Hello Allan and readers,

Just who the heck is this Leonard David anyway? The title "Senior Space
Writer" gives him no credentials in the scientific community, he's a tech
writer is all. He makes that quite obvious with his ignorance of the
findings of previous missions and a total misunderstanding of basic
chemistry.

First of all, no sufurous compouns have been found in the atmosphere of
Mars to date. Second, no reaction that produces sufuric acid produces
hydrogen sulfide or any related compound as a byproduct. That's commonly
produced by heating a mixture of sulfur and powdered iron which acts as a
catylist in combining the sulfur with hydrogen found in water locked in
it's molecule. Heating sulfur alone produces anhydrous sulfur and water.
I should know, it was my favorite stink bomb. (;->)

Somehow I have come to the conclusion that SETI is on the wrong track.
Instead of looking for extraterrestrial intellegence they should be
searching for signs of intellegence within their own staff. It will be an
amazing feat finding it if that article is any indication.
