WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap Up
Introducing the VK7 Broadcastâ€Ös new weekly wrap-up for WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA! This wrap-up will cover everything from act
ivations and awards to upcoming events, funny moments, and useful tips and tricks.
What are WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA? These are programs encouraging licensed amateur radio operators to visit, enjoy and operate
portable equipment from summits, islands, a variety of parks and public lands. Operators who set up a temporary station at a s
ummit, island or park are known as activators, while others who 'spot' and complete contacts with them are called hunters.
Did you know that VK7 has a combined total of 1,978 summits, islands and park references available for activation or hunting? T
hat's impressive for an island state!
Over the past few weeks, numerous activations have taken place across the state. These include the Derby Regional Reserve (VK7H
AM & VK7FF), four POTA beaches in Bridport (VK7MAT), a SOTA summit on Schouten Island (VK7TW & VK7FREU), with Murray (VK7ZMS) p
roviding transport for Justin & Reuben to and from the island. The island was also activated for IOTA (OC-233). Other activatio
ns also occurred at the Bay of Fires Conservation Area (VK7TO) and a first-time activation of the Brid River Conservation Area,
located about 9 km northwest of Scottsdale (VK7HAM, VK7ZPE, VK7AN, and VK7FF).
So far this year, VK7 Activators have made 344 QSOs activating, while VK7 Hunters have been busy, making over 170 QSOs. Itâ€Ös
fantastic to see VK7â€Ös supporting these programs.
To encourage operators to get out and activate, Iâ€Öll be donating a new Quansheng UV-K5 dual-band portable to the VK7 operator
who activates the most summits, islands and parks between February 9, 2025, and March 31, 2025, and uploads their logs to the
relevant programs. If you activate a multi-reference site, each reference will count toward your total. And donâ€Öt worry, even
if you donâ€Öt get your activation numbers to officially activate the reference, Iâ€Öll still count that toward your total. Hu
nters, stay tunedâ€öIâ€Öll have something for you later in the year!
I encourage you all, either as an activator or hunter, to support these great programs.
73, Matt, VK7MAT

News from the North West
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club
Annual General Meeting
The Clubs Annual General meeting was held on Saturday 1st February 2025. President Andrew VK7XR advised it was an interesting y
ear for the club. The Treasurer advised the club is in a healthy place, with current funds of just under $9200 and projected ex
penditures were also presented.
The following members were elected:
President - Andrew Hay VK7XR, Vice-President - Brenton Jones VK7HP, Secretary is vacant, Treasurer - Eric Van Der Neut VK7E
V, Committee member - Mike Townsend VK7TM and second committee member is Anne Landers VK7BYL.
The Bimonthly meeting was held straight after the AGM and the club welcomed Cheryl VK1CB to the meeting.
Members formally agreed to help the Ulverstone Radio Operators Club, in working together to provide Radio comms for Endurance R
ides.
The Club has agreed to allow members to join club meetings via Zoom, as we have some members unable to attend meetings, due to
health or mobility issues.
A discussion on allowing Echo link to be connected to the Mt Duncan site was deferred, till after the new repeaters are install
ed.
The Club has received a very generous donation from a club member, he has bought two new, Yaseu DR-2X dual band repeaters. The
Club member will donate one of the repeaters to the club. The 2nd repeater, two club members, have each made a $500 donation t
o assist in its purchase, leaving the club an outstanding amount of $930.00, The club then had a generous club member add anoth
er $500 donation, leaving the club with just $430 to pay..
Club members voted to accept the offer and will fund the $930 deficit.
The existing 70cm repeater will be serviced and maintained as a backup repeater. The 2-metre repeater whose status is not known
, will be refurbished as a standby repeater. The new Yaesu repeater come with 3yrs warranty, so we anticipate a smooth operatio
n, we will also have the ability to use each new repeater, for either 2 metres or 70cm as a bonus..
A new repeater committee was voted in, consisting of Mike VK7TM Senior Telecommunications Technician, Andrew VK7XR Radio & TV T
echnician, and VK7HP Broadcast engineer.
The Club will email all members to see what they would like to do when attending meetings, some suggestions were winding transf
ormerâ€Ös, how to use an oscilloscope. Explanation of digital radio, Allstar, VK Link, Node Radios, digital modes like FT8, WSP
R.
The Club plans to have a microwave day, with some club memberâ€Ös maybe on Table Cape, others on Braddons Lookout having a micr
owave field day. VK7XR and VK7TM have procured microwave equipment in the range 1.2Ghz, 2.4Ghz, 5ghz and 10Ghz. And we will adv
ertise the days to create interest.
With the summer weather the Club is also looking at informal meetings then a radio comms event on HF at the Scout Hall or a Par
k Location.
Members brought up engaging with educators, TAFE, schools and the clubs new FCall, to see how we can interest the younger gener
ation and get more FCalls joining the club
Brenton VK7HP brought along for show and tell, a self-winding, spring powered relay system, the timing of the relay closure cou
ld be adjusted, the unit was used by our Tasmanian energy provider, and was back in the day, built by an electrical engineering
manufacturing firm in Melbourne. The unit was a fine example of products that used to be manufactured in Australia.

Last year Ross VK7ALH brought in the Heathkit SB-101 for our perusal, this week he brought in its predecessor the Heathkit SB-1
00 HF Transceiver Circa 1966. The unit has eight 500 kHz Amateur-Bands between 3.5 and 29.5 MHz, with approximately 100 watts o
utput of SSB or CW. They were mainly sold in kit-form and were very popular in their day.
It pretty much looks as though all the parts are back together, just needs a bit of work in the mechanical coupling to the vari
able capacitors to go. Yet another work in progress, thanks Ross.
Peter VK7KPC donated to the club an early crystal set, homemade and incorporating an actual piece of crystalline mineral, in th
is case galena and a thin probe to act as the crystal detector.
I believe it was originally made to demonstrate how a crystal set works to the scouts at JOTA weekends.
It will be cleaned up tested and continue to be demonstrated at JOTA along with anyone interested in early crystal sets, thank
you Peter.
Colin VK7ZCF, had his newly acquired USB Cable Checker module the same type of module as Ian VK7IG brought in earlier this year
. The tester was from Treedix.com, it is a palm size unit with the full array of all types of USB and Lightning connectors dupl
icated on opposite sides of the main board. To use it was easy, just plug a cable into which ever socket was appropriate for ea
ch end of the cable. The board had a LED for each of the pins of each connector. For easy interpretation the pins did not use n
umbers but the signal functions description - like earth, data receive plus and minus etc. The LED lights indicate when continu
ity is OK. The unit can be powered externally or from the internal CR2032 button battery. However in true Colin form, he though
t it needed a case, so he designed and printed a 3D case to mount the module into. The top panel of the case was clear acrylic
so that all the function LEDs could be seen and interpreted. A very handy cable tester for modern cables Colin.
Stuart VK7ES demonstrated his new “Portable Electric Tin Absorber”, well thatâ€Ös what it was called in the advert. We migh
t better known it as a vacuum de-soldering tool. The “Portable Electric Tin Absorber” model number is BBT-680 and is a comp
act all in one handheld unit that requires 230 Volts power for the 30 Watt heated suction nozzle and solenoid. It relies on a r
easonably substantial solenoid to elongate the internal silicone bellows, this causes a low air pressure which hopefully sucks
the molten solder off the joint and through the nozzle into the unit. It comes with a selection of three suction nozzles coveri
ng 1, 1.5 and 2.5mm.
This little unit will certainly keep you going…. until your “last century” Weller de-soldering station spare part arrives
. This would make an excellent field maintenance tool Stuart, thanks for the demo.
Last Friday morning tea provided club members with quite a taster! Not the food type but a look at a long term project. Martin
VK7JAH demonstrated his “work in progress” video studio in a box. Quite literally a fully functioning, but not complete yet
, multi camera studio where everything packs down in to a medium sized plastic crate to fit on his carâ€Ös back seat.
He had:
Three high resolution cameras one being fully remote controllable
Video switcher monitor and console incorporating the ability to live internet stream
Teleprompter monitor and computer
Character generator monitor and computer
There was also some neat handiwork in combining two small multi-monitor stands to hold the three monitors and two computers. Th
e demonstration was excellent with much promise of things to come. It will obviously take a while to work out the best configur
ation of hardware and software but you appear to be well on the way, definitely stay tuned for more project updates.
One other of Martinâ€Ös passions is astronomy, so among other uses I am certain there is going to be some interesting astronomi
cal events either live streamed or as he is working towards being broadcast on the Amateur band that overlaps with domestic DVB
-T broadcasting.
As always pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Nights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjH5mTZI9s4
Last Wednesday night we started with Hayden VK7HH and Murray VK7ZMS in the studio with their recent early morning trip to Mt We
llington for VHF/UHF contacts using tropospheric propagation.
They worked several stations on 2m, 70cm, 23cm, 2.4, 3.4 GHz and 5.7 GHz using the new transverter with just 2.5W into a 600mm
dish and set a new VK7 record.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQt2U1BOU1g&t=0s
We then moved to something a little different - using Audacity the
freeware multiplatform audio manipulation application. Justin VK7TW used the WIA Broadcast example with multiple tracks, alignm
ent of tracks, editing of tracks, Speeding up playback of tracks, editing tracks, aligning tracks and applying effects.
We then went through the finalising ECN or Equalisation / Compression / Normalisation process before creating a MP3.
https://www.audacityteam.org/
There was then a promo of the statewide SSTV net nights along with a Space Weather and Hepburn - Tropo Report.
We have our forum night this coming Wednesday night and so the WEGs night is in recess for a few weeks.
See you soon.
