Subject: [psk31] Question relating to Digipan
I just hooked up a Lectrokit PSK31 kit between my ICOM 725 and my PIII
computer. Kit works great. Using Digipan, I cannot trigger transmit
automatically. Using WinPSKSE, the software does trigger the radio to go
into transmit mode. I am using DTR rather than RTS because RTS is in use
controlling the radio itself (tuning, etc). I did go into SETUP and set
COM1 and DID NOT check the RTS box. Must be something I'm doing as Digipan
does everything else just fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I think the level of band noise definitely affects the reading.
Consequently I would treat any reading someone gives me on the air with
some scepticism.
I decided to check the output signal from my Elecraft K2 transceiver
running 5W peak (it's a 10W QRP transceiver) by decoding it on another
receiver. Even into a dummy load the signal was so strong that I only
needed a short length of wire for a receive antenna, consequently there was
very little band noise and a very good signal to noise ratio. PSK31SBW was
showing a figure of -35/-36dB. I don't think I've ever seen a reading that
good on-air.

The DTR/RTS switch goes between the serial switch and the
PSK31 interface box. Second point, Digipan will not

Yes the band noise does affect the reading in that if the intermod
products of the signal you are receiving are below the noise level,
the IMD display will simply show the SNR. There's a warning about
this in the PSK31SBW help file! This means that the IMD display may
not be quite the right tool to tell someone how GOOD his signal is,
but if you are getting splatter from a signal then clearly the
intermods are above your noise level and so the IMD display is a good
tool for telling him how BAD his signal is in a truly objective way.
If you do want to try to report how good a signal is, there is a
trick way you can check that the reading is really of intermods and
not noise level, by asking the other station to transmit a carrier
(TUNE), then offtune the receiver by 15Hz so that the single tone
tunes like an idle. There's no IMD on a single tone but the IMD
display still reads the levels of the products at +/-31Hz, in this
case the band-noise. Because the display (on PSK31SBR at least) works
on the mean of the two main tones, and there's only one main tone in
this test, the dB reading will be half the band SNR, So, if twice
this dB display is well above the IMD reading you got on the two-tone
idle, then this reading really is a true IMD reading and not coloured
by band noise.
