You've simply demonstrated that we would have a very hard time
detecting TV or radio signlas like our own coming from the
nearest star system, Alpha Centuari. The SETI folks know this
well, better than you, I dare say. But TV and radio is NOT what
their looking for, they're looking for *beacons*. This business
of 'eavesdropping on ET' isn't what they claim to be doing,
that's what the *media* claims they're doing.

SETI is in its infancy. Looking for nearby beacons is the best
we can manage at this time. Maybe there aren't any, at least
none that we can detect... or maybe there are. We'll never
know unless we look. And *that's* what they're doing. Better
searches that can detect those exceedingly faint "domestic"
alien signals will have to wait for the next generation of
receivers, perhaps even something with huge dishes in space
or on the Moon.
