Actually Warren the SETI receiver at the Parkes radio telescope runs in
parallel, ie the telescope was doing it own work and the SETI receiver was on
another frequency.
The receiver was in a separate 19 inch rack on a floor below the main
operation room and had extra shielding over the rack to keep noise in/out.

I don't know the exact details but we were told that it
was a parallel receiving function.

If I remember correctly, it was some years ago, the separate antenna could be
steered independantly, presumably over a small range.
Someone reading this may have more detailed info.
Incidently the Parkes telescope was the one featured in the film "The Dish".
The film was about the first moon landing.
