During today's press conference several of the STS-83 astronauts talked
about their planned amateur radio activities.
Jim Halsell KC5RNI - It will be my privledge to do a number of SAREX
contacts. We have a total of 16 [educational contacts] - just about one
for every flight day we're going to be up there. They're with schools
around the world.
Roger Crouch N0CALL - I will be talking a school in my home town in
Tennessee, the Tsinghua university in China, and a middle school in
Okinawa, and Morris County Colledge in New Jersey. So all of those seem to
be varied backgrounds and kind of interesting and I'm real excited about
that.
Janice Voss KC5BTJ - I got my license because I fly on space shuttles. I
think the SAREX program is a great chance to connect the flights with
people on the ground and I wanted to make sure that - at least when I flew
- there would be a chance for SAREX to fly because I would know that there
was one ham radio operator on board. I got my license shortly after my
first space shuttle flight [STS-57].
Don Thomas KC5FVF - For me the objectives of the SAREX programs are to
educate young kids, get the students involved in math and science. I got
my license a few years ago. This is my third shuttle flight, and third
time that I've flown with SAREX [Ed: previous flights STS-65 and STS-70] so
I'm a strong supporter of the program. It's just amazing how the kids get
so excited and enthused about the passes we have. We have eight or ten
minutes as we pass overhead to talk to the kids, but they just fire
questions off to us - and you can just hear and feel the enthusiasm they
have. If we're sparking their imagination, getting them involved in math
and science for the future, then that's what this program is all about and
we're excited to be a part of that with them.
In regards to a question about the fire on Mir and whether or not the crew
had the opportunity to talk to Jerry Linenger aboard Mir commander Jim
Halsell added "I'm looking forward to talking to Jerry to talk to him about
the details. I suspect I won't have the capability to [talk to Jerry]
before our launch. I do think when we're on board Columbia in orbit we
might have the opportunity to make one SAREX pass with Mir as we have a
close conjunction. We might be able to communicate with him via amateur
radio. So maybe we could bring up a quick question at that time about [the
fire]."
