Statewide News
Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Another quiet net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – KT, ZAB, PD, FGGT, ZSB and OO all sharing seventeen photos via the noise free link.
There were various subjects like:
Correcting the grammar in a Kingâ€Ös speech and how “commas” are important but arenâ€Öt people
A long exposure water fall and the Cataract Gorge in flood
All creatures great and small, including a couple of pets
A street scene in Tasmazia and a novel complaints registering system
Big red illuminated Crosses on Hobartâ€Ös waterfront
A sports car at speed
A lonely transceiver and antenna array
Remember Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites that allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.
Also if you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
We begin this week by wishing all our mother members and listeners a Happy Motherâ€Ös Day. We trust that you all will be spoiled today by the family.
This week was very light on as far as news was concerned, but we do have one new special event.
Andrew VK7DW, will be enlightening us with a presentation this coming Wednesday club room technical night. Andrew will be covering some aspects of the new Green Cube Sat designated Italy Oscar 117 or IO-117 for short. It was launched from French Guiana in July 2022 for Sapienza University of Rome, to “Test an autonomous laboratory for the cultivation of microgreens on-board a CubeSat platform”.
Apart from the environmental and thruster payloads it also carries a 70cm digipeater for amateur radio use!
Andrew is going to chat about what the satellite is and how “us” amateurs can use the digipeater for QSO's. He will also be covering the downloading of the satellites telemetry packets, I assume a good percentage of these telemetry packets will contain data generated by the on board experiments. Hope to see you there for this “interesting on many levels” presentation.
Mug Order – The next personalised club mug order will be placed later next week, so if there are any last requests please see AndrĂ© VK7ZAB at this weekâ€Ös club technical night, e-mail the secretary on secretary(at)ntarc.net or via the NTARC Web site using “Contact Us”.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The Club Technical night - The next session will be on Wednesday the 17th of May and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm, running through to about 10.30 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.
Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. Why not pop in and join us for a cuppa there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.
The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday the 24th of May. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.
FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.
Thatâ€Ös all folks,

Menâ€Ös Shed News
Channel Menâ€Ös Shed
https://www.channelmenshed.org.au/
In the Autumn editions of the Tasmanian Menâ€Ös Shed Association magazine there is a wonderful story written by Bob VK7BS.
Bob talks about a change that is happening at the Channel Menâ€Ös Shed at Margate. This change involves basic electronics, micro controllers like arduino, RaspberryPis and ExpressIf devices and the shed now has its own amateur radio station with the callsign VK7CMS.
At least five of the CMS members have studied and have been successful in gaining their Foundation Licence and with the help of REAST members they setup the VK7CMS amateur radio station in the corner of the very well appointed lounge area.
The crew at the CMS have been very active participating in the John Moyle Memorial Field Day and are looking to become more involved in contests, awards and many other amateur radio activities.
I had the privilege of a guided tour of the huge shed at Margate thanks to Bob and I encourage anyone to go down to Margate and take a look.
Did I mention that the story about the CMS is right next to an article about a recipe for Spicy Stuffed Capsicums - YUM!
Thanks to the CMS and Bob who showed me around the very impressive shed down at Margate.

Technology News
AST SpaceMobile achieves space-based voice calls
AST SpaceMobile, which is currently building a groundbreaking space-based cellular broadband network accessible directly by standard mobile phones, has announced the successful completion of two-way voice calls made directly to everyday unmodified smartphones using the companyâ€Ös BlueWalker 3 (BW3) satellite. This is the first time anyone has ever achieved a direct voice connection from space to everyday cellular devices, the company said.
The voice calls were made from Texas to technology company Rakuten in Japan over AT&T spectrum using a Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphone, and were supported by engineers from Vodafone, Rakuten and AT&T. The calls validate the AST SpaceMobile patented system and architecture and demonstrate the power of the BW3 satellite â€ö understood to be the largest ever commercial communications array deployed in low Earth orbit â€ö acting as an important step to providing space-based 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and 5G cellular broadband globally.
In addition to test calls, AST SpaceMobile engineers conducted initial compatibility tests on a variety of smartphones and devices. The phones successfully exchanged SIM and network information directly to BW3 â€ö crucial for delivering broadband connectivity from space to any phone or device. Additional testing and measurements on the smartphone uplink and downlink signal strength confirm the ability to support cellular broadband speeds and 4G LTE/5G waveforms.
