I have an FT920. The standard SSB selectivity may be on the wide side for
serious SSB DX work, and there is no option to install secondary SSB
filters (I guess Yaesu did not want to hurt sales of the FT1000 MP too
much) but you do of course have DSP filtering. For PSK I don't think it
would make a difference. To work close-in to a strong station without AGC
pumping you need a narrow filter in any case.
You can just slot in a CW filter which can be used for data modes. No
soldering required. I installed a 400Hz filter from International Radio. By
changing a menu setting to select a packet center frequency of 1170Hz you
can have this as the center frequency for PSK operation.
The FT920 has data ports at the back and when data mode is selected the mic
input is automatically muted and the compressor turned off. Also, the 920
does not appear to get warm running an indicated 40 - 50W out. It has
MOSFET finals which possibly have better IMD performance than transistor
finals (I have never seen any lab test results, so I don't know if that is
true.). I think the 920 is an excellent rig for PSK.
The one criticism I have read, and which I have found to be true, is what
is strangely called "blow by" on CW. There appears to be some signal
leakage past the CW filter so a strong signal can be heard at a constant,
though very low level, outside the filter passband. The DSP filter will, of
course, clean this up. It is just an annoyance. I don't think it has any
effect on satisfactory operation because the level is too weak to affect
the AGC.
International Radio makes a kit that allows two filters to be cascaded.
This is controlled by a switch at the bottom of the rig, and requires
soldering to install. I don't know if this cures the "blow by" problem
mentioned above.

an IC706MkII on PSK31 and had a real "AGC pumping" problem until (with
some help from this reflector) I "fooled" the rig so that I could use the
narrow CW filter on SSB when things got tough. Until then, a strong
signal anywhere in the "PSK band" would wipe out weak signals. I believe
there are some "after market" filters available for the FT920, but it
sounds like they might require some soldering, and I don't like the
sounds of that. Thanks in advance for any info!

I just purchased an Yaesu FT-840.
Does anyone use this radio with PSK31? If so, any
tips or ideas would be appreciated.
I haven't passed the code yet (I'm 2/3rds of the way
through the alphabet) so I'll be monitoring to start.
But this mode is very interesting!

That language is a probably a bit heavy for the list, but my sentiment
is similar. Problem is, I'm afraid the person who is responsible for

Luckily, as I said in yesterday's post, I had just read a posting a day
or two earlier about that virus and recognized it right away. The bad
thing about this one is Norton Anti-Virus (5.0 and 2000) do NOT
recognize it as a virus. They both report "no virus found". This, of
course, leads to non-trust in NAV. I kept a copy on floppy to see if I
can get out of Symantec why it didn't detect this thing and figure out
how to be covered in the future.
Unfortunately, my neighbor ran the program before he read my warning and
I just spent most of a day trying to clean him up. Following the
instruction on how to get rid of it
(www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/prettypark.worm.html) didn't work,
because, before we got those instructions, we let Norton try to clean it
up. That failed miserably. We finally restored from a recent image and
called it good.
I hope no one else was caught off-guard.

Well guys, I wasn't so lucky, but I was prepared for sneak attacks
like that screwball pretty park virus, I only lost very minimal data
as I just recently burned a cd back up of my hard drive, and formatted
the hard drive, copied the cd rom back to it, and here I am. What I want
to know is why for the Love of God, can't creative minds as this do
something CONSTRUCTIVE for human kind with this type of programming
knowledge, instead of sitting back on his spinless laurels giggling like
a school girl in kindergarten at the pranks he, she ,it (gender correct
y2k). Off my soap box, back down to earth, phew, now I feel better!
