BURUNDI [non] Our longtime Norwegian member Rolf Lovstrom has been on a
Dxpedition to Lake Tanganyika in Burundi and has sent a report which is
published in Miscellaneous below. Burundi is a very poor and dusty
country. The temperature was 35 centigrades in the shadow. Crocodiles and
hippos were crossing the road just outside the capital Bujumbura!
(Anker Petersen-DEN, dswci DXW Sept 4)
Dxpedition to Burundi.
Early August I was checking SW-stations at a hotel on the beach of Lake
Tanganyika in Burundi on my Sony 7600 with 10 metres of external antenna.
The problem was erratic power supply, often went out at 1900 hours, so it
took a big strain on my Duracell batteries. Quality batteries could not be
found in Bujumbura markets or supermarkets.
Here are some interesting observations:
3980 R Hage, Galkayo: not audible.
4750 R Dunamis audible every evening from about 1600 UT. One night there
was co-channel interference from another station: Radio Peace, Sudan??
4828 Voice of Zimbabwe in the evening, weak.
4880 Anti-Zimbabwean station, very strong (SW Radio Africa MEY ??).
5010 R Nasionaly Malagasy, 1600 UT good.
5066 R Tele Candip, Bunia, very strong in the morning 0400-0900 UT. Also
quite strong in the evening.
6025 Nigeria Enugu. Definitely off the air!
6030 R ICDI, Sudan: not audible.
6110 R Fana, Addis Abeba, strong in the morning.
6210 R Kahuzi, from 0700-2000 UT from strong to fair, static, no QRM.
Africa is going on FM, fewer and fewer short wave stations exist. Three
powerful short wave signals: VOA Sao Tome and VOA Botswana plus anti-
Zimbabwean on 4880 kHz. Also South Africa to Central Africa on 6220 kHz
was powerful.
Medium waves not very many. Surprise was Nice in France on 1566 kHz!
[rather 1557 kHz]

Chad on 7120 kHz.
I'm currently hearing Radio Chad on 7120 kHz (7119.95 to be precise) with
news in French in progress at 1935 tune in. Fair signal here with some QRM
from what sounds like a data transmission, best in usb.
The 7120 transmitter went off abruptly at approx 2007 UTC. Chad has also
been reported back on 4905v kHz in the evenings recently, but day to day
frequency usage seems to be highly variable - worth checking 4905, 6165 or
7120 kHz.
(Dave Kenny-UK, BrDXC-UK ng Sept 11)
7120 RDNT Gredia, 1842-... (I'm actually listening to it right now), 11
Sept, Vernacular, infos reading often mentioning. N'Djamena, folk song and
an Afr. pop, French at 1900 UT with ID+fq annt. and then into a vy. short
news bulletin (2 mins.), prgr anns. interspersed with music till 1905 UT
when a feature on environment protection started; 45343 and deterioting
somewhat plus some CW amateur QRM after 1904 UT.
I haven't been able to track them on 4905 or 6165 kHz during these days.
At this time, the only audible BC stns 7100~7205 kHz are:
7110 ETH, 7120 TCD, 7200 SDN. However, the noise is moderate, so I believe
even GUI 7125 is "there.".

"Just to let you know that, from our side, we are ready to carry out the

2300-2400 UT 9865 kHz

<http://www.cvclavoz.cl/english/techinfo.html>
Note how the two 4/4 curtains, which must be the most expensive antennas
on the site, aim at Africa. Did Africa really become an important target
area for Voice of Pinochet, err, Chile, or was this kind of a misplanning?
(Kai Ludwig-D, dxld Sept 6)
Re. R. Nacional de Chile 1978 - 1981.
I see in G.E. imagery, maybe azimuths some variation by 3 degrees,
antennas #1 - #3 LPA's, not so effective antenna types at
357, 357, 57 degrees.
antennas #4, #6-8, TC611 is one of the best high gain dipol curtains in
the world, operates azimuthal slewing switches also.
42, 42, 72, 72 degrees.
Slewing to 42 degrees angle, for example the most important political
opponents audience target at USSR and Eastern Block could be reached.
Also slewing to 103 degr reached the big Cuban auxiliary forces to be
based at Angola and Mocambique in that era.
First time 8 x 100 kW HARRIS units appeared in WRTH 1979, p347,

Auszug aus der Bestaetigungs e-mail vom Februar:
Considering that you don't know our language your report is accurate. I am
the one who was introducing Voice of Asena - after the intro by the female
as you rightly described it. I was talking about the aims and objectives
of Voice of Asena so that our followers in Eritrea and the rest of the
region will know who we are and our main programme is going to be. VOA's
man objective is to promote freedom of expression among Eritrean as we
have a dictatorial regime who doesn't allow that basic right to our
people. So, taking advantage of the freedom we have in exile we are
challenging the regime so that to bring about democratic change. We are
trying to be the voice of the voiceless at home. The response we have got
yesterday after our first broadcast was unbelievable. As it has been the
case with our website, the radio broadcast has also been the talk of the
country among the people inside Eritrea and in the diaspora.
By the way 'Asena' in our local language is a sigh of happiness. If
someone is happy about something - says 'Asena!'

(Sei-ichi Hasegawa, NDXC Nagoya Japan, dxld Sept 6)
Did anyone hear RTE on shortwave with the All-Ireland final this
afternoon?? I was away from home but had a Sony 7600GR with me so checked
the listed shortwave frequencies a few times.
But could only hear what sounded like a weak NPR in English on 17505 kHz
at 1258 UT and later Radio France International in English at 1400 UT on
17505 kHz.
Nothing heard on 7265 or 12050 kHz. Admittedly they were targeting Africa
but what I heard on 17505 sounded like WRN English for Europe Sunday
schedule. So maybe a misfeed by WRN?
(Of course, a massive signal on 252 longwave here - final score Kilkenny
2-22 Tipperary 0-23, a record fourth successive win for Kilkenny
apparantly.)
Maybe hear something on shortwave for the next final in two weeks time.

think was facsimile (galloping horses sound), but for several years has
been sending what I think is a form of STANAG digital. It seems to be on

strength. But it is possible to receive broadcasters on 7555 kHz as long

what's J7D mode ? Multiplex 12 tone system ?
(wb, dxld Sept 7)
Thanks for the interesting info and pictures from FUG Le Regine 7556.4.
It's quite a big site.
I don't know what J7D mode is, but it doesn't sound (to me anyway) like a
Multiplex 12 tonal system.
To my ears it sounds like DRM but with a juddering/vibrating sound. There
are many similar sounding transmissions audible daily - 6230 kHz is a
regular here, 6895 kHz is another, and I hear one on 11540 kHz today. This
frequency appears to be used according to propagation on the day. All at
around 0900 UT. The exRoyal Navy Station at Inskip - eastwards about 5
miles distant from my location - is known to carry these type of
transmissions. One is booming in here currently on 3289 kHz. All
frequencies approximate.

12160, the out-of-band frequency pioneered by WWCR, now has a new
occupant: WEWN, since WWCR-3 abandoned it before 1600 to use 7490 instead.
WEWN English had been on 11530 until Sept 3, and we had to keep
complaining about the dirty spurs accompanying it on 11520 and 11540, as
well as the leapfrog mixing product with Spanish 11550 landing on 11510.
Possibly they got the message and/or some victim broadcaster complained,
since suddenly Sept 4 at 1258 we find WEWN on 12160 instead and without
the spurs!
Have they really been eliminated along with the QSY? This may be
coincidental, so further chex of the same transmitter on other frequencies
at other times will be needed. Or rather, all three transmitters, as they
could have been swapped around, but for now, no spurs either accompanying
the Spanish channels. Whatever happened to the fourth transmitter? Is it
still in service, even tho only three frequencies are ever used at once?
Or a rich source of spare parts?
1259 English ID on 12160 gave the new frequency already; meanwhile,
Spanish was still on 11550 and 12050.
The WEWN website frequency schedule <http://www.ewtn.com/radio/freq.htm>
altho still dated effective starting March 29! also has been amended to
show 12160 at 12-15, but strangely, each hour's entry for this frequency
only, has next to it a previous hour, "11, 12 and 13"; so does it start at
11 or 12 and does it end at 14 or 15?
Answer: the latter, as still going at 1445 recheck. But at 1459, 12160 was
already off, and at 1459:30, came up on 15610, then ID in Spanish! Boy,
are they confused; but then switch to English, and at 1501 re- open in
English with 15610 announced and program JIP. Could not detect any spurs
at 15600 or 15620 on the portable DX-398 in the yard, but fundamental too
weak at first to be sure. Normally, later in the day when WYFR is on 15600
at 19-23, it is constantly QRMed by WEWN spur. We shall hear.
Ex-11530 was 335 degrees over the pole to central and eastern China, plus
Taiwan and North Korea, so 12160 presumably is too, yet the target for it
now is shown as "SA" which apparently means South Asia (note: there are
too many continents starting with A-, so a second letter in abbrs. is
required!)
The full English schedule is apparently now:
00-09 11520 Af
09-12 11640 SEA meaning SE Asia
12-15 12160 SA meaning E Asia
15-17 15610 Eu
17-20 15610 [no target specified! But listed as CIRAF-9 Maritime Provinces
and eastern Quebec, really the same 40-degree azimuth as
before and after]
20-24 15610 ME
Spanish to Cuba/SAm, 155 degrees:
01-11 11870
11-15 12050
15-17 11520
17-01 17510
Spanish to Mexico/CAm, 220 degrees:
05-13 7555
13-22 11550
22-05 5810
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 6)
See previous report: WEWN, 15610, far too weak to tell if it was still
spurry plus and minus 10, around 1915 check Sept 4, tho WYFR was
sufficient on 15600 in Russian.
At 1342 Sept 5, 12160 WEWN English again audible sufficiently and no
detectable spurs. Next check at 1520, 12160 was off and now 11550 in
English with Catholic stuff, toll-free 1-877-573-7825, and het as always a
problem on 11550 due to off-frequency Tainan, Taiwan transmitter at 14-17
among other hours.
As per WEWN's own website sked quoted in my previous report, during the 15
UT hour, English is supposed to be on 15610, Spanish on 11520 and 11550.
11520 indeed in Spanish, but so is weak JBA 15610! They have their wires
crossed, two frequencies/languages exchanged antennas too? One transmitter
is supposed to be 24h in English to a variety of targets; the other two
are supposed to be both in Spanish, one aimed at CAm/Mexico, the other at
Cuba/SAm, whatever the frequencies.
Unlike 24.5 hours earlier, when WEWN had English and Spanish on reversed
frequencies, Sept 6 at 1548 check, 11520 \\ 11550 in Spanish, not \\ weak
15610 so presumably correctly in English.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld Sept 6)

USSR [Russia, CIS states, also TKM special, see below]
Russian Zarya Antenna.
What is the translation of the term "Zarya" or "S. Zarya"used to describe
the 2.2 km long Russian MF antenna? We have heard them referred to as
"large sunrise" and "small sunrise" (the 2.2 km and 1.6 km versions,
respectively), but have no idea of the origin or validity of this name for
them.
Does anyone have any technical literature describing these antennae? I
have not had time when I have worked at former Russian sites where there
were examples of these antennas to make measurements or even more than
rough sketches of their electrical design.
[later] There are 3 of these 'sunrise' antennas at the Orzu, Tajikistan
site. 2 large ones and one smaller (15 masts if I remember correctly). One
of the large ones is no longer useable due to some damage, but the other
is intact although not presently in use, I understand. The small one was
in use daily when I was at the site working.
Many txs can also be switched to normal mast antennas for local sces. Some
txs or freqs are not currently in use.
Besides the Popovka zarya antenna I have also seen pictures of the Krasne
and Chita zaryas. Both of the latter ones are of the 36 tower type. The
towers carry a complicated structure of several \\ wires. Each wire seems
to follow a zig-zag pattern upwards-downwards. The Chita picture is a
broadside one taken from a considerable distance, so no details are
visible. The Krasne picture is much like the Popovka picture featured in
the WRTH.
(Ben Dawson-WA-USA, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews / SW TXsite Sept 5)
The correct spelling is zarya, and this word means daybreak, dawn (also
dusk, sunset, the start of something).
(Olle Alm-SWE, SW TXsite Sept 5)
Original table of Zarya antennas in former Sowjetunion originate from Olle
Alm in 2002year. Now with more clean images available on satellite image
database see my updates:

So I guess, 37 51 15n 58 21 58e was the shortwave site with 10

Also Ashgabad 1125 kHz Zarya - aimed at Kabul, Lahore, New Delhi was

The 110 degr Zarya antenna at Orzu was in use during the early years of
the site for Radio Moscow Chinese service overnight. I guess it has been
left rusting since this transmission to China was cancelled.

VIETNAM/CHINA Beijing China registered 7435 kHz since March 29th, 2009.
New Freq. of VOV-1 on 7435 kHz. I was able to confirm that 7435 kHz
broadcasted it at night (local time). Received at 1157-1202* UT on Sept 4.
It is completely blocked until 1157 UT by CRI Chinese on same freq.
Hiroshi
(Sei-ichi Hasegawa-JPN NDXC, dxld Sept 6)
Thanks to this tip, was able to hear VOV-1 on Sept 6, on 7435. At 1153 UT
heard in Vietnamese under CRI (which signed off at 1157 UT). VOV-1 signed
off at 1201 UT. Sept 7 noted VOV-1 with 1158* UT. Stronger here than the
\\ on 5975 kHz, which continued on (scheduled for 1700* UT).
Have also recently noted a strong signal from VOV on 12019.49v kHz, in the
time periods of 1200 to 1227* (Japanese); 1230 to 1257* (English); 1300 to
1327* (Indonesian) and 1330 to 1357* (English); \\ 9839.86v kHz.

Editor of the Clandestine List.
When Anker Petersen in year 2000 took over the Clandestine List from Finn
Krone, it became a part of the annual Domestic Broadcasting Survey (DBS).
At that time there were still many covert broadcasts made by opposition
groups and transmitted from radiostations at secret locations. Nowadays
most of these have disappeared, but are replaced by many target broadcasts
produced by opposition groups living in exile who lease air time on
international broadcasting stations. It is an interesting, but
timerequiring job to follow all the frequent changes. Anker no more has
time to do that job, besides being editor of the DBS, the Tropical Bands
Monitor, the DX-Window and being Chairman of the DSWCI. If anybody is
willing to take over editing the Clandestine List, maybe entirely on the
DSWCI website, please contact Anker Petersen.
