You touched on something which has always puzzled me,Pete.

We just don't have fraternities and sororities in the UK and can't
understand them. The three Greek letters are even more puzzling as they
don't seem to stand for anything.

There is even a TV programme called GREEK on TV with the middle two 'Es'
as capital Sigmas to make it look more greek and that one baffles us.

We prefer to be individualists in the UK with the exception of some semi
secret groups like the Freemasons which do have their uses. Our badges and
medals tend to be small and only worn on special occasians such as old
soldiers wearing their medals on Remembrance Day then putting them away
for the rest of the year.
My badge is the Gliding 'C' the solo Glider pilot's badge. Yes it is
supposed to be bad form to wear it but I put it on under certain
circumstances if I think I am going to run into another glider pilot and
swap stories, otherwise it stays in the drawer. It is a world wide badge.
There are A,B.C, Bronze C,Silver C,Gold C and the very rare diamond C, so
I thought you might have heard of it. There is a very subtle tie which
goes with it and wearing that is not considered 'showing off'.

It took me a year of stopping smoking and a lot of work and money to get
that badge so, yes, I am proud of it. All it does now is bring back fond
memories as there is no way I could afford to fly now.

I think I'll leave the prefect bit alone now:-)
