Contest News
Summer VHF/UHF and above Field Day

Donâ€Öt forget the Summer session of the VHF/UHF field day is this weekend - Saturday 14 0100 UTC (12 Noon Local) through 0059 UTC (1159 local) on Sunday 15 January. Why not come on and give out a few contacts from home, or even head out portable as the weather is looking promising.

There are as always many different categories that you can participate in. There is the single band section that allows use of any one band, the popular 4 band section that covers the relatively popular bands of 6M, 2M, 70cm and 23cm. Then there is the open section that covers all the bands above 6M up to 133 GHz. There are the sections for portable stations to operate for either 8 hours or 24 hours, sections for home stations to operate for 8 hours or 24 hours, or become a rover for either 8 hours or 24. There are also a section for portable multi operators so why not go portable with a mate or 2.

The usual frequencies will be in use around VK7. Try listening on 52.525 MHz, 146.500 MHz, 439.000 MHz and 1296.150 MHz as well as 2403.150 MHz, 3398.150 MHz and 10,368.150 MHz all on FM. Of course as the summer DX stars may align and bands will be opening up then it would pay to check the usual call frequencies. These are 50.110 MHz, 144.100 MHz, 432.100 MHz and 1296.100 all on USB. Please have a tune around as there may be stations further up the band, you just never know who you may hear and work!

As usual you will need to know your 6 digit maidenhead grid square locator. There are many resources to find this either phone apps or use of online mapping tools.

The choice of logging is still the VKCL program as the rules haven't changed at all and It does seem to tick all the boxes. There are others as well. If you are having issues with logging software please reach out to me and I will be happy to assist where I can. As is usual please take care and aim to log accurately.. donâ€Öt be caught out with the wrong mode or band and loose valuable contacts. Remember with VKCL FM contacts will show up green.. default is SSB, so make each contact count. Also ensure that your clock in your PC is set accurately so all the contacts will tally once the logs are all checked.

Once the contest is over, run an eye over your log to eliminate any glaring typos, and then submit your log to the address below. Then it's done and you canâ€Öt forget 😊

Most importantly have a great time!

Hope to hear you on the higher bands

Microwave News
23cm Net continued activities.

For some time now the greater Hobart spectrum around 1296.150 MHz had been busy with many signals for the weekly 23cm net. We continue to have a median call back number of 16 and lately the numbers have increased and last Sunday we had 20 people call in.

We have many operators and have on previous nets had 23 on 23. The equipment is varied and there are many of the SG-Lab transverters, some with the excellent SG-Lab 25W amp with inbuilt preamp, along with the usual suspects from Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood.

Antennas mainly consist of the very successful Yagi kits from REAST, the couple of build days and the odd few commercial options from Ebay and others. There is also a very successful North South contact session after the normal net on Q65-60B where there are contacts made between some stations.

It is very pleasing to see the interest and participation continuing from some year ago when Rex VK7MO decided to start the net.

Statewide News
Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another great net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – PD, ZGK, ZAB, ZBX and ZCF all sharing fourteen photos.

There were various subjects like:

A group shot of attendees at a Hamfest at Campbell Town in the 1960s – do you recognize any faces?

An indoor amateur meeting at Ross in 2004

    Airplane cockpit with familiar faces

An amazing mural on the side of a multi-story building

    A northern Tasmanian railway bridge

EME satellite dish setup at night and sighting scope cross hairs aimed at the moon ready for a bounce

Lots of tree carvings depicting colonial maritime scenes

Remember Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site that allows anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be RF linked to VK7RJG by using a CTCSS tone of 141.3Hz. We get underway from around 7:30pm.

Microwave Milestone
Nine on 9cm in VK7.

Well, we finally did it! Yes, we were finally able to assemble 9 amateurs into the one space of the spectrum at the same time. This time it was pretty special as they where all assembled on 3398.150 MHz on FM and so this qualified us for 9 on 9.

We have been steadily building our numbers on this band. All of the current operators are using the SG-Lab transverter running the native 2W into the large grid pack antenna courtesy of Heath VK3TWO from Spooktech.

All are horizontally polarized and we are all pointing at the wonderfully suited and nature provided Mt Wellington. Signals are remarkably good considering the distances and terrains as not everybody can see the mountain. Operators on the day were vk7s TW, ZBX, QP, OO, BJ, BW, ZMS, GN and KAJ.

There is at least one more operator in the South, and 2 operators in the North. Congratulations to all, much work has gone into integrating and fine tuning these setups. We look forward to welcoming more people onto 9cm, remember it's another band for contesting. See you on 9cm soon.

With the New Year came the first TestNet and TechNet session on Wednesday night, it was once again hosted by Nic VK7WW as VK7TAZ net controller on behalf of the club, with Phil VK7ZPD on the Discord controls and live off air audio distribution.

I was once again mobile at the time and like last time I was going to listen in using Discord through the car stereo via my phone. But my phone had other ideas, trust me this is not a problem with Philâ€Ös expertise in Discord setup but my dodgy phone. I ended up logging onto the club SDR through the internet this time and listening via the car stereo. Using Discord or SDR audio is actually pretty good when mobile as you hear all sides of the net conversations with the added bonus of not having to have an 80 m antenna on the car. Even then no guarantee of hearing all sides.

There were plenty of “Happy New Year†and festive season updates along with the usual net chatter.

The excellent thing about this net is the wide ranging technical information, questions, and project updates, with the ability to show additional information and links via the Discord channel. This type of technically oriented net is certainly refreshing and an excellent melting pot of ideas which in turn promotes much discussion.

The on air contingent consisted of Nic, Phil, Rick VK7HBR, Peter VK7ALB and Ross VK7ALH. As I was driving at the time I am relying on my memory, therefore I am sorry if any participants are missed or I have muddled anyoneâ€Ös callsign. All in all an enthusiastic start to the New Year.

Friday also saw the first coffee morning for the year, with a more than expected turn out, almost standing room only. Thanks to Ros for once again opening up and organising the club room in readiness. As expected the New Year break was the initial topic of conversation covering happenings and some new amateur radio component additions, which will no doubt surface in the ensuing Technical nights. The normal mid-day cessation certainly didnâ€Öt hold as the front door was finally locked sometime after 1 pm. A pleasant relaxing start to the New Year Friday sessions.

Saturday, with a bit of luck, should have seen the first club General Meeting for the year held. More meeting information to follow in the next broadcast. Hopefully the club radio room was used by somebody wanting to complete “just one more†contact before or after the meeting. Good luck to all taking part in the Summer VHF/UHF and above Contest action. Is this the yearly beginning of another round of previously discussed “Certificate Envy HiHi.

2023 Membership fees - Itâ€Ös that time of the year again and a big thank you to all those members who have paid their 2023 subs. Sorry to members that didnâ€Öt receive the pre-Christmas mail out as it seems Gmail, for whatever reason, randomly failed to send to all addresses in some mail out lists. It also failed to notify the sender that it just didnâ€Öt feel like sending some of the e-mails! The next wave of renewal payments is once again keeping our Treasurer busy writing up receipts. Thank you for your patience and understanding. NTARCâ€Ös 2023 membership fees are still just $40.00 for a Full voting member and $5 additional for each Family member that the voting member wishes to add to his or her primary membership.

Annual General Meeting - Members are reminded that the NTARC AGM will take place on Wednesday the 8th of February at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street, Rocherlea, commencing at 7.30pm (19:30). All current office holder and committee positions fall vacant at the AGM. Nominations for each office bearer and the Committee Member are invited and should be made in writing to the Secretary, along with the signatures of the Nominator, Seconder and that of the member nominated. Nominations will also be required for the positions of Internal Auditor and Public Officer.

Please note for your convenience there is a nomination form available on the NTARC website,

www.ntarc.net

and printed forms are also available at the club room. Please ensure that the completed nomination form is returned by “Close of Business†on the 2nd of February 2023, either in person or at the following mail address: The Secretary, NTARC Inc. PO Box 275 Launceston Tas 7250.

As usual, the AGM will be followed by a General Meeting. More details on that meetingâ€Ös topic will be given closer to the date.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Club Technical night - Wednesday 18th of January. Held at the NTARC Club rooms, 7.30pm until late.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. We currently have a couple of QSL cards awaiting collection, so why not pop in, check the QSL box and join us for a cuppa and chat.

The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday 25th January. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.

Annual General Meeting - Wednesday the 8th February. Members are reminded that the NTARC AGM will take place at the NTARC Club Rooms, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street, Rocherlea, commencing at 7.30pm (19:30). February General Meeting to follow the AGM.

FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Thatâ€Ös all folks,

73 and a Happy New Year from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/2JoFedbKt

We started the night with the DMR changes happening in VK with Harry VK7HXT. This is all about making the VK-DMR network simpler and more flexible commences 9th January 2023. There are approximately 50 Talk Groups (TGs) on the VK-DMR network. This is confusing for new users and makes radio programming a complex business. Many of the TGs are not used. There are also a lot of static (always on) TGs on TS2 – 505, and the state/territory based 380x series. Experience has proven that multiple static TGs do not work well together on the same time slot. So, we have decided to simplify network operation using a two-phase process.

Phase one took effect from 9th January 2023. All TGs will become User Activated (UA), apart from 5 on TS1 and 505 on TS2. The TG380x TGs on TS2 will no longer be State/Territory specific. As the 380x TGs will be UA, any 380x TG may be used to link any two or more repeaters together on TS2. As with all UA channels, the repeaters need to be keyed up (“kerchunkedâ€) on the appropriate 380x TG. TG505 will not change – it will remain static and will continue as the network calling channel. The parrot on TG9990, all the TGs on TS1 and the VK-DMR net on TG5 will not change. Your radio will continue to work as is without reprogramming. Phase 1 will run for one month.

Phase two will take effect from 9th February 2023 - under Phase two, the network will be reconfigured:

TS1 - TG5 Broadcasts - Tactical channels 3801-3808 - 9 (no change).

TS2 - 505 Calling and the Tuesday evening net and 9990 Parrot (no change)

All TS1 TGs will be User Activated. TG505 on TS2 will be the only static TG.

These will require a re-programming of the Codeplug as TimeSlots are swapping.

These changes will simplify network operation/radio programming and improve network flexibility.

For more information take a look at the website on the email edition of this broadcast. https://vkdmr.com/making-the-vkdmr-network-simpler-and-more-flexible/

Richard VK7ZBX then gave us an update on his Earth Moon Earth activities.

We announced that we had 9 on 9cm on Sunday - congratulations to all involved. We reminded everyone of the VHF and Above Field Day on Saturday to Sunday.

We then invited Jim VK7JDZ our recent Foundation Licencee who did a walk to Florentine Peak walk and made his first contacts using a hand-held into VK7RAF Mt Faulkner.

We took a quick look at the latest DUBUS Magazine and finished with a look at the 15-40M Magnetic Loop Progress.

We are running throughout the holiday period and this week we have DUBUS Magazine, more on the Mag loop project and 160m short Vertical testing and much more.

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

We go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC. We also stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
