** ANS welcomes the opportunity to publish your good news of success in
working a new satellite, new DX, new mode, etc. We also print reports
about what space related activities your local satellite groups and ham
clubs are doing. Send your operating reports to JoAnne (wb9jej@amsat.org)
and they will be printed here.

** Bruce Paige, KK5DO, AMSAT VP-User Services & Awards Manager says that
congratulations go out to Jean-Claude Bernard, F6IXI, for earning his Oscar
Satellite Communications Achievement Award. He is receipient #365.

** Bruce also says congratulations go out to Reinhard Sual, YB0KTQ, for
earning his Oscar Satellite Communications Achievement Award. He is
receipient #366. To see this award and a list of other awards, visit

** Domenico I8CVS reported a succesful K-band (24 GHz) QSO was made on
AO40 orbit #1020 on January 20 with Amato I6PNN. A few minutes later
Domenico made another contact on 24 GHz with IT9UJY.

Amato was uplinking in L band and he was receiving simultaneously on
the S and K bands. He also succeeded in retransmitting the SSB signals
received on K band from i8CVS and iT9UJY via the S band downlink. His
24 GHz station consists of a 60 cm dish and a circularly polarized feed
with a homebrew low noise preamplifier and converter all connected with
wave guide.

** Masaji JH1AOY reported success with a K-band loop back test on AO-40
orbit #1021. He up linked 1269.367MHz (L1) LSB and received a good down-
link on K band USB. The K-band middle beacon peak signal strength was
3.5 S-units above the noise level.

** Michael OH2AUE heard via his good friend Masa JA1ATI that JI5MFZ and
JA1AUH had a successful K-band QSO on AO-40 on January 21 at MA 130. The
U and L1 uplinks required 500-700 watts EIRPC for the SSB K-band signals
to be heard at 54 to 57 reports. The QSO was at 27 kHz above the middle
beacon.

** Frank K0BLT summarized his success with AO-40. He said, "I have been
QRV on AO-40 since October 23, 2002 and I have worked 248 unique calls on
the bird." His list of stations worked includes Asia, North America, South
America, Europe, the Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand. "It's
been great fun. 73 and thanks to all for making it happen," was Frank's
closing comment.

** Kyle K0KN has had success getting started on AO-40. Kyle says he's
had a number of QSOs with his downlink equipment consisting of an 18" dish
with helix feed and Cal Amp 31732 converter. His uplink is on U-band, 20w
to a KLM 18c antenna. Kyle described his starting station, "My setup is
very much temporary for now. I've recently moved and have yet to
permanently
locate my antennas. I also plan to build a patch feed in the future."
And, he adds a note to all the Elmers out there, "I have really learned a
lot from the ideas and information I've read here on the BB. Thanks to
everyone! A special thanks to Jerry, K5OE for all of the help off-list."

[ANS congratulates F6IXI and YB0KTQ. Thanks to KK5DO, I8CVS, I6PNN, IT9UJY,
JH1AOY, OH2AUE, JA1ATI, JI5MFZ, JA1AUH, K0BLT, and K0KN for this week's
operating update.]
