Hi Ralph and ETs,

Sorry OM, your Earth to Mars calculations are way off and don't include
several important parameters. The key here is "broadband" which reduces
that megawatt considerably over occupied bandwidth right at the
transmitter. Then when it gets to Mars you have very little hope of
receiving a useful signal under normal conditions, that is without a
MASER for one thing. That's why our space probes use narrow band and long
transmission times for the low data rate. If you can concentrate all your
power in SSB, why waste it with AM? Any ham knows that, I'm surprised you
didn't take that into consideration.

Then you have drift to consider, this has "Doppler shifted" away from the
original topic but still interesting. (;->)
