Jim,
I have an ICOM 751A. The microphone connector (same as 751) is NOT a DIN
connector, unless that term has expanded greatly. The local "candy store"
used to have the panel mount connectors that match the mike connector (made
by CALROD and others). ICOM part number is 8S-S-E.

Have you considered going in the accessory connector on the back of the
radio? The only disadvantage I see (and I could not follow the lines on
the schematic well enough to confirm or deny this) is the possibility that
the VOX takeoff comes BEFORE the point at which the audio input from the
ACC connector joins the audio string. This IS the case on an IC-756. Both
low-level audio output (constant level) and audio input lines are available
on the ACC molex connector.

Good luck

I have one of those Ten Tecs myself--an Omni VI. However, my not-so-dumb
Ten-Tec microphone is wired so that the mike element is out of the circuit
until you press the PTT button on the mike. The PTT button is a
double-pole switch. One pole closes the PTT circuit, the other closes the
circuit to the mike element.

If you don't need VOX, you can probably wire up your mic as I described,
and that will solve your problem.

Since Ten-Tec Omnis have perhaps the best receivers ever made for amateur
use on the affordable side of $4,000.00, I happily put up with its supposed
dumbness.

Frank writes about the hot mic at the front of the radio"s.

PSK is not the only problem,,,,,,RTTY and other modes using the sound card
are also when using the ACC1 jacks with a Icom. or other radios.

The cw op and the digital ops do not notice this because they do not have a
Mic on the radio via the front Mic jack. Also One must remember the Acc1
jack pin four on the Icoms provide and Antenna for stray RF to get into
the radio via the wire connection when the ACC1 jack has pin 4 wired....MOD
shielding is a must.

So, Frank is right disconnect the MIC, Just a look at the circuit of the
Icom radio you are using will show this pararell arrangement of the wiring
of these two connections ACC! and MIC inputs.

Also remember distortion can get in via and unused connected MIC. or and
ACC 1 connection.
Again shielding is a must, use good cable etc.

It'd be easier to find the 8-pin panel jacks. The 24-pin accessory jack on
the 751 is a discontinued part and I've not had much luck finding a
replacement. Its not a Molex connector - it just looks like one. Does the
756 have one of these too? Maybe Icom's been discontinuing part numbers but
not parts. Hmmm....

From: Peter Martinez <Peter.Martinez@btinternet.com>
Subject: [psk31] The 14MHz PSK31<>Pactor conflict

From Peter Martinez G3PLX

There has been an Email discussion recently between PSK31 users in
USA and the owners of some of the Pactor mailboxes with which we are
trying to share the 14MHz band. Both groups were hoping for some
concessions from the other. During this discussion, which became
quite heated, some of the Pactor group laid the blame for the present
conflict on me as the inventor of PSK31, since it was me that chose
to operate on 14070 in the first place.

I should like to try to explain why I chose 14070. If you go back in
history 50 years, you will find that whenever a completely new mode
of transmission has entered the amateur radio scene, it has always
started on a band-edge. So it was that the early SSB enthusiasts set
up their camp at the top end of what was then the A.M. phone band.
Again in the early 1960's, when RTTY first started, the early
teletype fans started on a boundary, but this time the boundary
between the CW and phone sub-bands. It wasn't long before RTTY was
recognised as a separate mode and acquired it's own sub-band. In the
late 70's when AMTOR started, this too started on a boundary, that
between RTTY and CW. When packet started in the early 80's, the
boundary between RTTY and SSB became the focus point.

In all cases the expansion of the new mode has taken place by a
gradual take-over of a small section of spectrum, more by evolution
than revolution. I wouldn't say that the introduction of these new
modes has been without friction, but the process I have outlined,
because it has taken place without outside force, is almost by
definition the minimum-hassle route. The psychologists will no doubt
be able to explain why it's important that a "physical" boundary is
part of this process, but it has always worked in the past.

That's why I chose 14070, and indeed have suggsted that all
newly-developing PSK31 activity starts on the CW-RTTY boundary of
each band. By "boundary" I mean the IARU bandplan boundary. In an
international band like 14MHz, there is no place for anything else
other than the rules set by the only fully international organisation
that has been empowered by all of us to make rules. No other
organisation commands higher respect internationally.

The current conflict has probably arisen from two causes. Firstly the
expansion of PSK31 has been rather rapid and this has given a shock
to the system. Secondly the process of settling down to a new
equilibrium assumes that all the operators on the competing modes are
free to QSY to minimise the interference. This doesn't seem to apply
to mailbox operation. The mailbox subscribers don't have a free
choice because the mailboxes are on fixed frequencies, and the
mailbox operators seem reluctant to move. The qrm-tolerant aspect of
Pactor may have some bearing on this: it's a bit like the
introduction of "collision tolerant" automobiles, where the result is
not a lower level of injury from collisions but more aggressive drivers!

Inspite of this, there has been a distinct trend, certainly so in
Europe, for Pactor mailboxes to move gradually out of the 14070+
region. However the unfortunate result of the recent Email war in the
USA seems to be that some mailbox operators have deliberately chosen
to reverse this trend, and have said that they will move their
mailboxes down into 14070+ in order to force PSK31 activity to go
elsewhere.

From what I have said about how new modes have evolved in the past, I
don't think this unilateral move by a tiny minority of operators can
work. If this move results in an increase in the level of
interference between PSK31 and Pactor in the USA over the coming
weeks, then it will only serve to strengthen the argument that
mailbox activity is not compatible with shared bandspace. Aggresive
drivers should be kept of the streets or confined to their own
private race-tracks.

This is true for my IC-751A - i.e., the back connector is a great way to bring
in your audio and PTT control and to take audio output to the sound card. I
don't know why anyone would want to use VOX, it's just another pain in the butt,
in my opinion. I like the solid control offered by controlling PTT from a serial
port. I have noted MANY Vox PSK31 operators who have intermittent carriers
apparently due to misadjustment of Vox. The other thing that is disconcerting is
the momentary break that seems to occur as a result of task switching in
Windows. I have yet to uncover why that happens, but when you hear it at all,
you generally hear it quite often on that station's signal.

Neal is not up-to-date on the accessory connector for the 751A. I just purchased
a couple about 6 months ago. Unfortunately, I misplaced them and have been
hunting for them for the last two weeks. I think they came from Mouser
originally, but I am ordering a couple more from my source and when they get
here I may be able to tell you a part number.

One source of the 13 pin DIN connector is Digi-Key. Part # CP-1013-ND @

Another source of 13 pin DIN plug is R&L Electronics. Part # 401106 @
$3.95 (800-221-7735).

I highly recommend using this accessory plug for connections. Works FB
with Icom 706MKII.
It is easier to make the solder connections if you cut off the solder
pins that are not used.

Hmmm. I suspect that this thought is contributing to the present problem.
The prevailing opinion in the USA tends to be that international bodies
cannot/should not tell them what to do (UN, WTO et al). Therefor it was not
surprising to me that after reading the above paragraph, I then saw the
later statement that the USA mailbox ops have not moved and Euro ops have.
In Europe, there tend to be greater respect for international conventions
(EU, UN, World Court), Maggie , John Major excluded.

We have a cultural clash.

I fail to realize why PSK31 does not start at 070 and move
down into the top end of the CW band. It's legal in the U.S.
Is it legal in other countries? PSK31 and CW are both narrow
band modes. CW ops can put a notch filter on a PSK31 signal
and probably completely eliminate it from their receiver
passband. PSK31 shouldn't have any problem with nearby CW
unless the CW signal is very strong and pumping the receiver
AGC. There seems to be plenty of room except for contest
weekends. It seems like PSK and CW could coexist quite
nicely (certainly better than PSK and wider band modes like
Pactor).
