First let me appoligize to you all for the slight lateness of this issue.
I like to have this to you on the 15th of each month but I have been under
the weather for the last few days and am just now getting my writing back
on track. I just love winter, don't you?
I hope that all of you had a great holiday season. Things were kind of
quiet in this household. No relatives visited at all which was a great
relief from previous holiday seasons. I hope you got what you wanted from
Santa.
The big news of the past month was the Andaman and Nicobar Island
DXpedition of VU4RBI/VU4NRO. They were active soon after the December RTTY
Gazette was emailed and they were quite active on CW, SSB and PSK. I have
not heard of any RTTY activity from the group but their DXpedition
operations ceased with the devistating tsunami that swept the islands on
December 26. The group immediately switched to a emergency communications
mode and have been very active handling heath and welfare traffic into and
out of the islands. There is more about their operations on the ARRL
website at http://www.arrl.org
The RTTY Contest season is now in full swing. We have just completed one
of the major contests this past weekend with the ARRL RTTY Roundup. I
could not participate but seeing some of the scores posted to the 3830 and
RTTY list indicate that I probably missed a good one this year. Well
sometimes family obligations get in the way and this is only a hobby right?
I am still amazed at the number of people who decide to make some major
contest software change the night before the contest. It never fails that
there is a large number of messages posted to the RTTY and Writelog (plus
other) maillists frantically looking for a fix to some problem that has
popped up after a upgrade or other software change. I often wonder how
those folks make out in the contest. My rule here is to never upgrade a
working system in the shack if I am within 2 weeks of a contest unless I do
it early and test it completely. I am always prepared to go back to a older
version if problems arise.
I am in the process of tearing down the shack, moving it into a smaller
room upstairs. The basement was ok but not exactly where I want all my
equipment with all the dust down there. It sure is a mess right now.
There is a new upgrade to Writelog out now. Version 10.52F is avaliable at
www.writelog.com
If you know of any new updates to digital software please let me know so I
can put the info in the RTTY Gazette. I generally do not follow the
happenings in the other digital modes so I am relying on you, the reader,
to let me know if you have anything of interest.
