I have just installed PSK31 and used it with manual keying.

On the ACC Socket on the rear socket of the IC-706, pin 3 HSEND and
pin 7 VSEND can be used for auto-keying.

My question is, are the specifications of pins 3 and 7 compatible with
direct linking connections to a serial port on my PC. ?

I would be grateful for help on this.

Subject: [psk31] Question about DigiPan software

I have a couple of questions about DigiPan Software and perhaps someone might
be able to help me out:

1. I was logging into the built in log (which is pretty neat, by the way),
and when I was done with my night's dx'ing, I wanted to go through the log
and write out my cards. I could not find out how to bring up the total log
file with all the entries showing at once. I had to use the search function
typing in the first couple letters of each call. Is there a way to bring up
the entire log?

2. I was trying to get the receiving window to show the actual frequency
that the diamond was on. I noticed in the help window it showed the
frequency on top. The best I could do by going to view and then clicking on
showing frequency USB is get 12, 13, 14 and 15 to show on the top. I am
referring to the black background receive window with the white numbers along
the top.

Subject: [psk31] DX'ing with PSK-31 - A more personal mode

As a person new to the mode, less than a week, I am excited about DX'ing with
the mode. Last night between 12 midnight and 2:00 a.m. Eastern, I was up
working the mode. I had nice conversations with German, Holland and French
stations.

Because PSK31 is somewhat like email, in that you are typing, and because I
am a pretty good typist, I found myself being much more chatty than I would
be on CW or even phone. I was just rattling on asking questions, telling
stories about how I visited their countries, etc. In return, I was rewarded
with real conversations back, learning about the guys on the other end.

Anyway, I had one heck of a lot of fun. Talking to people in foreign
countries is why I wanted to get into ham radio to begin with, and this was
pretty exciting to me.

By the way, I have several books that I got about 8 years ago that have
foreign language phrase translations for most languages. So there I was
typing in French and German phrases wishing them Good DX and good luck and
have a nice day. Of course, they were happy that I was trying to communicate
in their language, and that spurred the conversations on even more. So, I
had a lot of fun.

For DX, I jacked up the power to 100 watts and got good reports, stating that
all my characters were coming through. I did that because their signals,
running about 50 watts, were somewhat garbled, missing quite a bit of
characters. These particular DX signals were sort of weak on the receive
window so I figured that I could use the extra power. Anyway, it worked out
very well.

Dear Joe and other warblers,

Forget about 386 machines of any persuasion - they just don't make it.

It has been well established for some time now, that a 486DX-66 is the LEAST
capable machine for any PSK31 software running under Windows 3.1 and up..

Joe,
This has been on the reflectors before but perhaps it bears
repeating from time to time.

1) You can display the entire log in DigiPan by typing the slash
character, "/", as the search string. This works because every
entry in the log contains that character.

2) If you have the view set to upper sideband, go to
"Configure/Start Frequency" and enter the frequency that you
receiver is tuned to in Hz i.e.: say it's "14068000". The
frequency display will then show the actual frequency in KHz.

I have just received the following message from K4CJX. Let's all support
Steve's attempts to help and express our thanks for his initiative.
Steve has also asked me to inform him of any other MBO's that need to be
asked to move their scanning frequencies out of the current PSK31
activity area and he will also contact them for us.

This is a breakthrough! Let's try to make it work!

Thanks.

Skip,

After thinking about all this, I have called W5KSI, to ask him to move
from
the designated area. I have also again requested that Jim Corenman, the
author of AirMail, change his help file error (if he has not already
done
so.)

I do not mind doing what I can to keep the peace, but we expect the same
amount of cooperation.

This shouldn't happen with PSK31 if it's implemented as I intended.
The 1-second plain carrier on the end of the transmission should
always shut off the receive decoder BEFORE the carrier drops, and
this should always prevent corrupted characters on the ends of
transmissions. This means that break-in operation should work OK. If
you do get the occassional corrupted "end-of-transmission" tone,
there will be a few characters of garble, of course, but this will be
no more likely than corrupted text in the body of a transmisison.

Likewise there won't normally be garbage characters appear on the
screen just because there is noise on the channel between
transmissions, unless the squelch has been disabled intentionally.

If anyone knows of PSK31 implementations that either (a) don't emit a
1-second plain carrier on the end of a transmission, or (b) will
print garbage as a received plain carrier switches off (except if a
CWID follows), could they please either inform the author of the
program or let me know so I can do so. Note that some new operators
who have not implemented a PTT interface will sometimes switch the
transmitter off manually BEFORE the end-of-transmission tone, so you
will get garbage on the end of such transmissions which may not
indicate a program problem.

Peter, are you saying that PSK31 should work with the carrier
switching off between characters so that you could see text from the
other station if he tries to break in? I didn't think it would lock up
that fast - but I haven't tried it. It seems like the 1 second single
tone would be a problem in trying to implement full break in as well
(i.e. you would have to stop typing for 1 second or the Tx would just
key up again as soon as it unkeyed and you'd never get the chance to
hear the other station.

Thats great! It's fun to get excited about something new in ham radio.

Anyway, there is a reason people transmit on 50w instead of 100. Forget
that the difference is less than an S-unit and makes very little
difference, you are transmitting at a very high duty cycle, almost like
AM. Most 100 watt rigs are not designed for this. You may find out that
why you, "get chatty", as you say, you transmit a little too long and burn
out your finals.

Hi all, I had a nice QSO with a ham from Canada that was running DigiPan on
a 486 33.

It seemed to work ok for him.

Hope this helps,

I thought that was the intent of the original question but I guess we
are talking about semi break-in. It makes sense that you could do that
if you are willing to put up with the fairly long (1 second) change
over times. I wonder though what happens if you pause typing long
enough that the changeover begins and then type again before the 1
second single tone has stopped. Could get confusing.

You got it Richard! I understand that the automated stations ONLY
transmit when someone tries to connect to them. (I am sure someone will
correct me if I am wrong!) Therefore, the automated stations are not at
fault. The real fault lies with those who try to connect with the
automated stations without checking to see if the frequency is already
in use.

The problem sometimes is that propagation is such that the connecting
station doesn't hear you (and you don't here him) but you both hear
the automatic station. He listens and hears a clear freq. so he calls
the automatic station and it keys up on top of you because it has no
way to know that the frequency is in use by another mode. The only
solutions are to put automatic stations in their own band segment or
develop a technology that will let them detect if any signals or any
modes are using the frequency.

OK, I'll dive for it!

I don't think automatic stations should be allowed on HF.
The territory covered by an HF transmission is too great
and the chance of interference is too great. If somebody
must have automatic stations, let them be RX-only.

What do y'all think of that?

Consider this... Would you answer a CQ from a station when your response
would clearly interfere with a QSO that the calling station can't hear? I
think not. The automatic station may very well be able to hear you very
well even though the connecting station can't. Given the relatively weak
signal nature of PSK31, I think it's unlikely that an automatic station
would be able to reliably detect stations that it would interfere with.
Which leaves only one possible conclusion.
