Subject: [psk31] Linux

Greetings,

I am new to the list and wanting to get going on PSK31.

I run Linux, RedHat 6.2 kernel 2.2.14-5 and was wondering
what those of you running Linux use for a sound card?
Does anyone use a Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 PCI?

I want to use a sound card that is already supported by
kernel 2.2.14-5 so I don't have to recompile the kernel.
I use my home computer to support my work which requires
I test software using RedHat 6.2 and the 2.2.14-5 kernel.

I am sure this question has been asked a number of times.
I looked for a hardware list but found none.

My immediate goal is to get my station in San Antonio,
Texas going and and one near corpus Christi, Texas along
the Texas Gulf Coast. We are in hurricane season and I
believe that a mode like PSK31 will server us MUCH better
that AMTOR or CW. There are times when even CW is
marginal and maintaining communications with the Texas Gulf
Coast stations is mandatory to coordinate evacuation and
rescue and recovery efforts with the area.

San Antonio is the evacuation point for over one million
individuals during any coastal evacuation. We turn a six
lane express way from the coast to San Antonio (three
lanes each way) into six lanes coming into San Antonio.
Somewhat like turing the major "M"ways in the UK into
one-way M-ways into London. We are also charged with
housing over a million individuals during a coastal
evacuation. The vast majority of our communications is
carried on by amateur radio.

Your assistance and input on or off the mail list will
be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Walt/K5YFW

Hello PSK31 Users,

I just hooked up my RigBlaster, but can't get any intelligence out of the
system on PSK31 or anything else. When the speaker output of my TS-870 is
connected to the 'Line-In' of my Soundblaster Live MP3+ sound card I can't
get any waterfall using DigiPan, but I can get it by feeding in to the 'Mike
input' of the sound card, however, I can't copy anything. All I get on the
screen is random gibberish. Same results also with Zakanaka B7 and Logger.
Anyone got any ideas of what might be wrong? My computer's speakers work ok
through the 'Audio Out' of the RigBlaster and my transceiver works ok on SSB
through the RigBlaster's Mike connection also. I worked on this all day
yesterday and certainly didn't find this to be a "15 minute" job as some
have stated. My computer is a 455MHz PIII with 128 Mb of RAM, running
Windows 98 SE. I must admit, I am a novice at digital communications and
only became interested in it through these reflectors and thought I would
give it a try. Help!!

If you get nothing on the line input, either you have it set too low or the
signal you are feeding it is too weak. The problem on the mike input may
(probably is) that you are overdriving the sound card. try cutting back.
Other than that, it should be a 15 minute job. if you don't mute the
speaker and the output sounds good, no distortion, not too loud, not too
soft, then it should work.

Hi Carl. Computers,,,they drive us all crazy. :-)

I have several questions.. Have you checked your volume control software
for your sound card? Sometimes, the input to your card gets either turn
down or off.

When you are on "mike input" and getting gibberish what is showing on the
waterfall? If you seem to be seeing proper display of psk signals then I am
at a loss as to what the problem is.

Are you having to turn the volume on your xcvr up really high to get any
input into the card? If so, you might need an amplifier in the circuit. If
you have a separate DSP unit, try the audio output from it, because some
DSP's amplify that output. If not, then let me know and I'll get the url of
a guy who makes an interface board that has an amplifier.

Sunday 2 July

Been reading the reflector for a few months and I just realized that I
haven't seen any questions or comments about contact verification. To me,
contact verification has always been by QSL card. But I wonder if Digipan
et al have a logging capability that will suffice for verification of
contacts. If the computer records both sides of the QSO, there ought to be
a sufficient display of call signs, time stamps to permit ARRL, 10-10, etc
to accept them.

Two questions. Did the list addressing change recently? I haven't posted
directly to the list recently and just noticed a new "address"
psk31@bipt106.bi.ehu.es in some of the headers. I've been using
owner-psk31@aintel.bi.ehu.es for some time now.

Real question: I'm soon to be doing some computer upgrading here and part
of that will involve a new motherboard in the server (the computer I run
PSK31 from). That computer currently has a SoundBlaster 16 ISA. That's a
real SoundBlaster, not a clone. It does work fine for this mode.

I anticipate putting in to that motherboard my SoundWave 128 PCI. This
board is made by SIIG. Driver is Yamaha YMF724. It looks to Windows 98 to
be fully compliant. It will be running under NT in the other computer and
should also be fully compliant there.

Anyone familiar with this board and / or know of its ability to run PSK31?
