Welcome to the VK7 Amateur Radio News and this was first broadcast on Sunday the 30th October 2022. At the mike of VK7WI this week is Mike, VK7FB.
On Sunday this broadcast goes out on repeaters all over VK7 and on digital radio - DMR Talk Group 5 and D-Star Reflector 91C by Clayton VK7ZCR.

Silent Key -
Bill Hilder VK7HC (SK)
It is with great sadness that I advise that Bill "Clarrie" Hilder VK7HC became a Silent Key on 14 October.
Clarrie was a long member of the WIA and a very dedicated WIA examiner in the 90's assisting many new hams get through their licence.
Clarrie was a very keen CW operator with whom I had the pleasure of operating many JOTAs with in the 90's.
Clarrie was in his 82nd year.
Sincere condolences to his family.

Jamboree on the Air
JOTA Report
As promised last week, here is a report on JOTA/JOTI 2022.
Participation numbers were down this year, mainly due to the event falling on the last weekend of the school holidays. However there were 6 activations that I know of.
As reported last week Stations were activated at Burnie and Paton Park, inland from Ulverstone.
About 25 scout members attended Burnie and 17 youth members were recorded at Paton Park.
Thanks to the NWTARC members mentioned last week and also Eric VK7EV who did a lot of pre-event work but could not attend on the day.
Michael VK7MRS reported that Huon District had 25 attendees.
It was a 100% Youth run station with lots of activities to rotate through.
Awesome & inspiring atmosphere, both days, plus absolutely wonderful to see the Radio Patrol excelling in the Youth Led / Adult supervised program.
Small turn out at the Lea. 3 groups. 8 cubs,Scouts & Joeys. Total. 2 Parents stayed, a bonus. They communicated using DMR digital radio system. No HF or other bands as the Groups were making a day trip only. Thanks to Noel VK7FLCN and Danny VK7HDM
As reported by Randall VK7VWK last week, the turnout at the Domain was also small with 5 youth members plus some leaders attending.
The Station at Rocherlea in Launceston had 77 attend including 7 from St Helens and19 Guides. The JOTI operation was supervised by the Matthew Brady Venturers who also monitored the Skype, robot and electronic kits activity. Skype contacts were made with New Zealand, Canada, Vietnam and Indonesia to name a few. No idea how many countries contacted via Scoutlink. 2 metre Fox hunting and morse code again popular. Radio contacts using digital radio, echolink and VHF to Paton Park and Hobart. Thanks to NTARC members Andre VK7ZAB, Stefan VK7ZSB, Tony VK7YBG, Stuart VK7FEAT, Ian VK7IG, Brendan VK7VIP, Kevin VK7KJL, Idris VK7ZIR, Tony VK7ZTT and Stuart VK7ES who were on site at various times over the weekend. Also thanks to Lewis VK7IT, Brendan and Shirley VK7HSC who also worked the site from home.
Thank you to all operators who were on air over the weekend and talking to scout/guide stations anywhere. The event cannot run without you and I hope that we can get a better youth attendance number next year.

This gives the organisers time to get lanyards, showbags and organisation in place to give attendees a great experience at the Conference and expo.
REAST will have a table available for members to sell the odds and ends you may have lying around the shack at the expo on Sunday. You will need to attend the expo in person to utilize this. Please label your equipment appropriately and see Larry VK7WLH who is arranging this on the day.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Another great night that saw the following participants VK7s – ZAB, ZSB, ZMS, PD, ZCF, ZIR and KPC all sharing nearly thirty photos.
There were varies subjects like:
the continuing transport theme which including some buses converted to motor homes. And as seen around Tasmania a restored “1947 Clipper” and a large bus pulling a trailer with a 4 wheel drive aboard.

for equipment there was a rack of servers, rack of beacon transmitters at VK7RAE Don Heads and associated antenna array, a stack of transceivers setup for a field-day and nice looking RF switcher.

Ken, VK7KRJs fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site has had a few test transmissions during the week. Remember anyone can send pictures at anytime and check them on the page almost immediately.
A reminder in Southern Tasmania, VK7RAF (146.650 -600kHz) can be used both locally and linked to VK7RJG by using different CTCSS tones. 123Hz for local Southern operation and 141.3Hz for linking RAF to VK7RJG (438.55 -7MHz).

Contest News
WIA Spring VHF/UHF Field Day
It's time to get ready for the WIA Spring VHF/UHF field day. This year it will be on from 01:00 UTC Saturday 26 through till 00:59 UTC Sunday 27 November 2022.
There are a number of sections and then sub sections so there is something for everybody. Broadly speaking there are two main streams of participants, those that are happy to pack up a fair bit of their shack, associated bits and bobs, then reassemble it in some remote spot, discover they have forgot to pack "something", brave or enjoy the weather and conditions, supply power, make some contacts then do the reverse and pack it all up take it home, and those that are not quite that mad and operate from the comfort of their shack. Then there are the Rovers. They are special individuals as they move about and repeat the portable things all over the place.
It's a great day of fun and there will be many people out and about so why not allocate some time to come on and exchange some numbers that weekend. You can rework stations after 2 hours. The usual logging programs support the contest and you will need to determine your 6 digit maidenhead square locator from your operating location and there are many smartphone apps to help obtain this.

North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club Meeting
The next club meeting will commence at 1.30pm on the 3rd December at our usual venue, the Scout hall, 73 Alexandra Road, Ulverstone.
Afternoon tea will also be held and members are encouraged to bring items for show & tell, and club rooms are open until 6pm for members to socialise.
A small plate of afternoon tea would be appreciated and we have single packaged Tea, Coffee and Sugar and disposable cups for members and guests. Visitors are most welcome to attend.
If you have any cold or flu symptoms , or are unwell , or been in contact with a confirmed COVID case, then please do not attend the meeting.

Its the end of October and things have finally quietened down, therefore this is one of those famine weeks with only a few new items and updates. After looking through the items to mention, it became clear that they all have one thing in common, it is doing what amateurs do best, helping each other and helping the community. From the amateur assistance in Peter VK7KPCs JOTA / JOTI Scouting update this week through to what happened after last weeks broadcast….
Before the dust had settled on last Sundays broadcast, I had received an e-mail about the subject of FM Crystal sets that was just mentioned in the broadcast. Ric VK7RO had taken “pity” on us and sent through information and an internet link to one that he had built many, many years earlier. Within the next couple of days Ric had located the said FM quadrature detector crystal set, most likely removed a huge layer of dust from it, taken it around to a fellow amateur, Dave VK7DM, completed some signal generator testing and was packaging it up ready to go North. Wow Ric, thats impressive! It will be collected next weekend when we attend the Ham Convention & Expo. And guess what? It will be on the table at the club rooms for the next Technical night. No doubt generating discussions. Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm Ric.
Special thank you to Phil VK7ZPD, for standing in as Net Host for the Test Net and TechNet sessions last Wednesday night. Nic VK7WW, was unavailable so Phil took the reins and the sessions went ahead as planned. I must say Phil makes an excellent stand-in for Nic, thank you Phil.
Equine Endurance event - The State Championships at Santarena Park, Scottsdale on the 18th & 19th of November is coming up rapidly. This is a request for additional crew members to help us handle this twenty four hour event starting at midnight. Please advise if you are able to assist for any length of time by emailing Roger, VK7ARN or catch up with the Secretary at a Coffee Morning or Tech Session.
Tassie Ham Expo – Thanks to all club members that attended the Technical Nights and Coffee Mornings, your monetary contributions have gone towards the purchase of multiple useful small items that have been combined together into three Shack Packs which are suitable for an amateurs shack. These are going to the Tassie Ham Conference / Expo next weekend, where they will be added to the already excellent pool of raffle prizes. Remember, Tassie Ham Expo is next weekend, you cant wait any longer to register, if you have been thinking of going down to Hobart, be quick, go on line and register now!

We started the night with a reminder that ICOM has done some recent new firmware and software releases - V1.20 - Programming Software and V1.31 of firmware for IC-705.
We then did a review of the new power standards for the USB-C Power Adapters. USB-C is a 24 pin rotationally symmetrical connector that can support a two lane operation giving 10 and 20 Gbit/s (~1.2 and 2.5 GB/s).
We looked at the 24 pins of the USB-C standard and the pin usage
There are many different modes that USB C can be in and we went through each mode. There is even an audio adapter accessory Mode where all digital signals are stopped and analogue signals can be feed via the connector.
For equipment that is compliant it can request up to 2 A at 5 V and optionally up to 3 A or 5 A at either 12 V (36 W or 60 W) or up to 20 V (60 W or 100 W) depending on what the plug pack can deliver.
We also went through the QC or Qualcomm quick Charge standard.
We then looked into some ancient Sound Triggers that Justin VK7TW built.
The first was a 555 timer design from Practical Electronics and Justin explained the operation. Justin showed some of the photos he did with the sound triggers.
Justin then showed his upgraded design using an 8748 microcontroller which gave down to 1 microsecond control and Justin demonstrated the operation. Justin then showed some photos about blowing up capacitors in the backyard.
Justin finished the segment with a picture of him shaking hands with Sir Mark Oliphant at the 1980s High Schools Science Prize in South Australia. This was when Justin built a Linear Induction Motor for the schools prize and won a prize!
