ANGOLA 4949.746 Radio Nacional de Angola, 2020 UT, Portuguese, full
audio and great local music, enthusiastic male announcer with many local
time checks. \\ 7216.764 kHz, which had much weaker audio. 3 Oct.

ARGENTINA Yiddish music. <http://www.radiojai.com.ar/OnLine/>
Der stream fuer die lfd. Sendungen ist mir bekannt. Ich habe mich nicht
richtig ausgedrueckt.

BRAZIL 4885.000 Rdiff. Acreana, 2031, Portuguese, male reverb
announcer, mention of "Rio Branco" and many ments "Brasil." Finally into
nice ballad at 2036 UT. Peaking nicely with my local sunrise. Several
other possible Brazilian long-paths today but this was the strongest.

The reactivated station on 9675 kHz, R. Cancao Nova, Cachoeira Paulista
SP, no doubt the source of Brazilian dialect religious talk, Oct 4 at 0601
UT, peaking S=9+12 but with deep fades. Modulation rather distorted, but
carrier stable. Stronger than other Brazilians on 31mb air, 9645v and even
weaker 9565 kHz. Hardly any sign of WYFR 9680 kHz to bother, unlike super-
signal it sometimes has.

CANADA 6159.96 CKZN, St Johns, at 1900-1920 UT on Oct 4, still slightly

CHAD 4905 R. Nationale Tchadienne, Gredia, found active today, 04 Oct,
at 1815-... UT, with a prgr in Arabic, talks, some music at 1836 UT and
then reading something like messages (or announcements, obituary?), tribal
tunes at 1849 UT, 45333.

[later] Further to my earlier report today, the N'Djamena tx went off at
1859 UT, and then I switched to 6165 kHz to see whether something African
was detectable - and it was indeed, but the stn audible underneath Croatia
may be Zambia's R. 2 instead. As to 7120 kHz, no signal there.

Shifted to USB and tuned up to 6025.04 kHz for best readability after 0300

diminishing QRM. Many devotional talks, ocnl hymns and praise music and

6025.03 R Amanecer, Santo Domingo, 0450, Oct 05, Spanish? praise songs in
the clear for about 3 mins after co-channel VOIRI Arabic had broken down,
then continued to presumed 0455 UT close . Ron Howard reported 0306 UT
s/off, perhaps they are running late on Sundays? No ID, but pretty sure it
must be them. Will keep an eye on this just in case VOIRI suddenly
disappears again.

I am sure you are hearing them! On Oct. 5, I tuned out at 0438 UT and they
were still on. Bruce Churchill (So. Calif.) noted the sign off about 0455
UT, just as you did. On Oct. 4, I heard them sign off about 0403 UT. So
this really needs more monitoring to tell if they have a different
schedule just for the weekend.

Mittags fast senkrecht stehen.

Wasserrohren zusammengeschweisst.

To post the information and pictures about the "Project 6050" that I
posted before in the German A-DX list on DXLD in English, too. So here are
some infos and pictures to those who are interested in the development in
Quito, Ecuador:

Initial plans from HCJB global and the LAR (Latin America Region) had been
that the regional programming on 6050 kHz should be continued from Mt.
Pichincha where also HCJB FM and AM (690 kHz) are operating. Due to new
strategy and lower Donations due worldwide recession the plan to move one
of the HC-100 to the "Quito-Antenna-Mountain" had to be cancelled.

But there have been many fixed frequency radios that have been handed out
to people far away from the big cities in the region that are still in use
and the programming in the indiginous languages are still heavy needed on
the shortwave band. So a lot of talks have been made by all people
involved and finally a solution has been found to continue the broadcasts
at 6050 kHz:

The freqency 6050 kHz will be moved to the Mt. Pichincha and operated by a
transmitter with about 10 kW power. It shall be on Air for about 16-17
hours a day, 365 days a year. A new schedule has just been prepared with
some major changes to provide more programming in the indiginous
languages. The new location is planned to be [start] on air in November
09. VozAndes Media will be responsible for operating this transmitter.

In order to build the new antenna, antenna lines, fences etc. some so
called "Mingas" have been planned to transpose the plans to reality.
"Minga" or "Minka" is a term for "community work" in the Quechua Language.

The first minga has been made on Saturday two weeks ago. The goal was to
dig some holes for foundations for the antenna masts, the guy wires and
the fences. 38 men and women came to work voluntarily on that project.
I've uploaded some pictures from the minga on the 19th of Sept 2009:

<http://www.pappradio.de/bilder/minga1/1.JPG>
<http://www.pappradio.de/bilder/minga1/13.JPG>

Yesterday (3rd of October) the second minga has been made to build up the
antenna towers for a lazy-H antenna that shall brodcast on the 6050 kHz
frequency. Here are some pictures from that event:
<http://www.pappradio.de/bilder/minga2/1.JPG>
<http://www.pappradio.de/bilder/minga2/25.JPG>

A (German) report on the minga and some other news from the HCJB World
Office Germany and VozAndes Media in Ecuador can be found on
<http://www.hcjb.de/index.php?id=206>

I'll keep you informed about the latest developments at the project. :-)
Greetings from Germany and 73, Stephan
(Stephan Schaa-D, dxld Oct 4)

The analog German programming for Mexico and South America have stopped at
30.9.2009.

What's still on the air from Pifo is as following:
6050 kHz 50 kW (until the TX on Mt Pichincha is ready)
11920 kHz in Port. 100 kW (until 15.11.2009)
11705 kHz in Port. digital, 4 kW (until 15.11.2009)
15280 kHz in German, digital, 4 kW (until 15.11.2009)

I think the reason for those programms that are still on the air to mid of
November is that these (except 6050 kHz) are all transmitted by two
relative simple rhombic antennas which can be brought down very quick
until the end of the year. The German - as well as the Spanish - programs
have been transmitted via the last curtain antenna that was up in Pifo
(north-south direction). This may now be brought down next.

The German service for South America now transmits over the CVC Chile
TXers from 2300-0000 UTC on 9865 kHz.

EQUATORIAL GUINEA 5005 R Bata hrd Sept 18 from 0502 UT tune w/ nice S3
signal - local dance mx, some C&W and ocnl man ancr in Spanish. Signal
faded almost instantaneously between 0530-0531 UT in the middle of a C&W
vocal - might have been xmtr problem as this station has been hrd fairly
well until 0600 UT as of late - R Bata has an unstable xmtr on many nights
with unpredictable sig lvls. SINPO 34333 w/ QRM from WWV/WWVH, but overall
one of the best nights for R Bata - until 0530 UT. To minimize the WWV
QRM, I used the Perseus filter offset by shifting the 3.8 kHz filter width
up by 0.4 kHz.

Re DW Arabic. As you can see they dropped the Arabic section on the
shortwave band. I guess this is one of the worst news ever for Arabic
SWL/DXers :(
wanna bet who's next ????
in Arabic language we will have:
KBS-South Korea
NHK- Japan
CRI- China
RRI - Indonesia
VOK- North Korea
RBB- Bangladesh
AIR - India (suppose that one will vanish soon)
IRIB
TRT
from Asia

BBC
RFI
Radio Nederland W
Radio Sweden
REE - Spain (guess that'll vanish soon as well)
Radio Romania
VOR - Russia
in Europe

and of course RCI - Canada from North America.

I recall the days of the 80s when almost every radio stn had an Arabic
section ... even RAE-Argentina tested that for some time. Radio Praha,
Radio Afghanistan, Radio Polonia, Radio Peace and Progress ... and the
list goes on and on. Is it, I'm getting old ... or usage of SW is
shrinking ??? hmmmmmI guess both :(
all the best guys

MADAGASCAR 5009.943 Radio Malagasy, 2048 UT, nice ballads and covers,
including reggae version of Leo Sayer's "When I Need You." Don't get to
listen every day at this time but seem to think they stay on late local
weekends, as nominal sign-off is listed as 1900 UT. Pulled plug mid-song
at 2053 UT. Excellent signal. 3 Oct.
(David Sharp-NSW-AUS, dxld Oct 4)

MEXICO 6104.781 XEQM Candela FM, 0914, weak with Spanish ballads, best
in LSB to escape weak carrier (and resulting het) on high side. Thought
this might be possible since CFRX (6070 kHz) was also good to the point of
still being audible after cochannel VOK signed on at 0900 UT. Oct 8.

songs; usual selection of indigenous music at sign off. Usual CRI QRM.

5985.78v, Myanma Radio, 1321 + 1349, Oct. 7. Assumed they switched over to
the transmitter located at Yagon, as opposed to the usual transmitter at
this time from Nay Pyi Taw, which has a steady frequency of 5985.00 kHz.
Playing pop music. Yesterday was still on 5985.00 kHz. Perhaps doing
maintenance on the Nay Pyi Taw transmitter?

NEW ZEALAND RNZI Mailbox, caught part of it Monday Oct 5 at 1335 UT on
6170 kHz, and the rest of it from audio on demand. Adrian Sainsbury
explained like he did last year about why RNZI has a transition schedule
effective for only one week: Seasonal changes require changes to antenna
system. Oct 25 falls in middle of a "labor holiday weekend" in NZ, so need
to make changes earlier, as it's not practical to get staff to Rangitaiki
during the holiday weekend.

So to be off the air Oct 16 from 1130 am NZT for about 6 hours [2230 UT
Oct 15 to 0430 UT Oct 16], and not implement the full B-09 schedule until
Oct 25, which cannot be done before then since some frequencies are
occupied by other stations until 25 Oct. The new sked from 25 Oct will be
posted on website sometime this week, he says.

SAINT HELENA Radio St. Helena Day 2009 will be on Saturday 14th of
November 2009.

The 'Party On-The-Air' will have the following schedule:
Time in UTC Target Area(s)
2000-2100 India / Southeast Asia
2100-2200 Japan / Asia
2200-2330 Europe
2330-0100 North America/Central America/Caribbean

The transmission will be on 11092.5 KHz in Upper Side Band, as usual.

Radio St. Helena is very pleased to announce that the newly designed RSD
2009 QSL cards will be sponsored by the highly respected Japan Short Wave
Club. This good news has been reported by Mr. T. Ohtake of the JSWC. It
can truly be said, that without the very generous help of the JSWC, there
would not have been a Radio St. Helena Day Revival in 2006.

To get a QSL from Radio St. Helena, you must send a written and verifiable
reception report by AIRMAIL and include sufficient return postage. Email-
reports will be not be verified. Recordings will not be returned.

In EURO-countries, please send a 5-Euro banknote. Otherwise, please send 3
or more US dollar banknotes to cover the required return postage.

Radio St. Helena
P.O.Box 93
Jamestown, St. Helena
STHL 1ZZ
South Atlantic Ocean
via AIRMAIL
via United Kingdom & Ascension

The last two lines of the above address are very important and should be
written as shown. Be sure to use sufficient postage on your letter to RSH.
Ask at your local post office for the correct AIRMAIL postage for your
letter to go all the way to St. Helena.

Emails and telephone calls from DXers everywhere are very welcome during
the broadcasts. A special email address for RSD 2009 will, probably, be
announced in October.

Gary Walters and his Team at RSH wish everyone excellent listening
conditions, hope that you enjoy the programming, and hope that the
sunspots will be kinder to us this year.

SAO TOME 4960 VOA on Oct 4 w/ best signal hrd this season thus far w/

SOLOMON ISLANDS 5018.513 Solomon Islands back on!
Will follow-up with a log shortly but SIBC are back on, hearing them 0900+
UT Oct 7 on 5018.513 kHz. Slightly distorted audio but not too bad and
very strong signal, pegging both my FT-950 and NRD-535D with an over
S9+60dB signal. Should be propagating to North America right now.
(David Sharp-NSW-AUS, dxld Oct 7)

5018.57 Solomon Islands, SIBC caught at 1010 to 1029 UT per tips from
Charles Bolland and David Sharp. Good to have them back on this frequency
as they formally came in well. 7 Oct.
(Robert Wilkner-FL-USA, DXplorer Oct 7)]

5018.513 SIBC, 0910, English, local messages, including tsunami relief
news for people in Tonga and elsewhere. Local time check by man, into
"Voice of Salvation" at 0915 UT. Certainly not here day prior so must have
reactivated today. Very strong, pegging S-Meters on both radios at
S9+60dB. Oct 7.
(David Sharp-NSW-AUS, dxld Oct 8)

5018.4, SIBC, (pres), 0927-1000, Noted a male in Pidgin language comments.
Between comments music presented. Signal was just weak enough where it was
very difficult to make out the details. More comments and music ensue
during the period. Signal was poor.
(Chuck Bolland-FL-USA, hcdx Oct 7)

5019.958 SIBC, 0947, nearly on nominal with strong signal. Now, if they
could just "fix" the garbled audio! Had tried for this earlier without
luck at 0700 UT and again at 0800 UT, so I'm not sure when it came on, or
if intermittent. Obviously they have someone "tweaking" the xmtr. Nice to
have them back. Oct 8.

SOUTH AFRICA [to Zimbabwe] 3955 Zimbabwe Community Radio on 3955 kHz
via Meyerton (from 1800 UT?) heard 4 Oct and 5 Oct both around 1812 UT
tune-in. English ID mentioned website <www.zicora.com> (I'm guessing the
spelling as they don't spell it phonetically on air and unable to check it
from here). At 1855 UT transmitter stayed on with music before Family
Radio programme in Portuguese at 1900 UT.

SURINAM 4990 R. Apintie (tent.) hrd Oct 4 for first time in many months
w/ typical non-stop pop mx (or so it appeared) from 0623 UT tune, in and
out of audibility _ this is typically when Apintie is hrd here when on the
air. Threshold signal w/ no QRM from the Brazilian on 4885 kHz. Signal
spike on the Perseus was better looking than the audio sounded (well above
the noise lvl) and was centered on 4990 kHz. SINPO 15331.

4990 R. Apintie, Surinam.
Minuten schwappten gelegentlich leise Musikfetzen herueber.
Kopfhoehrer.
(Thomas Lindenthal-D, A-DX Oct 6)

Livestream (mp3, 24 kb/s):

<http://s1.viastreaming.net:7000>
(daneben auch Streams in anderen Formaten)
Homepage: <http://www.apintie.sr>

(Christoph Ratzer-AUT OE2CRM <www.a-dx.at> Oct 6)

4990.000 Radio Apintie, TENTATIVE, 0805, threshold signal, talk by a man
with occasional a capella singing. Could not verify the language as Dutch
but it was very guttural, which tends to rule out Spanish and it's too
early for the Chinese station, which normally dominates later. Very "warm
and fuzzy" (or "Happy Station") sounding type program. Also, I think 0800+
roughly coincides with Paramaribo sunrise. Gone at 0900 recheck. If indeed
Apintie, it would be my second log here. Oct 6.

SWEDEN From the Radio Sweden website:
"With the start of the new transmission period for short and medium wave,
as well as satellite, on October 25, Radio Sweden will only be publishing
our broadcast schedule on the Web. This is a logical consequence of the
increasing importance of the Internet as a broadcast platform and because
we have stopped broadcasting our own programs in Swedish. At the same time
we are simplifying our marketing and audience services.

Listeners to our programs will find the schedules for all our languages
under the heading "Frequencies/Tider och frekvenser" on the SR
International homepage. When necessary and by request we will also
continue to mail printed versions of our schedules in Swedish and other
languages. Listeners can also contact Swedish Radio's Listener Service
department with requests.

At the same time we are discontinuing mailing QSL cards to listeners in
response to reception reports.

Ingemar Loefgren Head of SR International"
<http://www.sr.se/rs/english/index.htm>

Pity but very common these days; they sent me a schedule for years and
issued some nice QSLs but I guess its just as easy to find the information
online and receive an emailed confirmation of reception - Mike.
(R Sweden website, via BrDXC-UK ng Mike Terry-UK, Oct 5)

Radio Sweden special produced SWEDISH PROGRAM DISCONTINUED. Programs in
Swedish short-and medium wave.

This means that our weekend programs the week that went (with a summary of
the week's main Swedish news), Sweden Granary, Maritime magazine and
Sweden in the world disappears, and the daily half-hour packages of
actuality and news on weekdays. Broadcasts on shortwave, medium wave and
satellite will continue until further notice, especially with repeat
consignments from Eko program (Lunch echo in the afternoons, Daily Echo

SWITZERLAND The HBG Prangins standard frequency and time signal station
on 75 kHz will cease operations by the end of 2011. It has been on the air
since 1966. Users have been advised to tune to the German Mainflingen
DCF77 station on 77.5 kHz.

Bundesamt fuer Metrologie (METAS).

Zeitzeichensignals rechtzeitig geeignete Massnahmen treffen koennen.

558 kHz test.
Auf der Mailing-Liste des Medium Wave Circle <www.mwcirlce.org> kam gerade
folgendes ueber den Ticker:

I have noticed by a pure coincidence that today Sept 28 a testing signal
was hearable on 558 kHz, as a continuous beep. I heard it in Switzerland
at 10:00 UTC (ground wave, medium power) as well as Swiss evening time at
19:00 UTC. I heard it at home as well as in my car while driving in the
Zurich area.

The signal direction seems to come from Monte-Ceneri (formerly
transmitting on 558 kHz), South of Switzerland, close to the Italian
border.

Is this Monte-Ceneri doing a coverage test for somebody else? The Swiss-
Italian broadcast was phased out in summer 2008.

USA WBOH to close shortwave station.
I just spoke to Tabitha Hunter of WBOH shortwave station in Newport, North
Carolina. She confirms that WBOH, currently broadcasting on 5920 kHz, will
close their shortwave service at the end of the A09 schedule period. No
reasons were indicated, only that they will leave the air. Their sister
station WTJC, will continue on 9370 kHz on a 24 hour schedule for the B09
session.

I found it a fascinating story.

A Life Dedicated to Shortwave Radio by M. LeClair, Aug 20, 2009

The role of shortwave radio has been much debated by members of the U.S.
international broadcasting community. Among those with a strong interest
in the topic is George Woodard. I spoke with him about his life and
experiences working with shortwave radio as both a manufacturer and an
engineer for U.S.-sponsored broadcasts.

Woodard started out with Continental Electronics in the early 1960s in the
midst of the Cold War, when shortwave radio was on the rise as a means to
provide an alternate news source for people in the closed Soviet Union.
He'd been drawn to radio as a boy, attended Texas Tech and received a
degree in electrical engineering in 1962.

During his years with Continental, he helped develop many of the high-
power shortwave transmitters that were an important part of radio and
politics in that uneasy era of simmering conflict.

Years later, in 1985, Woodard left the manufacturer to become associate
director for engineering for Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty and was
promoted to VP of RFE/RL Engineering in 1987, just before the conclusion
of the Cold War.

After jamming of shortwave broadcasting by the Soviet government ceased in
1988, Radio Free Liberty reached a peak of nearly 35 million weekly
listeners, bringing news about the West and democracy to the countries of
the former Eastern Bloc.

[...] Why is shortwave still important and what should we be doing today
to preserve it?
That is a very good question that our leaders in Washington should instead
be asking.

The immediate preliminary answer is that it's not as important as it once
was, though still very important. Our leaders in Washington have been
unable to get beyond the first half of the above answer since 1989 and the
collapse of Soviet-style communism. It is still very important.

Washington, driven by incompetent technocrats and bureaucrats at the IBB
and the U.S. Department of State, who are experts at saying what they
perceive people want to hear rather than the truth, has taken a wrong turn
on shortwave broadcasting since about 1989. The result has been a kind of
self-fulfilling prophecy. As we close down most shortwave broadcasting to
parts of the world, it is no surprise that 20 years later we find fewer
people are listening!

My advice is to pursue vigorously all new technological means to
communicate accurate world news to the parts of the world that do not have
that blessing of their own. Expand Internet, TV, local AM and FM, Wi-Fi
and cell phone broadcasting, but do not significantly reduce shortwave. In
many instances, as has been recently seen in Iran, Belarus, Georgia,
Pakistan and other places, and chronically seen in parts of Russia, China
and North Korea, increased shortwave capability is critical.

The cost of shortwave broadcasting is often brought up as a concern. Let
me close with some perspective on that argument.

The cost of operating a nominally large shortwave station is approximately
$15 million per year. Ten stations cost about $150 million to operate
annually. With modernization and a degree of automation, it could be
reduced to approximately half that. If shortwave broadcasting could
contribute to reducing our global military effort by just 1 percent, we,
as a country, would still save approximately $4.85 billion annually,
assuming a $500 billion annual military budget, not to mention the lives
of American soldiers.

I think it would perhaps be wiser for the American government to spend the
little money on shortwave to help keep us out of shooting wars.

URUGUAY 6125.000 SODRE, 0921, thanks Bryan Clark tip. Very weak, with
Spanish talk by man, one mention of "Montevideo" but I don't know if it
was in tandem with an ID. Into nice ballads. Readable on brief peaks but
mainly in the mush. Had a carrier here day prior but no audio. One to
watch as the freq is clear here. Haven't logged anything from Uruguay in
probably over 25-years (at which point they were also QSL'ed).

The Asian Broadcasting Institute celebrates the 30th anniversary this
year. We will have the special shortwave broadcasting in commemoration of
this.

12085 kHz, 1300-1330 UT Oct 9th, Tashkent tx relay.

Date: October 8, 2009 (re-broadcast on October 9) Time: 1300-1330 UT
Frequency: 12085 kHz Language: Japanese.

Tiny S=3-4 signal here in southern Germany. Just above local noise of
electric fence charger, and threshold signal from Tashkent site. Tashkent
at 65 degrees azimuth, which is right approx. 90 degrees at dead angle
towards Europe, [312deg].

Though fair propagation today at same time slot, like Firedrake music
jammer 12040 kHz at S=9+20dB level, or EWTN WEWN 12160 kHz at S=9+15dB.

Noted also "vailed" radio station "Radio Free Chosun" in Korean via same
TX unit before 1300 UT.

No co-channel QRM of RNW Tinang-PHL noted here so far. E-mail address
given at 1310 UT in Japanese by male announcer.

13.12:15 UT short MORSE code signal and Chinese ID.
13.14:30 UT short piece of ?KRE's? "Internationale" hymn recording given.
13.29:20 UT Interval signal.
13.30:45 UT TX Tashkent OFF.

12085 ABI special xmsn. Heard this ABI special today, Oct 8, at 1300 UT.
Carrier already there at 1259 UT, opened 1300 UT with one playing of the
same IS that can be found at the 2rd URL shown below (IS link takes a
while to load). Weak signal overall, somewhat better on a few grudging
"peaks," but would not have been identifiable except for the IS match.
Virtually all talking by man in Asian language, occasional mx bridges and
single repeats of the IS, a few words by a woman here and there. Off at
1330 UT. I guess it was RN via the Philippines that was also on channel,
but they were even weaker, and not a problem. Tnx Dan F. and Wolfie for
the info on this one.

Re: 12085-ABI. Slightly better today, Oct 9, during the first 10 mins.,
then about the same.
(Jerry Berg-MA-USA, DXplorer Oct 9)

In Tokyo the reception was good to fair on both days. No QRM. RNW Tinang
seemed to be skipped [today].

The programs were:
"Details of the foundation of Asian Broadcasting Institute in 1978".

"Looking back the days of Radio War in Taiwan Strait" with many recording
of the cladestine sations on both sides.

"30 Years of Radio War in Korean Peninsula" with recordings of the plot
stations from South and North.

Station identifications were given in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and
English at the beginning and ending.

Reception report should be addressed to <sw @ abiweb.jp> within October.

New Christmas 2009 gift ?

<http://www.rfspace.com/SDR-IP.html>

koennte. Stay tuned, wie man so sagt.
