VK7 Centennial Month
North West Centennial Open Day
This broadcast compilation comes from Ulverstone where yesterday we had a huge North West Amateur Radio Club NWTARC Centennial Open Day.
Your editor got a sneek preview on Friday night and it was looking huge. The hall was cram packed with amateur radio related tables covering many many topics including:
Historical, ALARA, Microwaves, Antennas, ADSB, APRS, Morse Code, SOTA/POTA/WWFF, ATV, NTRAC Equine Endurance Tracking, DMR, Optical Comms, Microwave ATV, Military radios, Portable Operation, SSTV, Training, HF radio operating VK7WIA and much more. There will be a huge report in next weekâ€Ös broadcast.
Centenary Lunches and Dinners
There is a NW Centenary Dinner from 6:30pm - 24th June, in the Chelsea room at Furnerâ€Ös Hotel in Ulverstone. A Centenary Cake is being planned for attendees. If you would like to attend, please reply asap, as limited seating to Eric VK7EV - Ericvdneut1@bigpond.com
There is a Southern Centenary lunch from noon at the Shoreline Hotel - Howrah on 22 July 2023 from Noon - RSVP to Mike Jenner VK7FB ASAP at email: jenner.michael(at)gmail.com
Top of the Centennial Pops
Graham VK4BB let me know that the VK7 Centennial National News broadcast from last week has topped the download pops with well over 900 downloads where the usual average is around 750.
Special Callsign usage VK7WIA
The special callsign has been getting some usage and a huge thank you to all who have been activating the callsign. Please note that even though the callsign roster is full it is just a case of contacting Reg Emmett VK7KK on phone 0417 391 607 if you feel you would like to activate - even for one day.
Roster for the rest of June is:
22-24 June - NWTARC - Ulverstone
25-27 June - VK7KT - Burnie
28-30 June - VK7OO - Newtown
Special QSL Card
Our special VK7WIA QSL cards and Award certificates are taking shape and features a travel through time with amateur field days in 1930s, 1950s and 2000s.
VK7 Centennial Award Certificate
The special award certificate for contacting the centennial callsign is being finalised and looks fantastic. A great addition to any shack wall. Given we are over half way through the month amateurs need to get their skates on as VK and ZL amateurs need 10 contacts with at least one being phone and outside VK amateurs need at least 5 contacts with VK7WIA.
Take a look at the website and facebook events for more details.

Contest News
Winter VHF and Above Field Day
This weekend is the is Winter VHF/UHF field day time!
This year the field day started from 01:00 UTC on June 24th through to 00:59 UTC on June 25th. Plenty of categories to participate in, no need to go portable although it's a great opportunity to get out and about and play radio, but you can still operate from your home station.
The field day is aimed at VHF and up to the best places to listen for activity would be 52.525, 146.500, 439.000 and 1296.150 on FM, and of course the usual SSB frequencies of 50.150, 144.150, 432.150 are always worth a listen or a call.
Knowing your current grid square is a requirement for logging, so perhaps do some google earthing or use one of the many apps that will let you know your 6 digit maidenhead locator.
There are a couple of logging programs, VKCL and N1MM. Both will talk to your radio making logging easier.
Why not introduce a new licence holder to the world of field days, you never know where it may take them.
Please remember to submit your log after the contest has finished.
Hear you on the higher bands !

NTARC Test Net Feedback
The following was posted the recently established REAST Discord channel - titled CW-Dah-Dit-Dah by Lance VK7LA and it is some great feedback about the NTARC TestNet Morse Code Sessions that are run by mentor and elmer - Nick VK7WW and Lance said…
“I joined in the NTARC TestNet last night and thought I'd give a report for those interested.
1. Very low pressure. You don't have to sign in to the net, send or speak.
2. They have a discord channel where you can ask questions or type what you heard, but only if you want to.
3. Nick (the host) switches between SSB and CW, bookending the CW with "this is what I'm going to send" and "this is what I sent", making it very easy to follow along.
4. Apart from the morse, Nick explains the etiquette of what and why he does what he does. This is fantastic.
5. The morse characters were sent at 10 wpm, with larger spacing between characters.
All in all, a thoroughly positive experience. If you're early on in your morse journey, I would encourage you to make this a regular event on your calendar.
I've progressed beyond the target skill level, but will probably still listen in when I get a chance for the etiquette explanations.â€
Thanks to Lance for sharing his experience and to Nick for running these obviously helpful sessions.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Another quiet net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZAB, OO, FGGT, ZBX and PD all sharing fifteen photos via the North South link on interesting subjects that will be detailed in next weekâ€Ös news.
A note from Steve VK7OO that “VK7WIA will join this net next Thursday 29th June. To log a QSO you will need to exchange 2 pictures each way, one picture must include RST (where T is picture quality), 595 will suffice. VK7WIA will hold one QSO at a time, so please no pile ups. Scottie 2 mode preferredâ€.
A reminder that Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.
Also if you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

VK7RTV and VK7RDR Update
Following advice of 91.5 Tone being required to access the 2M Voice Repeater VK7RTV located at Stowport, we now further advise that both 2M VK7RTV and 70cm Voice Repeater VK7RDR are normally linked (other than broadcast times), using the Allstar Network.
Amateurs remote from these repeaters can access the repeaters as follows ....
VK7RTV Allstar Node 458983 / Echolink Node 467772 (VK7RTV-R)
VK7RDR Allstar Node 28348 / Echolink Node 337626 (VK7RDR-R)
As mentioned these repeaters will normally be in a linked state and occasionally may be linked to other amateur networked repeaters in VK2,3,4,6.
This action has been taken to try and generate some activity on these repeaters which most of the time remain in an unused and idle state.
It is perhaps timely to remind amateurs of ' SPECTRUMS ' Motto "USE THEM OR LOOSE THEM".
We hope to talk with you on the repeaters soon.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
Those of us that have not been on the NTARC web site in the last few days would have missed an update in the “Notices†section that has been added.
https://www.ntarc.net/notices
Something completely different to most of our postings, a project, something to actually construct, and according to the heading it is “Celebrating 100 years of Amateur Radio in Tasmania June 2023â€. The Century “Cent†(1 Watt) 80m CW Transmitter Mk I by VK7WW (Nic).
Who better to describe what it is all about than Nic VK7WW, so over to Nic….
“I have the privilege of running the TechNet and TestNet for the Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club (NTARC). The TestNet is a 30minute net on 3.580 MHz combined with a slow-Morse course. The TestNet gives QRP builders an opportunity to test their simple low-power (mostly CW) transmitters, even if they donâ€Öt know Morse code! (Just send a string of Vs – Beethovenâ€Ös Fifthâ€Ö – di di di dah)
To commemorate the Centenary Celebrations of 2023, I decided to build a simple crystal controlled, low power ( >1w), Morse code transmitter for 80m. It uses commonly available parts, is very easy to build, and it performs very well, with a ‘sweetâ€Ö clean signal.â€
Now this is not your usual “look what I builtâ€, here is some info and a few blurred pictures etc.
In my opinion it is an excellently presented project. Even if you are not into 80m CW it is well worth perusing the article. It is complete with legible circuit diagrams, component overlays, parts list and wiring instructions, interspersed with sharp close up photos of the constructed project to assist.
Here is a small excerpt from the “Building†section:
“Building is pretty easy. I mounted the prototype in a box I made from copper laminate from another project, seen in the photos. You can place it in a housing of your choice. Some builders mount it on another copper laminate board to use as a ground/“earthâ€, on which they can solder all components that go to ground. Much like what I did with my prototype. (See photos.)
Others may want to fix solder tags to all components that go to ground and bolt them inside a metal case.
I used a piece of single sided copper laminate (cut approximately to size) and a hand held hacksaw blade to create the separate sections – size detailed in the component layout page. I drilled mounting holes in each end of the copper laminate and screwed it to a wooden pallet so it couldnâ€Öt move, as I cut the pattern out with the hacksaw blade.â€
https://www.ntarc.net/s/CENT_VK7_TX.pdf
Nic does an excellent job of methodically taking you through the construction of this project. One of the really important aspects of this project, apart from its simplicity is that at the time of writing, all components are available at Jaycar, yes you heard correctly, actually available locally at Jaycar!
Now I said it was simple, have a listen to the component count. Resistors: three, Capacitors: seven, Inductors: two commercial and one small balun former with only fourteen turns that need to be wound,
Transistors: two, nothing exotic just a general purpose BC548 and a good old BD139 used as the output final, some sundry parts like a switch, sockets and copper laminate PCB, a pretty small inventory really. The one important part is the crystal for 3.579MHz. Remember back to analogue colour TV days? It was the frequency of the ‘colour-burstâ€Ö used in the American NTSC system, as opposed to 4.433 MHz used in the PAL system that Australia opted for. This crystal is also available at Jaycar and allows the transmit frequency to sit very comfortably in the 80m band.
Now for assistance: Nic said “Good luck! Feel free to call in on the TestNet and TechNet 73 Nic.†Now you canâ€Öt be more helpful than that!
Evidently while testing the unit and operating from the Legana area on 3.580 MHz, between 7 and 9pm, Nic has had QSOs and reports come from Canberra, Gosford, Victoria, South Australia, Perth WA and even New Zealand. Not bad for just over 1 watt output!
As an addendum I noted that Nic called it the “Mk Iâ€, this hopefully could suggest that there may be some more tantalising versions or modifications to come, keep checking the web site, you never know. Thanks Nic for your obvious enthusiasm and contribution to a Century of Amateur Radio in Tasmania and probably to the concept from one hundred years ago, “if you want it then you will have to build it…. “
Now continuing the CW theme, the WIA has just released on their web site the Harry Angel Memorial 80m Sprint – Final Results 2023 Contest. Peter VK7KPC, gained third place and a certificate in the CW Section, with only one contact separating the top three place holders, things were very close. The only other VK7 participant was Garry VK7JGD in the Phone Section. Congratulations to you both for waving the flag.
Competition link is in the text version.

Humour to finish with…
A reward of 500 microfarads is offered for information leading to the arrest of Hop-a-long Capacity. This un-rectified criminal escaped from a Weston primary cell where he had been clamped in ions ago awaiting the gauss chamber.
He is charged with the induction of an 18 turn coil named Milli Henry who was found choked and robbed of valuable joules. He is armed with a carbon rod and is a potential killer.
Capacity is also charged with driving a dc motor over a Wheatstone bridge and refusing to let the band-pass. If encountered, he may offer series resistance.
The electromotive force spent the night searching for him in a magnetic field, where he had gone to earth. They had no success and believed he had returned ohm via a short circuit.
He was last seen riding a kilocycle with his friend Eddy Current who was playing a harmonic.
