VK7 AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
FOR SUNDAY 2nd July 2023

--------------------------------

Welcome to the VK7 Amateur Radio News and this was first broadcast on Sunday the 2nd July 2023. At the mike of VK7WI this week is Justin, VK7TW from sunny VK5!

On Sunday this broadcast goes out on repeaters all over VK7 and on digital radio - DMR Talk Group 5 and D-Star Reflector 91C by VK7ZCR.

We go out on medium and high frequency courtesy of the following rebroadcast stations:

On 1.862 MHz by Graham, VK7GS,

On 3.670 MHz by Dale, VK7DG,

On 7.140 MHz by Peter, VK7TPE,

On 14.130 MHz by Ross, VK7ALH and

On 28.525 MHz by Garry, VK7JGD.

We also go out on UHF CB Channel 15 thanks to Mark VK7FMAC in the Hobart area.

RAOTC News
Broadcast for July

Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 3rd of July 2023 at 8 pm local time; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night

for those listening on Sunday.

This month we hear another in the series of historic broadcasts collected by Andrew, VK3CAH. It was read by Alan VK3AMD, SK in November 2001.

Items included an amusing tale of ‘stewedâ€Ö tea being served to military personnel on one of the PNG islands.

Of interest closer to home is a letter supplied by Jim Davis, VK7OW, SK. It was written to Jim by a member of Howard Kingsley Loveâ€Ös family. Howard was not only a radio amateur but

owner of the Kingsley Radio company, perhaps best known for production of the famous AR7 receiver.

The major item was supplied by George, VK3XD, SK who was sent to Darwin in the wake of Cyclone Tracy to restore radio communications. He was there for 5 weeks.

It is interesting to hear the, generally unrecognised, part radio amateurs played in providing emergency communications for several weeks.

The broadcast concludes with a true story that could be subtitled ‘Divine Interventionâ€Ö.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RAD state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream

or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is July 3rd. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening

to these broadcasts.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website:

VK7 Centennial Month
NW WIA Centenary Event 2023

Hi fellow amateurs.

On Saturday the 24th June we held the NW WIA Centenary event in the Scout Hall at Ulverstone, a frosty start, with only one rain shower, otherwise the weather was great. With 25 exhibitor stands, visitors had plenty to look at. Lots of interactive stands and the operating HF, FT8, 2m/70cm and 1.2GHz stations.

We had locals residents from the NW Coast come in for a sticky beak, as well as amateurs from the North, and some of our elderly NW Amateurs which was great.

The free sausage sizzle was certainly a hit, with over 100 snags devoured, and a big thank you to the Barby ladies quartet for cooking.

Whenever you looked around, the hall was full, and I had great delight in showing some younger children some of the interactive displays.

Dave VK7DC erected a 20/40m HF dipole and 1.2 GHz antenna, and VK7NET had up a 40m squid pole for FT8, and Peter VK7KPC had up a military HF antennas to communicate on his military radios.

Local QRM caused some havoc, but VK7DC managed 1.2 GHz contacts in VK3, and VK7NETs FT8 was heard around the world.

A big thankyou to those that helped set up up the hall Friday, and cleaned up Saturday, and returned Barby and Tables on Monday. A big shout out to the REAST and NTARC members that came and setup displays. We were blessed with a local school supplying additional tables, the local Apex club supplying their trailer mounted Barby, and the local scouts who supplied the hall, tables and ran coax through the building to assist us.

As well as Coastal FM who brought their outside broadcast van and advertised the event . A great day was had, thanks to the many volunteers and generous support, thank you all. Pictures of the event, can be seen on the VK7 Amateur Radio Face Book page.

NW WIA Centenary Dinner

On Saturday night the 24th June, a Centenary dinner was held in the Chelsea room at Furnerâ€Ös hotel and it was pleasing to see a large turnout of amateurs from the NW Coast and visitors from the North and South.

A scrumptious meal was enjoyed by those attending, with many laughs and banter making for a fun night.

The evening concluded with the cutting of a very yummy Chocolate Centenary cake , and we finally went our separate ways after 9pm, a great social night.

Southern Centennial Lunch

All Tasmanian Amateurs are reminded that the Centenary Lunch on 22nd July 2023 at the Shoreline Hotel is fast approaching.

Even faster than you think, as the cut-off date to R.S.V.P is July 12. For that you need to contact Michael Jenner, VK7FB at jenner.michael(at)gmail.com

The menu is available at the link on the email edition of this broadcast. So therefore the cost is up to you.

We will have a birthday cake, or two, with dietary considerations in mind. We will also have a photographic display of Tasmanian radio history thanks to Linda VK7QP.

Bring the YL/XYL and Harmonics.

But as the numbers are limited you had better get in early.

NW Centenary Video Playlist

Tony VK7AX lets us know that he has created a YouTube Playlist called "WIA 100 Centenary Celebrations - Tasmania".

This List is an Archive for Videos & Slide Shows depicting NW activity over recent years as part of the WIA 100 Centenary Celebrations in Tasmania over the last 100 Years.

Some of these videos were aired at the Celebration Day conducted at the Scout Hall, Ulverstone on 24th. June 2023.

Tony anticipates editing more material associated with amateur activity in Tasmania over recent years and uploading to the archive as time permits. Most of the videos will be uploaded to the proposed WIA Special Archive site when the site becomes available (still in development stages I am told).

The VK7AX videos are archived on YouTube and can be accessed on the links in the email edition of the broadcast.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Catching up on the 22nd June net, the participants were VK7s – ZAB, OO, FGGT, ZBX and PD all sharing various subjects like:

Tigers as street art and a large statue

    A robotic look dog

A series of locations on Tassieâ€Ös north east coast including the Hillwood Café

And a large mesh dish where a ladder had obstructed its movement – Ouch, a bit of panel beating required!

Moving on to this weekâ€Ös net on the 29th June and there was a special VK7 Centennial Celebration where Steve VK7OO used the VK7WIA Callsign for the QSOs.

A busy net that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZAB, EKA, ZGK, TW, ZSB, IT, PD, FGGT, KT, ZIR, ZBX and KPC all sharing fifty photos via the North South link. Mainly radio related.

A reminder that Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Also if you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Those of us that have not been on the NTARC web site in the last few days would have missed an update in the “Notices†section that has been added. Something completely different to most of our postings, a project, something to actually construct, and according to the heading it is “Celebrating 100 years of Amateur Radio in Tasmania June 2023â€. The Century “Cent†(1 Watt) 80m CW Transmitter Mk I by VK7WW (Nic).

Who better to describe what it is all about than Nic VK7WW, so over to Nic….

“I have the privilege of running the TechNet and TestNet for the Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club (NTARC). The TestNet is a 30minute net on 3.580 MHz combined with a slow-Morse course. The TestNet gives QRP builders an opportunity to test their simple low-power (mostly CW) transmitters, even if they donâ€Öt know Morse code! (Just send a string of Vs – Beethovenâ€Ös Fifthâ€Ö – di di di dah)

To commemorate the Centenary Celebrations of 2023, I decided to build a simple crystal controlled, low power ( >1w), Morse code transmitter for 80m. It uses commonly available parts, is very easy to build, and it performs very well, with a ‘sweetâ€Ö clean signal.â€

Now this is not your usual “look what I builtâ€, here is some info and a few blurred pictures etc.

In my opinion it is an excellently presented project. Even if you are not into 80m CW it is well worth perusing the article. It is complete with legible circuit diagrams, component overlays, parts list and wiring instructions, interspersed with sharp close up photos of the constructed project to assist.

Here is a small excerpt from the “Building†section:

“Building is pretty easy. I mounted the prototype in a box I made from copper laminate from another project, seen in the photos. You can place it in a housing of your choice. Some builders mount it on another copper laminate board to use as a ground/“earthâ€, on which they can solder all components that go to ground. Much like what I did with my prototype. (See photos.)

Others may want to fix solder tags to all components that go to ground and bolt them inside a metal case.

I used a piece of single sided copper laminate (cut approximately to size) and a hand held hacksaw blade to create the separate sections – size detailed in the component layout page. I drilled mounting holes in each end of the copper laminate and screwed it to a wooden pallet so it couldnâ€Öt move, as I cut the pattern out with the hacksaw blade.â€

Nic does an excellent job of methodically taking you through the construction of this project. One of the really important aspects of this project, apart from its simplicity is that at the time of writing, all components are available at Jaycar, yes you heard correctly, actually available locally at Jaycar!

Now I said it was simple, have a listen to the component count. Resistors: three, Capacitors: seven, Inductors: two commercial and one small balun former with only fourteen turns that need to be wound,

Transistors: two, nothing exotic just a general purpose BC548 and a good old BD139 used as the output final, some sundry parts like a switch, sockets and copper laminate PCB, a pretty small inventory really. The one important part is the crystal for 3.579MHz. Remember back to analogue colour TV days? It was the frequency of the ‘colour-burstâ€Ö used in the American NTSC system, as opposed to 4.433 MHz used in the PAL system that Australia opted for. This crystal is also available at Jaycar and allows the transmit frequency to sit very comfortably in the 80m band.

Now for assistance: Nic said “Good luck! Feel free to call in on the TestNet and TechNet 73 Nic.†Now you canâ€Öt be more helpful than that!

Evidently while testing the unit and operating from the Legana area on 3.580 MHz, between 7 and 9pm, Nic has had QSOs and reports come from Canberra, Gosford, Victoria, South Australia, Perth WA and even New Zealand. Not bad for just over 1 watt output!

As an addendum I noted that Nic called it the “Mk Iâ€, this hopefully could suggest that there may be some more tantalising versions or modifications to come, keep checking the web site, you never know. Thanks Nic for your obvious enthusiasm and contribution to a Century of Amateur Radio in Tasmania and probably to the concept from one hundred years ago, “if you want it then you will have to build it…. “

The only other VK7 participant was Garry VK7JGD in the Phone Section. Congratulations to you both for waving the flag.
