Tom, search the internet again and you'll find lots of designs for simple
to make antennas that will only cost a few dollars in materials.

There's loads of designs ranging from simple yagis using wooden booms and
stiff wire elements, egg-beaters, Lindenblatts, volutes, axial mode helices
etc. I'd be surprised if the AMSAT website didnt have links to simple to
make antennas. Failing that your friend is Google.

If you make omnis then you wont have to track the satellite. But yagis,
dishes etc will have more gain but you'll need rotators of some kind. 

Swings and roundabouts unfortunately.
