RTTY Gazette - October 2004

Jim has decided that this fledgling writer/editor and publisher should go
solo this month. Jim will be back one final time next month. Here we go
folks.

You know, sometimes things just work against you no matter how hard you
try. I have lost 2 hard drives in my primary station computer in as many
weeks. Now I am using my laptop which is much better than any desktop I
have ever built. We will see how it goes when I build yet another desktop
computer this weekend.

We are seeing some signs of winter here in West Michigan. The daylight is
shorter, The frost has already appeared, I am even seeing some of the
familiar winter constellations in the early morning skies. Venus has
really been beautiful in the Eastern sky this week. But I really know
that winter is approaching when I get my annual bout of a really nasty
sinus infection. It happens every year, usually in October.

I received several new subscribers since the last issue and I want to say
welcome to those new members. I hope that what you have subscribed to
will be what you expect.

I had several members send me info that is included here.

I also want to appologize for the BCC issue I have been dealing with.
There was a setting in the software I use to email the Gazette that seemed
to be hidden that allowed the email addresses to be shown under BCC. I
have found and reset that setting and hopefully now all your email
addresses will be hidden under BCC.

In my recent computyer problems I know I had a email from someone but I
lost it. Hopefully what I have here is the point this person wanted to
put across. I do appologize to that individual for not remembering who he
was. His email said something like this: "I remember when the RTTY Gazette
covered all the digital modes, and now I see that the main focus is once
again primarily RTTY. Can we return to a focus of covering all the
digital modes? Maybe we could call it the Digital Gazette."

Now that got me to thinking...why not. A quick flurry of emails to my
Gazette mentor, Jim and we both think this is a idea that could work. I,
myself not being all that familiar with any digital modes except CW, RTTY
and a little PSK, I am asking you for your input. Do you think this is a
good idea? Do you have any knowledge or skills with a particular digital
mode that you would like to share? Let me know...send me a email to
digitalgazette@wi8w.org with your thoughts and suggestions. Your
participation is what will make this a reality. Who knows, maybe a name
change for the RTTY Gazette is in the works.

Mike, AB7RU, sent a nice note asking if there any other operators out
there using Clover. Mike writes:
"Have had several good contacts on clover lately. - W6IWR, WB4M, VE3BEE
(on 40 meters), VE3GNN (not a very long contact but we did link!)
Hopefully other hams will hear the clover chirps and decide to blow the
dust and cobwebs off their clover modems."

Well said Mike, let us know if you have any further success.

Steve, XE1UFO, also known as KA5SUT sent this along:
"Our local ham club (and I) will be participating in supporting a local
Boy Scout camp with the Jamboree on the Air on Saturday October 16th. (We
are not able on Sunday 17th.) But of COURSE I will be using my
SG2020ADSP2!!"

"Also, I got the wild idea of making up some brochures to promote
the club and ham radio in general with the kids. Any ideas would be
appreciated."

"Also, maybe YOU, dear ham, would like to help out at a near-by
Scout troop? I think it would be a great way to let these kids know
about ham radio!"

"For official details on the Jamboree on the Air:
http://www.scout.org/wse/jota.shtml "

Steve also adds that CW will be the primary mode.

My belief is that CW is the most simple of digital modes. I have
particppated in the past at several Jamborees and it is a lot of fun
showing the kids just what ham radio is all about. If there is a event in
your area please volunteer.

W6JOX chimes in with a interesting observation:

"My name is Chuck and my call is W6JOX. I have been on RTTY since early
1953 and is almost the only operation that I do."

"I have a pet peeve that new comers do not realize how simple it is to
start and finish all communications with a line feed and return. Just
common courtesy. Not only that but the chance of losing info into a long
line of nothing is reduced. Makes it also easier for the newer software
operations to pick up a call with out a half line of gibberish."

"Just an old codgers observation." 73 de Chuck

Good point Chuck, with all the interference out there, this is something
we all may want to consider.

There are a couple of websites I want to mention that may be of value to
RTTY operators.

>From Don AA5AU, you might want to check out his websites at
http://www.aa5au.com/rtty.html and his
rtty contesting site at

www.rttycontesting,.com. Both sites are full of information about RTTY.

Also for those contesters using Writelog for Windows contesting software
not only does AA5AU's contesting site have info but so does a site by
Scot, K9JY. The site covers all modes using this software with a really
good section on using it for RTTY.

Well that is just about all for this issue. The monthly announcements are
below. Till next month.....

I intend on making it a regular feature to include upcoming DX and
DXpedition news. I plan to only include announcements that indicate that
some digital modes (RTTY,PSK etc.) will be used during the operation.
Digital contests will also be included in the announcements.
