RAOTC
Monthly Broadcast for March 2025
Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 3rd of March 2025 at 8 pm local time; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
This broadcast, once again, features part of an earlier one, this time from September 2002; it plays for longer than usual, lasting for 40 minutes. All 3 items are radio related.
The main feature is the biography of Alan Vagg, VK3AGV SK. In his long life, Alan had a distinguished career, serving in both military and civilian services. Some of his adventures took him on perilous manoeuvres behind enemy lines in PNG.
The second feature concerns the maritime radio operator, Geoff Woad VK6AX SK. It concentrates mainly on what turned out to be an adventurous sea voyage between England and the mediterranean post WW2.
The third feature gives a history of the MFJ company and its founder.
Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RHT state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.
The broadcast date again is Monday March 3rd. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.
If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to audio files on the RAOTC website:

WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap Up
Last week, several activators were out and about, with four activations taking place across the state. Early in the week, Matt, VK7MAT, activated Reedy Marsh Conservation Area, located on the banks of Brushy Lagoon, about 20 minutes north of Westbury. Contacts were made on 40m SSB and FT8.
On Tuesday, Phil, VK7ID, and Stuart, VK7FADZ, headed into the hills for some SOTA activations. Phil, VK7ID, activated MacGregor Peak summit, located in Eaglehawk Neck. After a steep hike to the summit, Phil, VK7ID, set up next to the summit trig point and logged 12 QSOs on 40m and 20m, including three summit-to-summit contacts. MacGregor Peak is situated within the Tasman National Park, making it eligible for both POTA and WWFF as well.
Stuart, VK7FADZ, made his way to the summit of Collins Cap, which stands at an elevation of 1063 metres and offers breathtaking views of the Derwent Valley. During his activation, Stuart, VK7FADZ, logged 8 QSOs on 40m and was able to complete 2 summit-to-summit contacts, one of which was with Phil, VK7ID. Itâ€Ös always great to make a summit-to-summit contact with another VK7 operator.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rod, VK7HAM, Al, VK7AN, and Peter, VK7ZPE, skipped the hustle and bustle of the Launceston Cup and headed to the peaceful Reedy Marsh Conservation Area. This dual-reference site qualifies for both WWFF and POTA, where each operator logged 24 QSOs during their activation. If you're tuning in on a Wednesday, youâ€Öll likely hear VK7HAM, VK7AN, and VK7ZPE activating a park in the Northern regionâ€öso be sure to join in and snag a contact with them!

Nic VK7WW unable to attend the Wednesday Club Room Technical Night, because he was hosting the on air TestNet and TechNet session dropped through during Friday morning tea to show us his latest acquisition. Nic did post pictures on Discord during his Net Night of his new multi band radio receiver with digital and analogue display, but they didnâ€Öt do it justice. It looked small in the pictures, but in the flesh it really was small. When I say small I mean it came in a 73 by 32 by 12mm 3D printed case. It sported a colour display just under 50mm diagonal with a 170 by 320 pixel resolution which was crisp and easy to read.
As far as the radio side went it has multiple bands covering long wave, medium wave and shortwave to nearly 30MHz plus a 66 to 108 MHz FM band. There is nothing above 108 MHz so that means no aircraft to tower chatter. The internal speaker is only 15 by 11 mm but gives a surprising good account of itself in sound reproduction. With the built-in 800mAh battery you have about 10 hours or run time. Recharging is via the USB C socket. Standard operating modes of AM and FM are normal but the inclusion of USB and LSB reception modes is the icing on the cake. The inclusion of a BFO to tune any slightly off frequency signals worked very well for SSB reception.
Even though the SI-4732 “Radio on a chip†has been around for over ten years in different variations this would be the smallest useful version I have seen. It certainly is good value when you consider it is in the sub $50 price bracket. Just search for Pocket Mini Radio or Amazing Small Radio on the internet.
The radio chip is combined with an ESP-32-S3 microcontroller to handle all the radio chip interfacing as well as displaying the frequency and menus. The screen is not touch sensitive so menu options are selected by a rotary control knob to scroll through the options and a momentary push to select. This setup works well and is pretty intuitive. A telescopic antenna mounted on a SMA plug comes as standard, Nic also purchased the optional printed circuit board loop antenna.
Nic has been testing it out around the HF bands listening to a few amateur nets and gives it a glowing report.
This one has a black case but for those of us that can remember the ABC program “The Inventors†back in 1970â€Ös ……. yes it does come in different colours, HiHi
While we are speaking of old things, Idris VK7ZIR…. no not him, but what he brought in to morning tea.
He had a circa 1960â€Ös Sierra 164B Radio Frequency power meter to show anyone interested.
This refugee from a car boot sale came in a substantial carry case and was obviously well travelled. The case itself was in good condition apart from a broken and much repaired leather and cable tie carry handle, with rusty ends. Easily replaced. Once on the table, it was noticed why the case would not shut properly, it was because the meter still had a slug plugged in.
Much interest was gathering by now, and a “brains trust†was soon at work figuring how to remove the slug. Not being the same as a good old Bird 43 where the slug came out easily, those with higher experience showed that one had to release the meter housing from the base of the instrument by way of clips, then unplug the meter connection from the slug, and then lift the slug upwards, released by yet another clip. Quite a process!
There was however, method in the madness, as the slug had an inbuilt mechanism so that by operating a knob on the top of the slug, the power level scaling on the meter could be changed by lowering or raising a pick-up on the slug thus varying the attenuation to the meter.
If you had the full complement of ten plug-in slugs or modules you can conduct “Test and Measurements†within the frequency range from 2 to 1,000 MHz and power from 100 mW to 5 kW!
With a little TLC to the case and a new handle, it would be quite presentable and a useful instrument. Thanks Idris.
As always pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs†for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

AR Education News
Staten Island Teachers Learn to Use Radio Tech to Teach STEM
The National Association for Amateur Radio hosted a four-day training event to show educators how to download weather satellite images, use digital decoding tools and use radios and antennas to find signals.
New York teachers gathered at Staten Island Technical High School to learn more about radio technology and its role in shaping the future.
To bring this knowledge to the classroom, the National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) hosted a four-day training event that explained the benefits of radio technology.
Through hands-on activities, educators learned how to incorporate amateur (ham) radio and wireless technology into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.
At the event, teachers used radios and antennas to learn how to direction find signals, download weather satellite images, use digital decoding tools, and more.
“I went to the ARRL Teachers Institute looking for new ways to engage my students, and I came back with an exciting new toolbox of knowledge and resources,†said Thomas Smolka, a teacher at Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School. “Itâ€Ös been one of the most beneficial professional development experiences of my career. A game-changer for your STEM classroom and Telemetry Communications /applications for the new solar car team. Iâ€Öm very thankful to Staten Island Tech for hosting this opportunity.â€
By incorporating this knowledge into classrooms, students will learn and experiment with STEM areas of instruction. They will get to participate in hands-on activities that give meaningful connections to lessons that would normally be abstract in the classroom.
For more information, visit the ARRL website and Steve Goodgame (K5ATA) is the contact point.
