2) ren ntldr ntloader
3) x: (where x is the drive holding the Windows CD, in my case G:)
4) copy i386\ntldr c:\
5) exit

The PC will reboot and everything should be sorted. My system seems fine
now.

Now I'm not blaming Microsoft update for this as I did some other PC
housekeeping duties including uninstalling some demo programmes that had
timed out. It was probably the uninstall of one of those that hosed ntldr.

However, if you do perform a Windows Update and your Win 2k machine wont
boot then this is probably the fix you are looking for.

It also shows the value of having a bootable CD that allows you to access
your internet connection too. I've not heard of any Windows systems you can
boot from CD that dont require you to install them to the disk, but there
are lots of Linux bootable CDs about. I happened to use a recent Knoppix
one.
