The Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched into the partly cloudy skies of the
Kennedy Space Center today initiating the second historic mission to the
Russian Space Station MIR. Despite low cloud ceilings which threatened
liftoff, the STS-74 launch occurred on time at 12:30:25 UTC (7:30 EST). An
8 day mission is planned with a KSC landing set for Monday November 20.

On-board the Space Shuttle Atlantis is the Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment
(SAREX). SAREX provides the opportunity for school students and ham radio
operators to talk to the astronauts while on-orbit. Five school groups have
been selected to have a 4-8 minute opportunity to talk to the Shuttle crew.
Contacts with the general amateur radio community is not expected until
after MIR docking occurs around MET 2 days 18 hours.
