RTTY Gazette - November 2004
By Thom WI8W
Fall is in full swing, Winter is just around the corner and so is the RTTY
contest season. So far we have had the CQ-RJ WW RTTY DX Contest and
upcoming is the WAE this weekend and the TARA Melee in early December. The
RTTY Contest season begins with full fury on January 1.
First off I want to take the space here to say goodbye to a pioneer of RTTY.
Art, K2ENT became a Silent Key on November 1 of a heart attack. According to
the note posted on the RTTY list he died instantly and did not suffer at all.
Rest in Peace Art. You will be greatly missed.
Last issue I asked if there was any interest in seeing articles about other
digital modes. I only heard from one subscriber on the subject and his main
statement was "do not change the name". So, The name will not change. It
will still be the same old RTTY Gazette. We will discuss other digital modes
here but only if I get some submissions from subscribers that know more
about them than I do. So let me have your articles on RTTY, PSK, CW, Pactor,
Amtor or what have you.
I have just had a terrible time with computers in the last month. I just
love hardware that does not work as advertized or that decide to fail for
no apparent reason. Fortunately the only computer not affected was my HP
laptop on which I write and mail the RTTY Gazette. My advice to you all
that use computers...backup, backup and backup some more.
Many received some very nice certificates for winning their sections/states
in the 2004 NAQP RTTY Contest held last July. Congratulations go to Don K0FX,
Rick W4UEF, Jerry NO2T, Jack W7LD, Larry W0ETC and yours truly Thom WI8W.
I am sure there are many more certificates we do not know about at this
time. By the way Patrick W7TMT posted belated thanks for his January 2004
NAQP RTTY Certificate...it seems Patrick was in Alaska until recently.
Don AA5AU, has released the latest edition of his RTTY Callsign Database.
You can download the zipped file from:
http://rttycontesting.com/aa5au_rtty041103.zip.
The database contains 5200 callsigns from the DK3VN RTTY World Ranking List
plus any callsign that show up in at least 3 times in Cabrillo Logs received
by Don up to October 2004. Don says that in 2005 he will no longer maintain
the larger callsign database (containing some 24000 callsigns) because he
suspects that there are many bad and busted callsigns in that database.
Jim AD1C, the moderator and owner of the RTTY List, has asked subscribers to
the RTTY list not to use the words "hi" or "help" in the subject lines of
posts to the list. Apparently Jim gets a lot of spam hitting the reflector
and his filters are set to nail email with those words in the subject line.
Meaningful subject lines will also result in a better response to your
comments and/or questions.
160 Meter RTTY has surfaced once again with the coming darkness and winter
conditions. Anyone want to set up a night and time each week for us to get
together? Let me know.
You also might let me know if you have any designs for a 160 meter antenna
that is easy to build and will fit in my very small backyard. I can barely
fit in a full size dipole for 80 meters at this time and actually one end of
that antenna is in the front yard. thanks

Rtty resources. I have received a few emails asking for RTY sites on the
Internet. Well I guess I waould say go to Google and type in RTTY and click
the Search Google button. The last time I did this there were at least 10
pages of links. I will attempt to highlight some of them here. I will start
with my favorite sites.
If you have some favorites not listed here let me know for future issues. I
am planning on a Web Site of the Month Feature.
RTTY History: http://www/rtty.com
This site covers just about everything you would ever want to know about the
early days of RTTY.
Getting Involved with RTTY: http://www.aa5au.com/rtty.html
Don AA5AU provides this site which is loaded with information on getting
started with RTTY using your shack computer. This is the site I first
visited when I got back into RTTY.
Need a RTTY Interface for your computer? http://www.w5bbr.com/soundbd.html
RTTY Contesting: http://www.writelog.com
If you run a "Windows" machine this is probably the best software for RTTY
Contesting. It is the only thing used in my shack. When combined with the
MMTTY engine it is simply the best in my opinion. By the way "Windows" is a
registered trademark of the Microsoft Company. Just to keep it legal folks.
http://www.rttycontesting.com
Another site by Don AA5AU covers using Writelog in RTTY Contesting.
http://www.k9jy.com/
Another excellent site provided by Scott K9JY. This site includes
configuration info for many of the popular radios. Even the setup I use on
my Yeasu FT-920 is in there.
http://www.ad1c.com/HamRadio/rtty.htm
Jim, AD1C, is the owner/moderator of the RTTY Mail List. This site has some
interesting stuff.
The sites listed above should keep you plenty occupied until I present more
next Month.
