Comment (translated by Eddi, DK3UZ):

In the 8th OQRPC the K2 rushed from almost zero to 3rd place.
The next event saw it in 2nd place, and almost everyone expected it to be in
the top position after the 10th OQRPC.
Seems its breath-taking triumphal march was halted and topped by the FT-817,
a radio which wasn't there one year ago, and which now effectively stirs
the QRP scene.

There is no doubt Yeasu showed a lucky hand when it came to marketing
their new product. A versatile piece of equipment with lots of strengths and
a few weaknesses (poor dynamic range, no QSK, high power consumption, DK3UZ).
But at least a pure <5w QRP rig. THE solution for /p and holiday operations,
were size and weight are of prime importance.
Good looks, professional design, almost everyone wants one.

Somehow also a kind of satisfaction to QRP protagonists, that now one
of the big "global players" tackled QRP, a field formerly left to small
enterprises, in such a dedicated and impressive way. Some, who wouldn't
have dreamed of it earlier, now change their mind and give QRP a try.

On the other hand some OM will stop to do exactly what DL-QRP-AG
and qrpcc intend to promote: to deal with QRP in a creative way,
especially to build things by themselves.

So there are also mixed feelings concerning the FT-817's success.
Yet, with a share of just over 10% it is to early to speak about monotony,
the score table remains congenially diverse and colourful.
And the share of homebrew equipment stays at roughly 50%.

May it continue to be like this.

73/2 "Hal", Hartmut, DJ7ST (tks to Eddi!)
