The fact that it's an 8 ohm output won't be a problem. The level will
be. Go ahead and use the speaker output but you'll need to drop the level
with something like a 100:1 voltage divider as described in much of the
PSK31 documentation.
The only other possible complication factor with some sound cards is
that the speaker output might actually be differential outputs to achieve
higher speaker level, in which case it wouldn't like having one side
terminated to ground. In that case, you will want to only use one line
from the speaker output and the ground from the mic input or use a
transformer to isolate it. In either case you'll still need the voltage
divider. Check your sound card's documentation.

Subject: [psk31] Common Frequencies
I know this has been mentioned and I know there is a page for it, but could
someone send me a list of the common frequencies that PSK31 is used on. I
acquired a SB16 yesterday and got it installed last night. I would like to
attempt to monitor a little PSK31 while I work on construction of the
keying line. Anyone with manual keying suggestions please forward those as
well as I am not sure when I will be able to pin down time to actually let
the iron get hot long enough to complete the job.

Well I acquired an older SB16 yesterday and it has no "line out" either,
but most of the stuff I have read says that is the card of choice. I am now
lost again.
Will the circuit in the May 1999 issue of QST still work for me?

Joe,
I've been using the speaker-out of my laptop's sound card into the Audio-In
of my rig ever since I started PSK almost a year ago. No problems. Just
keep your sound card volume controls turned WAAAAY down---both the WAV and
Master volume sliders. If you still get too much signal, stick in a little
attenuating resistor.
Unless I'm missing something, what's the worst that could happen from this
impedance mismatch? Perhaps, a diminished signal level into the
radio? That seems to be the least of our problems in this mode! :-)

The only circuit I see in that article is an interface between a
com port and a PTT jack which has nothing whatever to do with the
sound card. Yes it works, but the diode is only necessary if you
are keying a relay. If you are keying a transistor stage in a
solid state rig you can leave the diode out, though it certainly
won't hurt anything.

Your com port keys a relay?
Maybe I was not using the right relay but my com port did
not have enough current to drive a relay. I used a 4N28
opto. No diode and only one resistor to limit current to
the LED.

Jim Smith asks about PSK31 for meteor scatter.
I haven't tried it myself, but I am sure that MS pings, which arise
in the E-layer, are too highly Doppler-shifted (because of horizontal
winds at that height). You wouldn't be able to tune-in the signal
because each ping would appear on a different frequency outside the
passband.
