Subject: [psk31] Microphones!!!

Hello Warblers,

Please take these comments constructively and think about
it!!!

Last night on 20 meters, I've never heard so much garbage
since I got interested in PSK.. One station who's
microphone was "live", was constantly broadcasting what
appeared to be either a television or a radio staion.

Another station was over-driving the transmitter, I ould
only get about 25% of his transmission.. I could note get
him to respond as I musta been too weak.. I heard others
contact him, and apparently did not even mention to him how
distorted his signal was.

I am in no way a " Cycle Cop ", and when I am talking to
someone and thier signals are bad, I tell them politely as I
can... It is up to US ALL to preserve this wonderful mode,
but if this keeps up, it is going to have repercussions that
none of us are going to like...

Ask "How does my tones look?" often, and tell others what
you see...

Think about what we are putting onto the airwaves before we
do... :-)

73! es have fun...

Robbie

Hi Robbie,

I might recommend if your on the Internet, connect to QRZ.com, get the Hams
EMail address and let him know his problem. This works great for me; I do
it all the time.

Same here, you can send a quick EMail and some guidance. It's really tough
with a rig like the Icom 706, where you can't monitor your signal, and get on
for the first time, kind of guessing how much audio you need to drive the
rig. I have both a Ft1000 and a 706 MK II in the car and with the FT-1000,
the monitor feature helps you adjust for clean audio. The best bet most of
the time is to minimize the AF IN, have no ALC, No Compresson!!!, and just
enough sound card audio warble to show about 35W on a 100W rig. Yes, I know
some are running 40-50 W, but for the most part, is the print any better? I
don't think so; play it safe, have some good tones, and make your fellow
Psk31 buddies happy. Right Robbie?

Keep up the reports Robbie; as long as we are courteous to our fellow
amateurs, I'm sure they want to know about overdrive. It's good to send a
follow up EMail with some hints on adjusting too.

Robbie, I also have Spectragram and use it to capture an image and send as a
.JPG file, so they can see the signal they are emitting.

Most of us are trying and yes some newcomers need our help.

So, keep up the good work Robbie and Happy Warbling
de N6DUR Bob on PSK31 in the House and Mobile. 73's
