AUSTRALIA [and non] CVC - So indeed shortwave appears to be a done deal
for Christian Vision. And yes, the governmental body that operated the
Australian broadcasting transmitters at this time closed the Darwin/Cox
site in 1997, following budget cuts for foreign broadcasting. It is also
correct that in 2000 the site had been leased to Christian Vision for ten
years, and probably (although not necessarily) they simply let the lease
run out now instead of renewing it. Now the question is if Broadcast
Australia or another operator will step in. It could happen, but I would
not count on it.
Concerning the transmission equipment: At present it consists of one of
the original Collins transmitters from 1968 (three such rigs are still in
use at Sackville, too) which can now be manually tuned only, requiring
about 15 minutes. Otherwise there are three rather modern Thomson
transmitters, two originally delivered to the Cox site in 1994, the third
one moved in from Carnarvon after this site had been closed in 1996.
Reportedly Christian Vision brought in two Continental 100 kW transmitters
from somewhere, replacing the two other old Collins rigs. Perhaps they are
not in use at all, or is there a time when more than four frequencies are
on air simultaneously?
Next question: How about CVC Spanish and the [Santiago-CHL] Calera de
Tango transmitters? I would not count on Christian Vision keeping their
shortwave activities in Chile either.

Service rather in Azeri to AZERBAIJAN mainland "... an Azeri-language
radio station intended to let Azeris know what they are thinking."
(wb)
ARMENIA [and non]. Armenian Radio Voice of Justice has "LITTLE EFFECT" in
Azerbaijan.
Armenians and Azeris have looked with distrust over the front lines around
Nagorny Karabakh for 15 years, but one small group of Armenians is trying
to change that.
Since 1997, they have broadcast for half an hour, four times a week, what
they call Voice of Justice, an Azeri-language radio station intended to
let Azeris know what they are thinking.
Karabakh, which has declared unilateral independence from Azerbaijan, once
had a significant Azeri population but they fled during the war for
control of the region.
The station output appears to be having little effect, however. Officials
in Baku have said the broadcasts are just propaganda, while refugees
tracked down by IWPR said they would not listen to them, and called the
carefully-crafted reports biased.
"We are just trying to show the Azeris that a new war would bring only
harm to our peoples. Despite the fact that the policies of Azerbaijan are
today preventing a solution to the conflict, we are convinced that the
final word will belong to our peoples," said Mikael Hajian, director of
the station.
Hajian is a linguist who studied in Baku and speaks Azeri like a native.
"Azeri is a beautiful language, with many of its own characteristics, and
it is very similar to Armenian," he said.
The station staff is mainly made up of Armenians who fled Azerbaijan
during or before the conflict. They prepare reports every day, and try to
remain up to date. On one occasion, they heard an Azeri child on Radio
Liberty asking that his contemporaries in Karabakh also speak out against
war.
"Our radio station quickly made a series of programmes in which Karabakh
children said 'no' to war, and told all about their experiences and the
horrors they had seen," Hajian said, adding the station was careful to be
unbiased in its reports.
"You will never hear a bad word about the Azeris. We sometimes criticise
[Azerbaijan president Ilham] [brackets as published] Aliev and the current
authorities, but never the people. If a journalist has prepared material
that has a negative feel, I make sure to remove it, and I am proud of
this," he said.
The station is a rare link between the two countries that have had no
diplomatic relations since the end of the Soviet Union. Clashes between
Armenians and Azeris over the control of Nagorny Karabakh started even
before the fall of communism, shooting over the front line remains a
danger for local residents, and relations between the peoples are poisoned
to this day.
A peace process, chaired by Russia, France and the United States has
failed to make much progress since the war ended with a ceasefire in 1994,
and hundreds of thousands of refugees are still in limbo. The station
transmitter is not powerful enough to be heard in Baku, but officials in
the Azerbaijan capital said they took it seriously as a source of Armenian
propaganda.
"The Armenian Voice of Justice is not the only one. There are also radio
channels being broadcast from Iran and propagandising separatist ideas
against Azerbaijan. It was to fight such broadcasts that President Ilham
Aliev issued the decree Strengthening Azerbaijan's TV and Radio Space. The
communications ministry conducts this work, they even get specific money
for this," said Togrul Mamedov, assistant to the chairman of Azerbaijan's
television and radio council.
The station's broadcasts are not aimed at officials, however, so IWPR
journalists in the Azerbaijan capital contacted some refugees in the west
of the country to see if the Armenians' message was getting through.
Two refugees had never listened to it, and the one who had was not
impressed. "Once, a couple of years ago, I listened to a report by this
radio station, which apparently is called Voice of Justice. I really did
not like the content of the broadcasts, since it appeared from their words
that Azeris were falsifying the history of Karabakh," said Kerim Kerimli,
a journalist and a refugee from Shusha. "I did not listen to it again."

Comment on "New 1000 kW mediumwave transmitter in Bangladesh".
Bangla Desh being one of the poorest countries of the world, DRM in this
part of the world is totally ridiculious, IMHO. So if I were BaDesh chief
engineer I would block the DRM button. Fact is that you cannot buy high
new powered AM transmitters without DRM option, and it is only for
propaganda reasons the DRM club mentions this new TX. AM (analogue) is a
very good distribution medium in Bangla Desh, it's river delta, causing
many problems for the population, has just one good feature, very high
conductivity for AM signals.

Is indeed interesting to note the difference in the beam heading for the

and you'll find links to seperate programme items such as news, commentary
or even pieces of music. Click

for the opening with interval signals, Korean announcements and National
Anthem. Under

<http://www.kcckp.net/krt/download.php?news_id=end.wav>
you'll hear the closing announcement and again the National Anthem. You
may also download the files onto your computer. Download or online opening
of files may be rather slow. Sometimes the offer doesn't work at all.
Let's hope they will soon extend the service to all foreign language
programming as well.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev proposed on Thursday to consider cutting
the number of time zones in the country, which spans 11 time zones. During
his state-of-the-nation address to Russia's parliament he also suggested
discussing the use of daylight saving time and standard time. "All the
advantages of economizing and evident inconveniences in changing time are
necessary to assess.
I hope experts will give us objective answers to these questions," the
Russian president said. Russia was divided into 11 time zones in 1919. The
Soviet Union adopted the system in 1924. The country changes to daylight
saving time starting from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday
in October. Last July, the industrial policy committee at the Federation
Council, the upper house of Russia's parliament, proposed abolishing
daylight saving time over adverse health effects.

(Kim Andrew Elliott <www.kimandrewelliott.com> via Mike Terry, dxld Dec 9)
The transmitter complement for VOA site B is as follows:
3 x Continental 420A 500 kW transmitters
3 x General Electric 250 kW
1 x BBC[Switzerland] 500 kW
1 x AEG S4005-500 500 kW
1 x Continental 617A SSB transmitter used for DRM.
There are not any Marconi transmitters at this VOA Greenville B Site.
(Glenn Swiderski, IBB Greenville NC-USA, dxld Dec 13)
However, is GA really still "standing by"? I heard hints that it is now
officially shut down and that the transmitters get step by step
cannibalized for spare parts to keep site B operational.
Further hints indicated that the 500 kW Doherty modulation transmitters in
fact never achieved more than 350 kW. One can hardly copy it, but don't
they discuss in part 4 that it will perhaps not be possible to keep these
transmitters for very long anymore? Is it meanwhile time to wonder when
the day will come and IBB starts to lease airtime for Radio Marti and this
little bit of VOA Spanish and Creole from either WHR, the CBC, RNW and/or
TDF?
If it is not known yet: Site B is a clone of site A. The most notable
difference are the two prototype transmitters from 1986, here it are a
Telefunken and a Brown Boveri instead. These prototypes had been purchased
for evaluation, raising hopes of a modernization of Greenville which never
happened (and raising hopes for a big order at Continental, ABB and
Telefunken that went out into the blue as well).
But this evaluation led to a decision in regard to the equipment to be
used for the Briech (Morocco) and Udon Thani (Thailand) sites. They choose
the Marconi design (prominently featured in part 1), but the transmitters
have not been build by Marconi, instead by a Cincinnati-based company that
never made transmission equipment before. Marconi provided them with the
blueprints, who knows under which kind of arrangement. It could be related
to Marconi's withdrawal from the broadcast equipment business.

ramblings about salvation. Paused at 1802 UT with a station identification

barely could copy the remainder of the station break, then right back to
the Preacher and his sermon. Signal was fluttery at times fairly good and
then just fading right out. Understand they are still in testing phase.
Wonder when they will go into full programming.

Dear Glen[n], Thanks for report. We are now in testing mode only. Hours of

they are printed. Preachers are from Smyrna Baptist Church in Pensacola.

you for listening!

Hi - I just spoke with Scott Mock, the owner of this new station. They are
still in the testing phase, running 1,000 watts into a two element quad.
He says they are testing (but not always on) between 9 AM and 5 PM
Central. 1500-2300 UT. Scott added that he will QSL and gave his email as
<wjhr @ usa.com>
The call stands for John Hill Radio. He was the guy who recorded the
church service programming that the station is playing.
(Hans Johnson, Dec 15, Cumbredx mailing list via dxld)
WJHR testing for months before regular shortwave broadcasts.
A new Christian shortwave station has begun test transmissions in Milton,
Florida. WJHR started test broadcasts in mid-November, and will continue
testing daily on 15550 kHz on the 19 meter band. Tests are conducted at
different times between the timeframe of 0300-1100 UTC (from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. Central time), says station owner Scott Mock in an interview with
DXing.info. Mock hopes to be able to begin regular broadcasts in March or
April 2010, when frequency may be changed to somewhere around 13.8 MHz.
Even during regular operation, WJHR will continue to broadcast only during
local daytime hours.
WJHR is a Christian radio station and plans to air programming by
fundamentalist Baptist churches. "Right now I am financing it myself, but
eventually churches will be donating money to keep it on the air," Mock
explains. Unused airtime will be available for others as well. "If people
want to buy airtime, we'll certainly sell it," Mock says.
A 50-kilowatt transmitter and an antenna directed north are located in
Milton, close to Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle. Mock says he has had
some antenna problems, and is currently in the process of getting the
antenna replaced. Transmitter power is now around 10 kW, but will increase
to the maximum 50 kW by the time regular broadcasts begin. There is no
studio, and all programming is pre-recorded. "It's not a fancy operation,
but it gets the job done", Mock describes to DXing.info.
Unlike nearly all other shortwave broadcast stations, WJHR plans to
transmit only on SSB. Current tests can be heard on the upper side band
(USB). SSB is used because "it is far more economical and almost everyone
can receive SSB", Mock explains.
Mock says he really wants to hear from DXers how well the signal is
getting out, and he will be printing QSL cards next year. Reception
reports are welcome by email to
<wjhr @ usa.com> or by writing to Radio Station WJHR, 5920 Oak Manor
Drive, Milton, FL 32570, USA. DXer Glenn Hauser in the U.S. was the first
to report hearing WJHR on December 8.

WWRB - Range Station.
Hi Glenn: We have received lots of Emails on the Four Course Radio Range
station located here at WWRB shortwave: Power is 50 watts, frequency is
28210 kHz, four Adcock vertical antennas, raised ground plane counterpoise
5 feet off the ground, 50 feet in diameter operated in phase / out of
phase link switching keying.
Primary N main lobe direction: 37 / 217 degrees.
Primary A main lobe direction: 127 / 307 degrees; centered on WWRB
shortwave
lat: 35 37 50 N, longitude 086 00 50 W. Range is on the air 24/7 hrs/d.
The Four Course legs for now are: 352, 082, 172, & 262 degrees outbound.
We plan on bending a 'range leg or two, that is in the future. We are
building a web site for this project so others can build one if they like.
The 'range station is located by the new Runway 18 / 36 we plan on
building here at WWRB shortwave. Listeners can hear the Morse letter N or
the letter A some listeners will hear the steady 'on course' 'beam'; some
will hear all of the signals jumbling about. All kinds of propagation
studies can be made with this 'range station / beacon. Propagation
conditions can change minute to minute allowing listeners to hear one
letter then the other. Back scatter, multipath propagation, selective
fading, name it.

Comment by Noel from Blackpool too:
"...and it's very good once again. I think it is as up to date as any book
can possibly be, and then it's up to us to keep it that way by noting the
changes we read about. Computer technology now means that the book can be
produced much earlier than it used to be. Mr.Frost did very well, though,
when he managed to get it delivered for Christmas.
