News from the North West
NWTARC Annual General meeting
The Annual General Meeting of NWTARC took place at 1330 hrs on Saturday 4th February 2023.
Presidents Shirley report:-
Shirley advised that she felt the club had had quite a successful year. We are a small club, she said, with a very small volunteer group.
What has been achieved by so few has been very impressive, with Paton Park being perhaps the greatest achievement. Unfortunately, the passing of members has had an effect on the club.
The mail-out sent to over 80 amateurs to assist with JOTA was a positive move.
The Club has been successful with its less formal atmosphere at meetings, and the social events were a great success.
Shirley is always reminding members it is the club members club. The committee is there to facilitate the club members ideas and instructions.
Treasurers report
The Treasurer advised that the club is in a very good position financially, with the Scout camp at Paton Parks upgrades being the major expense again this year.
The club has an ongoing offer to assist amateurs and Clubs who need financial assistance to maintain their repeaters in the North West.
Shirley had advised the committee at the last Executive meeting she would not be re-standing for President after her 4 terms as President.
Executive committee elected
President:- Ian VK7FICR
Vice President:- Ross VK7WP
Secretary:- Anne VK7BYL
Treasurer:- Eric VK7EV
Committee member:- Matt
Committee member:- Kirsty
Public Officer:- Dave VK7DC
The club thanked Shirley for her dedication to make the club more member friendly, with members involved in club decisions, and a more social club.
NWTARC Special general meeting
A special general meeting was held after the AGM on Saturday the 4th February 2023, to allow members to vote on amendments to rules 13, 14 and 16.
The amendments were passed unanimously.
North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club general meeting
The general meeting took place after the special meeting
The following non-committee members were elected:-
Repeater officers:- Matt, Dave VK7DC
Social Coordinator:- Kirsty
Training Officer:- Dave VK7DC
News Officer Eric:- VK7EV
The club welcomed new members, Matthew, Sarah, Brock and Martin, all very keen to obtain their amateur license, so it looks like training and AMC assessor, Dave, VK7DC, is going to be busy.
After the meeting, we got to chat and learn about our new members, who come from varied backgrounds.

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated
www.ntarc.net
We commence this week with a report on the NTARC Annual General Meeting held last Wednesday the 8th of February. The AGM saw an attendance of 23 voting members and 1 visitor.
Extensive reports by the President, Treasurer, each of the club activity leaders and the all-important Auditors statement were tabled and each well received by the membership, leaving all with the sense that 2022 had been another good year for NTARC, all the more so considering we are still in COVID times.
The elections saw the return of Idris VK7ZIR as President, Peter VK7KPC as Vice President, André VK7ZAB as Treasurer, Stefan VK7ZSB as Secretary and Roslyn (no call sign) as committee member.
Roger VK7ARN was again re-appointed as our Internal Auditor. A slight change this year saw Yvonne VK7FYMX relinquishing the Position of Public Officer and Stefan VK7ZSB accepting nomination for this position.
All the club activity coordinators were again appointed to their respective tasks; Tony VK7YBG as Northern Repeater Officer, David VK7JD continuing his role as Project Manager for Mt Arthur, with both being assisted by Paul VK7KPA and Andrew VK7DW as Assistant Repeater Officers.
Other club activity coordinators agreeing to continue in their roles for 2023 were Peter VK7PD as the Education Officer, Peter VK7KPC as our JOTA/JOTI Coordinator and Roger VK7ARN as our Safety Communications Coordinator.
So there you are folks, you now have the NTARC Committee and Coordinators for 2023. This information is now being prepared for inclusion on the club website by Webmaster Roger VK7ARN.
The business of the meeting proceeded at a good pace, with the agenda completed by 20:15 hrs. President Idris therefore brought matters to a close and after a brief break proceeded to open the February General Meeting which was completed by 20:40 hours.
This was followed by what else but supper, courtesy of the members bringing a plate and what we had hoped for, “preferably with some edible food on them”. Included is thanks to Bernie VK7BR who temporarily forwent his antenna maintenance activities and ventured into the “Dark Art” of cake baking. It turned out to be an excellent specimen, and iced no less.
Thanks go to our stalwart Ros for bringing all the offerings together into a heavily laden supper table that was enjoyed by all at the gathering following the meetings.
It was nice to see a couple of the newest members faces at the AGM. Probably not the most enthralling of times for them, but the after meeting chatter and get together was a good chance to meet other members. Hopefully this made up for it.
At the end of the night when leaving, the subject of the “Green Comet” flyby of Earth came up.
Evidently the coloured glow is due to “the diatomic carbon shed in its wake - a type of carbon molecule that absorbs light from the sun before emitting it as a fluorescent green tail”. Thanks Wiki.
Stuart VK7FEAT produced a pre-programmed URL from the site “Heavens-Above”. This gave a set of excellent directions, with constellation, star and planet locations with which to finally pinpoint the comet, unfortunately the sky was not on our side and the evening was decidedly overcast. Pity, as normally there is minimal light pollution in a northerly direction from the Club Rooms. Stuarts link is included in the text version as there is probably only a few more nights to catch sight of the comet on this pass. Alternatively, as it is orbiting the Sun in an elliptical orbit, just wait another fifty thousand or so years! HiHi
Seriously though, the “Heavens-Above” site is also an excellent resource for the location of objects like the International Space Station etc.
Text edition: C/2022 E3 ZTF directions to help location.

2023 Membership fees - Its that time of the year again and a big thank you to all those members who have paid their 2023 subs. Remember NTARCs 2023 membership fees are still just $40.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.
NTARC QSL Cards - A quick note from Andrew, VK7DW.
Thanks to Herman VK7HW for his continued support regarding QSL deliveries.
Following a recent delivery, the following call signs are waiting at the NTARC club rooms for collection.
VK7KPA and VK7LG
Thank you Andrew for the update.
And now for some blatant cross promotion between broadcast articles. If you get a chance check out the “Ice Flower” Slow Scan TV images broadcast by Colin VK7ZCF on the SSTV night. Whether they are natural or “seeded” by human intervention I dont know but they are pretty cool and worth a look. The link is also guaranteed “Cute Cat” image free.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday the 15th February. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. As Nic, VK7WW is unavailable, your host for the evening is to be announced.
Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. We currently have a couple of QSL cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in and check the box and join us for a cuppa and chat.
The Club Technical night - Wednesday 22nd of February. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until late.
FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.
Thats all folks,
73 from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC.

Presentation Night Wrap-Up - My Time at Casey Station
Last Wednesday night we had a fantastic talk by Warren VK7WN/VK0WN about his time at Casey Station over the Winter of 2022.
Warren started by outlining the expedited recruitment process as the Division was looking for a communications officer. Warren went through all the checks successfully and was very quickly on a 319 aircraft for a 4.5 hour flight.
Warren was one of 30 people to cover the Winter for a nine month stint at Casey coming back at the end of November 2022 and getting used to paying for goods and meals…hihi.
Warren talked about the RAAF C-17 aircraft coming in to pick the expeditioners up and the trip back to Hobart.
Warren related that they had to get some critical spares for machinery that grooms the aircraft and these were airdropped by the RAAF with one of the parachute releases not working and the pallet of the material was being dragged by the extreme wind and being caught by one of the tractors.
The 319 requires 3.3km of runway whereas the C-17 can land and take-off with half that distance.
Warren talked about the runway crew and the schedule of preparing the runway along with the aircraft communications on airband around 120MHz and the protocol involved in the communications.
Warren was luck to get a look at the cockpit of the C-17 aircraft on his way back by swapping some historic stickers of the first 319 flight into Antarctica.
The RAAF woman on the flight recognised Warrens voice as the voice of VNJ Casey.
Warren then went into the amateur radio operations at Casey Station - the Hobby Hut was employed and the inverted V and 7300 Transceiver. There was a fair bit of local QRM from the Station and settled on 20m and on weekends the noise dropped.
Warren made contacts at lunch time and after work chores were completed. Warren made 600 contacts with half to VK and the remaining to 40 countries.
Warren described a typical day starting with his monster coffee and printing the newspapers for expeditioners. Warren went through the rostered duties that all expeditioners are required to undertake.
Warren talked about an interesting RF interference issue with the caterpillar tractors that were being used for the ice core transverse. The satellite dish building needs constant maintenance and there was an outage on the ANZAC Day weekend that Warren talked about.
There were IT duties to fulfill - Warren then talked about the challenges of getting a coax to the outside in these significantly insulated buildings.
Warren then talked about going to the old Wilkes Station and there is a building that expeditioners can go to with a wood heater and pizza making facilities. In fact there is a tradition to go to Wilkes and make a Pizza and the noise floor was SOOOO low!
There is plenty of wood to be found on an Antarctic Base - scraps from everything!
Warren then talked about the power generation and fuel arrangements at the base with over one million litres of fuel being stored at base.
There is always a good collection of movies held at the base via internet, hard disks, USB keys, etc. The broadband is about 9MBits/s so a little slow and applications like WhatsApp were being used to talk between expeditioners and families.
A huge thank you to Warren for the presentation.
