Hmm, the problem there is that you'd have Mir or the shuttle in the middle
of the pileup trying to get through with everybody else!

I think you missed the point of my message Gregory.  I'm not saying that
the accidental contact is desirable - actually you could think of it as a
form of interference - two hams accidentally using the same frequency at
the same time.  But it would be interesting to hear if Shannon ever
accidentally heard the shuttle calling out to people on the ground ...

See other postings from me about times when direct ship-to-ship contacts
were attempted and accomplished.  In each of those cases the
astronaut/cosmonauts knew about the conjunctions and were trying_ to make
contact, and used a separate simplex frequency to avoid the 145.55 rush
hour.
