DRM noise 17870-17880, Sept 25 at 2037 and still at 2121, surely TDF site
which has used this range many times before but not currently on the DRM
DX schedule at
<http://www.drm-dx.de/>

Montsinery had registered +17875+ previously at 1300-2000 only, 320
degrees USward. It was last reported in the DRM DX fora last May for a
week when it was on for some event in Brasil at 17-21 UT. So what bits of
programming are they running now, and why?

While LRA36 was at S9 level Sept 24 after 1800 UT, not even a carrier
detectable the next day, Sept 25 at 1802, 1830 and 2030 UT chex. Not much
from LRA 15345 kHz either. Nevertheless, solar flux for Sept 24 was still
75, and K index at 1800 Sept 25 was still 0.

So

in seinem Museum.

CANADA Interesting to compare signals from Toronto and Sackville only 25
kHz apart, and CFRX wins! Sept 20 at 0605, CFRX 6070 had louder modulation
and at least equal signal to KBSWR in Spanish on 6045. CFRX runs 1 kW non-
direxional(?), and RCI has 250 kW at 60 degrees to Europe, but normally VG
here. Of course, Toronto is considably closer. CFRX had been missing about
24 hours earlier. It was also still on around 1230 UT check.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 20)

I check the 6 MHz band most days between 0600 / 0700 UT, and the 250 kW of
KBSWR via Sackville 6045 kHz is usually well heard and at good strength.
But there is no trace at all of CFRX 6070 or of CKZN on 6160+ kHz at this
time. The latter was tentatively heard just one morning when it so
happened that their frequency had changed and a het could be heard. When I
check for the whereabouts of Gander Oceanic they are usually to be found
on 5 MHz frequencies or even lower at this hour. Maybe this is due to my
northerly location and Glenns' in the south?

1323 - 8 Sept at 1200-1300 UT I heard CRI Mongolian on 1323 kHz ( \\
5915), followed by Russian at 1300-1400 and Russian again at 1400-1500.
There was no break in transmission between the Mongolian and Russian
segments for any antenna or site change, just the usual CRI interval music
and opening routine. It was a very strong signal here in Jiayuguan, Gansu
Province, China, overall rather stronger than CRI Russian 1521 kHz via
Urumqi. There was no trace here of CRI Russian on 963 kHz. There was a
transmitter break before 1500, after which CRI English appeared with an
even stronger signal on 1323 kHz. My feeling is it was more like an
antenna change from a single site rather than a change of site, but who
knows?
(Alan Davies in China, ARC MV-Eko, Sept 21)

Jiayuguan is located in the far northwest of Central China.

CUBA Excellent season for Radio Habana Cuba transmission reception here

RHC finally heard with half an English broadcast during the previously
scheduled 2030-2130 UT hour! JBA carrier on 17660, else? But Sept 25 at
2053 found sufficient open carrier on 11760, 2059 opening English, 2132
opening French. Arabic was also back, on 11770 at 2053. Spanish on 11800
distorted, 13760 buried under Portugal 13755 with loud silly ballgame and
after 2100 RHC Spanish also on 11770.

Let's look at RHC's website schedule:
<http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/c_frecuencia/frecuencias.htm>

By golly, it has been modified since our last perusal, but it has taken
then about two sesquimonths since major changes were really made and it's
still wrong. It does not show any Arabic at all, nor any French at 2030!

However, the Spanish schedule does now account for the greatly extended
hours we have been monitoring it since Junend, filling the gaps 15-21 and
07-11 UT.

As a service to DX listeners, certainly not to the incompetent RHC itself,
I herewith extract the Spanish schedule and rearrange it into nonconfusing
strict time order. This part looks fairly accurate compared to monitoring
but we cannot vouch for it 100%:

News from Radio HCJB & VozAndes Media Quito:
Erection HCJB 6050 kHz future project for regional service with 10 kW is
on its way. Voluntary service on Mount Pichincha. See

<http://www.hcjb.de/index.php?id=206>

New 6050 kHz 10 kW installation at Mount Pichincha instead of Pifo site in
future. Lazy-H antenna, azimuth main lobe at approx. 35 / 225 degrees.

6050 kHz service aimed at Indian language Quichua, Kofan ... audience,
which uses FIXED FREQUENCY receivers in rural area.

Radio HCJB & VozAndes Media in Ekuador:

Summary of the enclosed report:
When deciding to close Pifo already in September HCJB also terminated the
earlier plans to continue the 6050 kHz frequency with 50 kW from the Mount
Pichincha site [acc. earlier reports by moving in one of the 100 kW
transmitters from Pifo]. As a result the broadcasts in indigenous
languages (Quechua, Kofan etc.) would have get only limited airtime on
mediumwave and FM in Quito area anymore or probably even ceased
altogether, in any chase not reached the rural areas of Ecuador anymore
where a lot of fixed-frequency radios had been distributed.

This situation prompted the editorial office of these language services
and the German service to develop a concept that calls for operating a 10
kW transmitter in their own responsibility. This plan has been approved by
the HCJB headquarter in the USA. The facility is being set up by
volunteers, they hope to have it on air already in November. The
transmitter will altogether be used for a bit more than 16 hours a day.

Below a link to an illustrated HCJB German report about last Saturdays
subbotnik on the transmitter site. Right now I see no updates for their
frequencies at
<http://www.hcjb.de/index.php?id=16>
yet, with just four days left before zero hour.

EGYPT ERTU Boosts AM radio signals with New Thomson DRM transmitters
from Grass Valley.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (IBC _ Stand 1.D11), Sept 10, 2009.
The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) has placed an order with
Grass Valley for two Thomson TMW 2050D 50 kW medium-wave digital
transmitters and complementary antenna systems to upgrade its existing AM
radio broadcast network and ensure reliable regional coverage.

The new Thomson DRM transmitters and antenna systems, which are now being
installed in Cairo, Egypt, will be on the air in October 2009, with Grass
Valley engineers providing complete design, installation, commissioning
and training services. The installation required a special antenna design
due to limited space available. ERTU has used Thomson transmission
technology since 1969.

WTFK? Are ERTU REALLY going to run these in DRM, in a land where there are
close to ZERO DRM receivers? Or are the transmitters merely DRM-capable
and can really be run indefinitely in ancient analog still an improvment
over the old ones, if the status of ERTU's SW transmitters be any guide?
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 19)

I'm 100% positive that it ain't DRM transmissions, my guess is that these
transmitters will be located either in upper Egypt as the listeners there
used to complain about not receiving the ERTU networks in the clear, or in
Sinai closer to the borders of Israel as the problem exists there.

But as you said Glenn, mainly the media is leaning on FM in Cairo and the
main cities here, but apart from these areas the FM coverage is very poor
so MW is the only option.

DRM is out of the picture completely as no one in Egypt would pay such
huge amount of money - compared to the salaries - to tune in to local
radio stations, provided that ERTU is really thinking of using DRM which I
really doubt.

GERMANY [and non] A MEDIUM WAVE PILGRIMAGE TO CENTRAL EUROPE.

Our summer tour this August was to Berlin and Copenhagen, with some more
cities and castles in between, and a trip to Southern Sweden (Malmoe,
Lund, a Viking village and a couple of coastal resorts) just to say we
have been up there!

As far as radio is concerned, my idea was to check what is still audible
on medium waves, after so many station closures and power lowerings. I
wasn't interested in real bandscans, but I just jotted down which stations
were automatically tuned in by the Sony/Ford 6000 CD. After all, this is
the way "ordinary" people use their car radios, just pressing the "up" and
"down" buttons and listening to the stations which come out.

The findings were grim. In Munich it was just on3radio on 801 and the two
Deutschlandfunk frequencies 153 and 207; going north east to Dresden at
times also Luxembourg on 234 and on 270 the Czech Radio, which in Dresden
itself came out also on 639, along with MDR Info on 1044, the Voice of
Russia on 1431 and still DLF on 153. From Dresden to Berlin it was a
unique experience: only long wave stations! DLF 153, Czech Radio 270 and
Poland 225, which from there onwards became a trustworthy travelling
companion. Around the Grafenwoehr Training Area AFN popped up on 1107
(Vilseck), and also at times there was the Voice of Russia on 1323.

Once so rich of MW signals, Berlin had just the Voice of Russia on 693, a
DRM signal from DLF on 855 and Deutschlandradio on two frequencies, 177
and 990 _ but, a bad sign of the times, neither was mentioned on top of
the former RIAS building in Hans-Rosenthal-Platz, but only 89.6 and 97.7
(which is DLF). The RIAS emblem is still there. Small FM note: both BBC
World Service on 90.2 and NPR Worldwide on 104.1 have very good coverage
areas, about 100 km around Berlin the former, and 60 km the latter.
Another sign of the times: I heard the Voice of Russia on 693 on a
Saturday morning to 0900 UTC with "A Christian message from Moscow" - not
so common prior to 1989 on Radio Moscow!

In the Copenhagen area and in Southern Sweden, one could count on 177 and
225 (in some places only Poland!), while 1062 from Denmark and 1179 from
Sweden were very good, but not always on the air. Moving west to Nyborg,
three signals added to these, NDR Info on 702, the DRM test from
Kalundborg on 243 and yes, the BBC on 198. And we went back to Germany,
with 702 from Flensburg and DLF 1269 from Neumuenster, and still DLR 177:
in Italy this frequency is rather difficult, and I was surprised at such
good coverage. The 6000 CD scanner stopped on DLR even though this radio,
as you may know, doesn't tune 1 kHz steps on LW/MW, so 177 must actually
be heard on 180 kHz. And at the hotel in Luebeck it was the only LW signal
to push its way through the usual electrical noise.

By the way, in Luebeck a hi-fi shop had for sale a magnificent Grundig
Satellit 1400 Professional, identical to mine!

Around Kassel, after enjoying the British Forces Broadcasting Service for
300 km from Hamburg (BFBS 1 on 97.6 from Visselhoevede then 93 from
Braunschweig, with a BFBS 2 on 95.2 from Fallingbostel), it was time ...
to change Army, and the American Forces Network came out on 873, there
were also DLF on three frequencies (207, 549 and the ubiquitous 153),
Voice of Russia on 1323, France Inter on 162 and hr-info on 594 (which, if
DX reports are right, I won't find next time I get there).

Wikipedia states that the Berliner Funkturm or Funkturm Berlin (Radio
Tower Berlin) is a transmitting tower in Berlin, built between 1924 and
1926 by Heinrich Straumer. It is nicknamed "der lange Lulatsch" ("the
lanky lad") and is one of the best-known points of interest in the city of
Berlin. It stands in the Berlin trade fair ground in the Charlottenburg-
Wilmersdorf borough. On September 3, 1926, the radio tower was inaugurated
on the occasion of the third Grosse Deutsche Funkausstellung (Great German
Radio Exhibition). The tower is now a protected monument, with restaurant
and observation platform.

The tower is built as one large steel framework construction, similar to
the Eiffel Tower. The 150 m high and approximately 600 metric ton radio
tower was originally planned strictly as a transmitting tower, but later
additions included a restaurant at a height of approximately 52 m, and
observation deck at a height of approximately 125 m.

The radio tower is probably the only observation tower in the world
standing on porcelain insulators. It was designed as the support tower for
a T-antenna for medium wave, and the insulators were intended to prevent
the drain of the transmitting power down through the tower itself.
However, this was impractical, because visitors would have been vulnerable
to massive electric shocks, so the tower was later grounded via its
elevator shaft. On 22 March 1935 the first regular television programme in
the world was broadcast from an aerial on the top of the tower. Since
1973, the radio tower has been used as relay station for amateur radio,
police radio, and mobile phone services. The last complete renovation took
place 1987 in honour of the 750th anniversary of the founding of Berlin

DRM via DTK/M&B Nauen ? 2009-09-18 12:53 I have a bit of news that I
thought might be worth sharing. On Friday August 28 before 1300z, I heard
a strong UNID DRM signal on 6040. So I activated DREAM and tried to decode
what's up. Contrary to any station received so far, there was no "MSC"
(Main Service Channel)

for audio but 2 separate data channels (see [screenshots were attached]
<DRM_WAZ_Nachrichten_6040kHz_2009-08- 28_1250z.png>
one Journaline newscast with misc. German language news, and a second
channel offering an "MOT Broadcast Web Site". I kept "listening"
(decoding) for a few minutes and the result finally was an htm file
consisting of a .gif picture and a text. It looked line this (see
<DRM_WAZ_Nachrichten_6040kHz_2009-08-28_1251z.png>

The text says: 90elf 90eleven, obiously a hint towards the eleven players
in any soccer team. Yes, it's about soccer. The translation:
90eleven - Your Football (soccer) Radio Shortly to follow summaries from
the premier league conference (*) and further reports on the games of the
premier league.

I haven't heard this after August 28 again so far. To explain the text
content, you should understand every Saturday afternoon when most
Bundesliga (literally: federal league) teams play, there are regular so-
called "conferences" on German Public Radio (ARD), which is nothing but
live reports from the different games all over the country and the
reporters are always on the air whenever/wherever something relevant (in
sports terms :-) happens.

So my guess is they plan a wireless add-on service via DRM Shortwave
(possibly) or maybe also MW/LW, who knows. I guess this was a test on a
Friday (regular working day) to see how the system performs. My personal
conclusion is that despite the relatively high data rates on the SDC
(Secondary Data Channel), reception was pretty reliable and much less
drop-outs occurred than on the usual more densely packed MSC. So let's
wait and see whether DRM will further spoil the midst of the 49m band for
"silly ball games" info.

Another DRM story: I had not logged/heard any signal from RTL on 6095 kHz
in a while. But on the day before, Thursday August 27 around 1446z, RTL
was back on 6095 with their pseudo stereo music program and an additional
low data rate Journaline service, see
<DRM_RTLradio_6095kHz_1446z_2009-08-27.png>

Their Journaline text claims "the future begins - now and today: on MW
1440 kHz and SW 6095 kHz we broadcast our program also digitally in DRM
(Digital Radio Mondiale). Every day from 1-5 and 9-18 hours [local time].
We're testing the future for you as early as now. More on DRM at
<www.drm.org> ." Well, I thought they have left the consortium and also
discontinued their transmissions but seem to relaunch them occasionally in
the local afternoons. MW is still regular all day but too weak here in SE
Germany for proper decoding during the day in the non-winter seasons.

P.S.: The time in the screenshots refers to local European DST UTC+2

Weak-to-Fair signal was later covered by a Greek pirate station. I was

HISTORY: I think the other R Nikkei 3925 transmitter is located at Nemuro,
Hokkaido, not at Sapporo, while the other 3925 tx site is at Nagara
(Chiba). Schedules tell that whenever Nemuro is on the air, there's also
Nagara tx on the same channel.

As the programs are same, one can't recognize one tx from the other.
Except when Nemuro is off, one can say he heard Nagara. I believe there is
no local ID's for the two tx sites.
(Jari Savolainen-FIN, dxld Dec 18, 2008)

Jari's conclusion is true. Hokkaido Relay Station of Radio Nikkei (former
NSB) was constructed in August 1961 at Sapporo [43 06 37 N 141 21 44 E]
with the call sign JOZ4 to avoid the skip phenomenon on 3925 kHz in
Hokkaido Area. The transmitter site was moved to Memuro
[43 19 25 N 145 34 30 E]
in October 1995. JOZ4 is now over NEC HFB-7840 transmitter with 10 kW,
transmitting simultaneously with JOZ (50 kW) at Nagara site on 3925 kHz.

In addition to the original set-up for 890 (20 kW) and 1115 kHz (1 kW)
there are 3*250 watts old MW transmitters on the site ex 1466/1466/1484
kHz plus at least 4 vintage Military transmitters but we are unsure if
they can be brought back to life.

Current antenna set-up: Longwire/Windom. We plan to put up smaller and
slimmer new masts, for "T" with top loading.

Plus 4 old Shortwave transmitters. We plan a Museum/Nostalgia station
along the lines of Village Radio, Tauranga, NZ, 1368 kHz.

Currently doing ham transmissions on LA1ASK Sunday mornings at approx.

to understand, some decision about some place that is "not in South",

RTI Hoererklub Ottenau:
Information zum Radio Taiwan International - Radio Traumland -
Oktoberkontest,
Gedenken an Albert Roesch und Bernhard Westhoelder,
sowie Anfrage Winterfrequenzen.

Der Radio Taiwan International Hoererklub Ottenau fuehrt im Oktober 2009
wieder eine Diplomaktion durch. An den Tagen 2., 3., 9. und 10. Oktober

So

Hoererklubsekretaer Christoph Preutenborbeck zugesandt.
Preutenborbeck, Strasserhof 20, 51519 Odenthal, Germany.

bekanntzugeben.

Ich danke freundlichst fuer Ihr Verstaendniss und Ihre Unterstuetzung,
RTI Hoererklub Ottenau, Bernd Seiser.

Frequenzkoordinierungskonferenz fuer den Winter 2009/10 in der
Dominikanischen Republik.

Arab States' Broadcasting Union Probleme bereitet.

17505 under threshold at 1305 UT, only tiny carrier noted.

17505 at 1500 UT S=2-3, deep fades, typically characteristic on Rampisham

12050 squeezed between VoRUS Samara 12055 to NE/ME and NHK Singapore
Kranji 12045 in Japanese, latter both stronger than RTE. Only S=2 tiny,
seemingly from Meyerton-AFS site or ASC ??, but not from U.K. !

7265 is from Meyerton AFS, but no propagation into Europe in our summer,

Daventry Calling - Station G5SW Chelmsford.

In the progressive development of events that brought about the
establishment of the famous BBC shortwave station located at Daventry in
the Midlands of England, we take up the story of the early shortwave
station that was licensed as G5SW. This transmitter was inaugurated at the
Marconi factory in Chelmsford, it was subsequently moved to Daventry, and
it remained in service for a magnificent total of 32 years. This is the
story.

Back in the year 1898, the young Marconi, just 24 years old, established a
wireless factory on Hall Street in Chelmsford England, some 35 miles north
east of London. This venture was so successful that he constructed his own
factory building on New Street in the same town 14 years later and
transferred the manufacturing of wireless equipment into it in June 1912.

In 1919, Marconi constructed a 6.5 kW experimental broadcast transmitter
the power of which was increased to 15 kW during the following year. With
the usage of this transmitter, Marconi began the broadcast of a regular
news service that was radiated on 107 kHz, which of course is a channel in
what we now know as the standard Longwave Broadcast Band.

Soon afterwards, a very famous radio broadcast was made from this
transmitter when the Australian opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba, made a
scheduled broadcast that was advertised in advance in the newspapers. This
broadcast, on June 14, 1920, was heard widely throughout islandic Europe
as well as over in continental Europe and beyond, and it is looked upon as
being a significant milestone in the development of radio broadcasting,
not only in England, but around the world.

Shortly afterwards, Marconi launched a regular broadcasting service for
the benefit of Londoners over the famous original station, 2LO in London.
This station was subsequently taken over by the BBC.

Now, around this era, the usage of shortwave transmissions for
international communication as well as for program broadcasting was
already proving to be a successful procedure. Marconi himself had
performed several successful long range tests, and experimental shortwave
broadcasting was already on the air from shortwave stations in the United
States and Australia, as well as in England itself.

With these facts in mind, Marconi constructed a 10 kW shortwave
transmitter in the year 1927, and the first broadcast transmission from
this new unit took place on Armistice Day 1927. This inaugural broadcast
on November 11 commemorated the end of what we now call World War 1, and
the programming was shaped to honor this occasion.

This new shortwave transmitter was hurriedly assembled from already
available equipment and the two aerial masts, 475 ft high, supported an
aerial that was omni-directional and vertically polarized. The original
channel was around 12.5 MHz, though this was changed in the following year
to 11750 kHz in accordance with the new international regulations enacted
at the recent Washington Radio Convention.

Thus began a regular international radio broadcasting service that was
heard around the world, and reported quite frequently in radio magazines
published in England, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Programming for this shortwave broadcasting service was usually a relay
from the local station 2LO and these transmissions were on the air in this
way for a little over three years.

These international broadcasts were so successful that the BBC made
arrangements with Marconi to rent the shortwave transmitter at Chelmsford
as a preliminary program service while their own large station at Daventry
was under construction. The BBC took over the programming for shortwave
G5SW in 1931, and on January 5 in the next year, that is, 1932, the BBC
introduced their new extended Empire Service.

Later in the same year, the BBC began test broadcasts from their two new
10 kW STC transmitters at Daventry. Interestingly, these Daventry test
broadcasts were on the air under the Chelmsford callsign G5SW, and we
should remember that at this stage the Marconi transmitter G5SW was still
located at Chelmsford, not at Daventry 100 miles distant.

Anyway, this five year old shortwave transmitter that was rented by the
BBC was closed down on December 17, 1932 in favor of the two new
transmitters located at Daventry.

However, two years later, in 1934, this now largely idle transmitter was
re-activated for a very special occasion. His Majesty, King George 5, was
making a Christmas Broadcast to the Empire, a historic first, and the BBC
made special arrangements to ensure that the broadcast was heard well at
all points around the globe. The two new transmitters at Daventry carried
this royal broadcast, and the Marconi transmitter at Chelmsford was re-
activated for this occasion. However this time, it was on the air, not
under its own callsign G5SW, but rather under a new BBC callsign, GSD. The
same previous channel was in use, the old and well established 11750 kHz.

This special broadcast for Christmas 1934 by King George 5 was considered
to be such an important radio occasion, that it was relayed to the world
also from the relatively new communication station located at Rugby,
rather nearby to Daventry.

Early in the New Year 1935, transmitter G5SW was re-furbished, upgraded to
20 kW, modified to operate on several different shortwave bands,
transferred to Daventry, and installed in an available open space in what
was known as the 5GB Mediumwave Building. At this new BBC location, the
historic Marconi transmitter was designated as Sender 3 and it was brought
into regular broadcast service on May 19, 1935. Callsigns in use over this
transmitter now depended on what frequency was in use, a new callsign for
each channel in use.

Two years after its removal from Chelmsford and its installation at
Daventry, this same transmitter was upgraded again, this time with a power
output of 60 kW. During the intense events in the year 1940, Sender 3 was
used for carrying the Forces Program on 6150 kHz.

However, as time went by, this historic transmitter became increasingly
undependable, and ultimately, it was dropped from service, and it was
finally removed from the 5GB Building in 1959. We would presume that it
was simply, and unceremoniously, scrapped.

first days we'll stick our ears and antennas out to the airwaves for real
hardcore DXing, supported by lots of coffee or not so much of red vine or
free beer. On Friday we offer a warm or cold buffet and on Saturday a warm
snack.

Friday and Saturday evening will be some lessons from Manfred Rippich
about visiting broadcasting station all over the world Robert Kipp about
Radio St. Helena and the St. Helena-Day November 2009, Harald Gabler shows
pictures of the new QSL-Calendar 2010.

And the next sensation: The brain new DSP-High-End Receiver RDR54C1 we
have got from Fa. Reuter Elekronik for some tests.

All that is the normal procedure every year, one might say, but this year
is special. For the first time everyone may watch everything happening via
the magic internet!

Tuesday - Saturday 1800-2400 UTC on <www.rmrc.de> got to:
RMRC Webcam
if you will be asked for password: "rmrc"

Live stream is without audio at webpage. Live stream with audio go for:
Link (only, if there is no test-picture)

Some of our members or other enthusiastic DXers would like to take part,
but can't, because of various reasons like work, time, illness or simply
'cause of a to far distance.

For the first time you and any DXer can click in to the DX-Camp and watch,
what's going on. There will be a chat, to talk to DXers present on the
event. You may ask them all sorts of questions, like what the hear and
where it's coming from. You may even follow some lectures with your own
eyes and ears, even if you're hundreds of miles away from the meeting.
Chats are held in German and English and perhaps a mixture of everything
European including hands and feet, due to the use of video. And you will
get a QSL-Card from this event.

This is following the ideas of Thomas Moeller and Harald Gabler and
realisation Lutz Winkler and they hope to find lots of interested DXers to
either come to the meeting, or watch it via the internet.
