Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Another great net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – KT, ZGK, FGGT, ZAB, EKA, PD, ZBX, ZSB and TW all sharing twenty five photos.
There were various subjects like:
All creatures great and small
The Cuckoo Hill SOTA site
Trains and railway stations
A drag racer, a trio of Hot Rods and sports cars
A fighter jet, World War 2 bomber and a helicopter
A cloudy night sky above The York Creek Observatory at George Town. https://www.astro.yorkcreek.net/index.html
A couple of Icom transceivers on 1296 MHz
“Winnie The War Winner” transceiver set that was built from salvaged parts in Timor by Sparrow Force in 1942. One of the constructors was Max Loveless, who had been a radio technician with the ABC in Hobart. There is a replica of the set on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Note: an update on last weeks photos of Towers Hill. These were not of a tourist location but the now unused repeater site of VK7RNE on Tassies NE coast.
Also a reminder to embed your call-sign in the transmission. This is done in the software setup by enabling the FSK ID function.
Remember Ken VK7KRJs and Steve VK7OOs fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site that allows anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.
Also if you missed the net there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kens 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCs website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

April certainly seems to be this clubs month for historic happenings, commencing with ten years at the club rooms as mentioned in previous broadcasts. The next happening was well and truly beyond our control, three years ago the club rooms and just about everything else for that matter closed and all came to a grinding halt as protective measures were put in place to slow the spread of Covid-19. With this went the weekly coffee mornings as well as the Wednesday evening Technical sessions held at the club rooms. All club activities ceased…… until a knight in shining armor came along in the form of our very own Nic VK7WW or as we knew him then VK7BEE.
Nic enthusiastically suggested that he could run a weekly Wednesday night “Tech Net” session on 3.567MHz. The idea was greeted with instant approval, so with Nic hosting the on air Net and Paul VK7KPA managing Discord, they went live in April. It was a monumental success and within about a year had morphed to include a Test Net and CW Morse code training session. The rest, as you say is history, it has been successfully running for three years and approximately 150 evenings, it now also boasts a good mainland amateur participation, propagation allowing. Phil VK7ZPD now keeps Discord ticking away and also provides the off air audio stream. Rick VK7HBR along with Phil, also have been known to stand in as the Guest Host and Net controller when Nic has been unavailable. Finally thanks to all who have participated in the nets, whether on air, on Discord or as a short wave listener.
Did you know Australia entered two teams in the recent RSGB Commonwealth Contest? Well it turns out that congratulations are in order for both teams. Team 1 for coming 1st again and Team 2, with NTARC member Alan VK7BO, which came in 2nd this year. Quite an achievement against VE, G and other Northern Hemisphere Commonwealth Teams. Remember this was a CW only contest. Congratulations must go to Alan for helping wave the flag for Australia and Tasmanian amateurs.
While we are on the subject of competitions we still have a few members waiting on the next round of results to be posted by the John Moyle contest organisers, stay tuned and fingers crossed.
Mug Order - Those members who ordered a personalised club mug, they have arrived and are available for collection at Friday coffee mornings or at the Wednesday bi-weekly club Technical Nights. Special deliveries can be arranged for our far-flung members.
Because of the high number of enquiries we will be placing another order fairly soon, so if you would like one then please see André. So anyone else who wants one please specify what name is to be printed above the call sign. The final price will be about $12 depending on eventual quantity ordered.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The Club Technical night - The next session will be on Wednesday 19th of April and will commence at the usual time of 7.30 pm, running through to about 10.30 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.
Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. Why not pop in and join us for a cuppa there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.
The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday the 26th of April. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.
FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.
Thats all folks,
73 from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC.

DATV Experimenter's Night
https://fb.me/e/2JoFedbKt
Last Wednesday night Richard VK7ZBX took the audience through the VK4AMG kit from the City of Brisbane Radio Society. There are some limitations with the IC-9700 as there is only one PTT for all three bands. This kit is a breakout board that takes the CI-V from the rig and via an Arduino switches the relevant band. The project was shown by Richard VK7ZBX, thanks Richard.
http://brisbaneradiosociety.net/icom-ic9700-ptt-extender/
Justin VK7TW then outlined the crowd-source Project called the LiFePoweredPi. This RaspberryPi hat plugs into the 40 pin GPIO connector and provides an Uninterruptible Power Supply for a RaspberryPi. There are drivers to install to shutdown and startup the PSU.
Justin then demonstrated the functionality with the a 10inch touch screen running a RaspBerryPi 4 and pulled the power connector out of the Pi and everything continued to operate.
https://lifepo4wered.com/lifepo4wered-pi+.html
Justin and Richard then did a reminder of the recent upgrade of the VK7RAD repeater. There is a snazzy function on the VKlink software that provides the RSSI of the various voting receivers on a nice web interface.
http://hh.vk7.com.au:83/link.php?nodes=1727
https://www.vklink.com.au/status/
We then went through the latest DUBUS Magazine with and in depth look at the articles in the latest magazine.
Justin and Rex VK7MO then went into the two articles written by Rex.
We then took a look at the RAOTC - Latest OTN Magazine and an article called Recollections of High Altitude Thermonuclear Explosion - Starfish Prime by Paul Edwards VK7ZAL.
We finished with some reminders about future events and activities.
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=1971
This Wednesday night we take a look at an All-Sky Camera project, the latest AR Magazine and much more.
We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/
https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/
https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/
We also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.
