Hello everyone. Just so there is no confusion, I run a FT 1000D, that puts
out about 225 watts, that is why I can crank it up to 100 watts. I would not
do so if I only could put out 100 watts. I agree with everyone in that
respect. Sort of similar to AM. You have to reduce power to 25% of the max
because it jumps up to the max when you transmit. 73, Joe.

Has anyone noticed that the MBO's seem to respond to PSK31 signals? I don't
think that I am the only one who has noticed a PSK cq get stomped by a pactor
signal. The MBO's come up ON FREQUENCY, and to s PSK31 station that means
that it has picked a 100hz window in which to respond. This is not
conicidence or random chance. I also see this with Hell mode qso's. If this
is real, I believe that it is a very nice piece of leverage against automated
unattended operations on HF.

I think it's just that someone you can't hear activated the station.
MBO's respond the their call signs (or selcal in the case of Amtor).
There's no way they could be activated by a PSK signal if they're
using the standard protocols.

I'm confused. I don't see anything in the FCC regulations that
mentions frequencies like 14088 or 14090 and I am wondering if I
am missing something or if people are confusing IARU/ARRL band
plans with law. The band plans are gentlemen's agreements which
any considerate operator will follow, but they have nothing to do
with law, they are just gentlemen's agreements. If I have missed
something in the actual regulations, please point out where.
Thanks.

What I am saying is that when you cut carrier (with F5 in my PSK31SBW
program, or with any other PSK31 implementation that claims to be
compatible), you won't generate any garble on the end of the
transmission if the PTT interface is used. Personally, I no longer
send "pse K" on the ends of transmissions within a QSO, since the
squelch tail says it for me (it's not that different from the beep
that the CBers use on the ends of their transmissions on SSB). It
would be possible to work quick-break this way if you get into the
practice of hitting F5 when you stop typing, and it would be possible
to build this into a PSK31 program so that it drops back to receive
after a period of idles, a bit like VOX on SSB. However, I did try
this experimentally in the early days but thought it would be
uncomfortable to use, especially for newcomers.

Hi,
I'm running an Icom IC-745 attached to a Pentium 133MHz machine; it
works just fine utilizing Logger v7.04. However, when trying to use
Digipan, when I click on TX, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
When it doesn't, it just gives me a 'click' in the computer system's
speakers, and stays in rcv mode.
I am manually switching the rig from rcv to xmt beforehand, and back
again when it actually transmits.
Has anyone else seen (and corrected) this problem? Another friend who
is using the same setup as I do has experienced the same thing. I'd
really like to use digipan, just for the waterfall feature alone.
	Thanks in advance.

Go to your windows control panel, select "Date/Time" and make sure
your time zone is set to GMT. I keep my computer set to local time
and set the time zone to EST with a correction for daylight
savings time. FYI: EST is GMT -5. DigiPan displays and records the
time correctly in UTC.

Bye the way, computers are notoriously bad time keepers and I
highly recommend a shareware program named SocketWatch available
at http://www.locutuscodeware.com/ (I have no affiliation with
them). This little gem runs silently in the background and keeps
your computer clock synchronized with atomic standards whenever
you are logged on to your service provider. Perhaps if more people
use that they will send the correct time when they attach it to
their PSK signoff instead of something that is several minutes off
:-)

I have noticed the same basic problem when running Digipan.
I use a 686 233mmx clone with Soundblaster live. I also use
com2 as PTT control for the transceiver. The transceiver is
a Pegasus on com1. Mouse in on a ps2 port.

Sometimes when I hit transmit it stays in receive, so I hit
it again until it goes into transmit. Doesn't happen all
the time, but it only happens when running Digipan.

You lost me here, can you explain? This seems like a contradiction, you
are either set for GMT or your are set for EST. If you live on the
Eastern Seaboard, is there a reason why you wouldn't want to have it set
to EST? Most programs that I want, have a choice to either use the system
clock or let you put in an offset, like -5 for GMT.

I must have said something confusing because I'm doing exactly
what you said. Set the clock to local time, set the time zone in
the control panel to EST (GMT -5). Now the computer displays local
time on the task bar and DigiPan displays UTC because it can find
the correct offset. It occurred to me after I saw a second post
that was off by one hour that the problem may have to do with
daylight savings time. If you have DST on your local area, make
sure that the checkbox in the control panel display to
"Automatically adjust for daylight savings time is checked",
othrwise you will be off by one hour.

Subject: [psk31] Automatic stations

From G3PLX.

The comments I made recently were intended to raise this subject
again, to co-incide with the publication of a letter by me to the
editor of QST on the same subject. Although I was told it would be
printed in the May issue, it did not.

I raised in that letter the suggestion that we could solve the
current interference problem by dividing the RTTY sub-bands into two
parts, one for live QSOs and one for machine QSOs. To be precise, in
the "live" band the existing rules about preventing interference to
other band users would apply (and therefore a live operator must be
present to listen to the receiver and control the transmitter), and
in the "auto" band these rules would be waived so that stations could
use machine techniques without being restricted by the need to check
the frequency for ANY other activity or solve the tricky "hidden
transmitter" interference problem. Live operators would be permitted
in the auto band (for example to access a mailbox), but they would
have to accept that the automatic stations may cause interference.

This proposal gives both automatic stations and live stations
something to gain, and could well be something that both sides of the
present conflict could "buy into". I would suggest live operations
from 14070 upwards and automatic stations (and I am talking about
automatic Pactor, AMTOR, and packet) from 14112 downwards, with the
boundary-line to be decided. If, for example, we thought that the
band could be divided equally between live and auto, then the
dividing line would be at 14090.

The automatic operators would gain in that they would cease to get
complaints from live operators and would be able to link with each
other more easily without the need to check the channel. Both sides
would, of course, benefit from less interference.. I had originally
thought that this might be done by a change to the existing FCC
rules, but it could equally work purely as a voluntary agreement if
the solution can be formulated so that both sides win. We can never
achieve a voluntary agreement by just shouting "Ban mailboxes".

Hi Bob. That problem sounds like it is either a computer problem or
software problem. There is
a slight possibility there is a glitch with your software. Maybe try
re-downloading the software
again and see if the helps.

I have a Kenwood TS-450. Was in a QSO yesterday when the Digipan software
started to cut back
to receive even though I was xmtg. For several tries it would start to xmt
and then go to rcv. ????
Maybe the authors of the program have some suggestions...

This is auto keying using the com port.

I have used the QST setup with both PSK31SBW and Digipan.

You'll need a 16 bit soundcard though.....
That's requirement #1
That and a 486/33 or better PC.

I have run PSK31SBW on a 486/33 Win 3.11 and 8MB of RAM.

I understand that Digipan needs 486/66 or better....

I'm using a PII 400 MMX w/ 64MB RAM and 100Mhz frontside bus.
Nice & quick!

Peter,

The ARRL can not make rules, they can only act as a lobbyist
(voice) between individuals or groups of individuals and the FCC,
for rules changes they believe to be in the best interest of
Amateur radio. Their requests are sometimes left in limbo for
years, sometimes implemented and sometimes denied. However, they
can request voluntary compliance with a band plan and usually the
majority of operators will buy into that because it really is in
our own best interest. I applaud your suggestion, and have no idea
why QST didn't publish it in the May issue. Perhaps it was just an
editorial problem or perhaps they are weighing the consequences
very carefully before going public. What can we do as a group to
help? Who did you correspond with at ARRL? Perhaps 1000 letters
from avid PSKers would help get it off dead center.

Subject: [psk31] Laptops and PSK31

As the question on laptops and PSK31 is somewhat recurrent and needed, I
suggest to everybody in the list that is using a Laptop succesfully with
PSK31 to send a message to me: jtpjatae@bi.ehu.es with a subject of PSK31
and laptop and in the body of the message the first line saying:

Brand, Model, Operating System, (Optional) email address

and after that

(Optional) Notes about the setup

Example

 >>>
To: Eduardo Jacob <xxx@xxx>
Subject: PSK31 and laptop
- ---
Toshiba, 2140CDS, Windows 98, jtpjatae@bi.ehu.es

This note is not useful in this case as it works flawlessly. There is
nothing to tweak.
 >>>>

I'll gather the message during a week or two and prepare a new page, with
the results.

If somebody is using other "selectively friendly" operating systems as
Linux, in the notes it should be interesting to note the kernel and the
sound drivers used. It would be interesting also to put pointers to related
driver pages.

If somebody has not been able to put a laptop to work, please send also a
message with a Subject line of: NOT PSK31 and laptop

	Regards

	Eduardo/EA2BAJ
