Hi Eldred and other possible Balloonists !

Perhaps before you get too carried away with such things as length of
wire, size of balloon, swr etc, I think you should experiment with just
using a balloon (party type) tethered with a length of cotton thread. The
balloon will lift this quite easily.

The problem you will immediately run into is that with even the slightest
hint of air movement the tether will tend to become almost horizontal to
the ground, the balloon being taken downwind. The height of the balloon
above ground varies wildly also and the more balloons you use the worse
the effect is ! (higher "windage" area).

You could elect to use it after 2100 or before 0400 on a cold night ! Not
very attractive ?

I went through all this experimenting during WW2, when we (myself and a
couple of pals) were playing around with spark transmitters (using Ford
Model T ignition coils} on the Medium Waves. Hi !

Luckily at that time we had a barrage balloon unit stationed on the field
at the rear of our house and a couple of the RAF guys were billetted with
my family. So with a little persuasion we were able to scrounge a quick
squirt of hydrogen for our experiments. Of course suitable "balloons" were
available even in wartime, being only fourteen at the time (1942) we
didn't have any other use for them in those days.

But hey,I won't bore you all to tears ! If you're realy interested in how
we overcame the problem, drop me a packet. Try the cotton thread first !

 Cheers
