WIA VK7 Centenary
Early newsletters please

In a recent issue of Amateur Radio you may have seen that Peter VK3RV is looking for early copies of Tasmanian newsletters. Linda VK7QP has many of these in the REAST VK7 archive and has been in touch with Peter to let him know.

If you have any early newsletters Linda would be pleased to receive them and scan them. She would then send selected scanned copies to Peter and also record them in the historical database we are creating as part of the VK7 Centenary project.

Linda has many copies of QRM, but not all. She has some parts of newsletters from the 1960s and would like to get more of them, and in better condition.

If you have any newsletters, please contact Linda VK7QP or your local VK7 Centenary rep - Peter VK7PD in the North, in the North West - Eric VK7EV or in the South - Rod VK7TRF

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

This week saw the release of the much anticipated John Moyle Memorial Field Day results. Congratulations to the following three NTARC members who each came first in their respective sections:

Peter VK7KPC, 24 Hour Portable Section - Single Operator, All mode, All band,

Ross VK7ZR, 6 Hour Portable Section - Single Operator, Phone, VHF, and

Peter VK7PD, 6 Hour Home Station - All mode, VHF. Certificates are “in the mail”.

Congratulations also to club members Andrew VK7DW, Lionel VK7ZLB and Andre VK7ZAB who all finished in the top ten of their sections.

While we are in a congratulatory mode well done to Douglas with his recent success in passing his foundation license and is now being issued with call sign VK7DGD. Once he gets his radio set up there will be a new voice on air. If you hear the call sign please make him feel welcome and say hi.

As all may have noticed winter appears to be rapidly approaching. With it the chance of getting enough club members together in one spot as well as good weather at the same time is diminishing rapidly. However last weekend worked out in our favour and a team headed off to Mt. Arthur and RAA for some pre winter repeater and track attention. Over to Tony for a brief rundown of their endeavours.

“The trip to Mt. Arthur on Saturday the 15th went very well indeed with both the track clearing rubbish removal and site maintenance all going to plan.

Once we left the mill car park we proceeded up the mountain and picked up the rest of the crew along the way. Track clearing was going well but the day was to be a full one on the repeater site so Dave made the decision to complete the track clearing on the way down or on another day, once at the top car park VK7KPC Peter set up to play a bit of radio, both VK7IT Lewis and VK7FEAT Stuart took the Kubota back down the track and completed all the necessary track clearing.

The rest of the crew headed up the mountain to complete the site works and once on site everyone took to their respective jobs and got them completed in good time. Lewis appeared at the repeater site some time later and assisted with various tasks and after a few hours the rubbish was reduced in size and stowed on the repeater site, out of sight and away from the track, The wind generator had been removed, the elevated rigging repairs were sorted by Wayne VK7FT, the RigRunner power switch and accessories were delivered to the site and after a bit of a tidy up and check we headed down the mountain only to be met by Stuart who was about two thirds of the way up way up….

Once we got back to the cars we headed back down the track to the car park where we headed off home after a full days work, I dont mind saying that I was a bit on the tired side myself and Tony VK7ZTT did a mighty job going up and completing a lot of work given that he was still quite fatigued by a recent bout of Covid.

Thanks go to: David VK7JD, Peter VK7ZPE, Wayne VK7FT and Kathy, Tony VK7ZTT, Peter VK7KPC, Stuart VK7FEAT and Lewis VK7IT, without you all none of the work completed would have been possible.

Regards - Tony VK7YBG”

Thank you Tony and team, its nice to know things are in good hands and all being readied for the winter season. Now back to some club house keeping matters…

A huge thank you to Brendan from FIOMarine who will be giving us a presentation on subsea acoustic communications including:

Challenges faced in the underwater environment such as wave propagation, thermal and salinity layering, multipathing.

Techniques used such as DSP, spread spectrum, and OFDM.

A demo of acoustic comms used in the fiobuoy system.

A demo directly sending ASCII text between two acoustic modems.

And if time allows I might talk about Brendan's audio design business building guitar pedals and synthesizers too.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/2JoFedbKt

Last Wednesday night we had a special visitor with Fred ON6QR from Bussells in Belgium who is here for around two months. Fred specialises in activating IOTA locations and has been around the world QRP activating islands on the air.

Jim VK7JDZ also bought along his new Hustler vertical trapped antenna and we tested using a VK5JST Antenna Analyser and a NanoVNA and the performance was impressive.

In the DATV studio Lance VK7ZA took the audience through his issues with his EFHW antenna at any power greater than 5 watts getting into his NBN Modem and possibly getting into the VDSL2 system in the neighbourhood back to the Fibre to the Node. This occurs on 80 and 40m as the VDSL2 system uses the spectrum up to 17.2MHz which is why 160/80/40m potentially affects the VDSL2 Modem.

Lance outlined the line and connector hygiene that prevents unnecessary ingress of RF signals. Lance also removed the old Cat3 telephony cabling that was picking up the RF causing mixing of common and differential signals which is what causes issue with signals to/from the modem.

There is an excellent NBN Advisory Paper that is available at the link on the email edition of the broadcast. Thanks Lance.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco2/documents/nbn-Amateur-Radio-guide-publication.pdf

Tony VK7XTC then took the audience through his portable doublet antenna that he is intending to use for WWFF/POTA.

Tony then showed his dual core BALUN for use with the Doublet and the testing he did by putting a 200 ohm resistor on the balanced side of the BALUN and an antenna analyser on the unbalanced side showing very low SWR across the HF frequency range. Thanks Tony.

Justin VK7TW then took the audience through the latest AR Magazine starting with the story of the death of Leap Seconds with a demonstration of how he captured the 2015 and 2016 leap seconds.

2015 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwlGbCumYCo

2016 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wg8RKbEAps

We then went through the remaining articles in the AR Magazine.

We finished with reminders of future events

Our DATV nights go into recess for three weeks as we have two presentations over the next two weeks.
