Re loud commercials, my TV in its menu, can invoke ALC
Automatic Loudness Control. It works very well, but on one occasion,
a local TV station was not only using loudness boost but, wide range
audio.
This was a bit too much for the ALC and it would crack like a whip on
some content, particularly women's voices. Fortunately after I
contacted the ham who ran the technical side there, it got fixed.
So look at your TV menu and see if it has in audio settings ALC.
