I do not understand why step (d) is needed.

Subject: [psk31] Kenwood TS570S setup
I'm trying to trouble shoot a problem with hooking up a Kenwood TS570S with
my laptop for using PSK31 software. I built a Lectrokit PSKI interface and
am using following pinouts on the ACC2 13 pin DIN socket on rear of rig for
connections:
RX audio--pin 3
Ground -- pin 4
Mic audio input--pin 11
PTT--pin 9
My serial port on the laptop causes the rig to go into transmit mode when I
click mouse on TX area on software screen. However there is no RF going out.
The LED on the interface lights, and of course the receive part is working
fine. I'm guessing that somewhere in the Line-out circuit in my laptop there
may be a problem.
Any ideas?

Hi Mark,
My TS870S manual shows that pin 12 on the ACC2 Connector is the ground to
use for the audio in. Pin 4 is the ground for the audio out. I don't know
if they are isolated from one another or not. Also, on the TS870 the mike
gain for pin #11 is settable via a menu. I would expect the 570S would be
similar, you might give that a try.

The directions supplied with the TS-570 are misleading about the connector
pin-outs.
Re-read the manual concerning connection to an external TNC.
If I remember, there is a diagram of the connector showing the pin-out of the
DIN connector. The pin number don't match those labeled on the DIN.
You may have mistakenly miswired the connector.
I don't know why Kenwood uses such a cheep connector.
It is very difficult to wire, since it lacks solder cups.
Be very careful wiring the plug. It is easy to melt.
They could have provided a prewired pig-tail cable, requiring us to only wire
the other end. What did they save, 25 cents?
If the pin-out isn't the problem, verify that your audio output is turned on.
Connect a set of headphones to the soundblaster output jack, and see if you
can hear it.
You will also likely need an attenuator on the audio output.
A resistor divider should do the trick. If you find that you must adjust
the audio output to too low a level, ambient noise from the computer will drown
out your signal.
It sounds like you are using a transistor to activate the PTT line.
Make sure you mount this in a shielded enclosure to prevent RF noise from
activating the circuit.

Yes, you can give yourself QRM if you have an AGC line that's too
fast. If it's so fast that it goes up and down on the individual
cycles of 31Hz modulation of a PSK31 signal, then it will actually
have the effect of flattenning off the tops of the modulation cycles
of the signal. And peak-flattenning is another word for clipping,
which is a form of distortion, so the signal in question will appear
to have bad IMD and will indeed be splatterring in your receiver. If
that signal is not the one you are trying to copy but is a little way
up the band, then it could cause you some QRM. And of course the
interfering signal doesn't have to be another PSK31 signal, just
anything that's modulating at a rate which the fast AGC-line can follow.
Effectively the AGC action is causing cross-modulation. It's not the
usual kind of broad-band cross-modulation that we see in amplifier
specs, but is confined to a band either side of all the received
signals, the width of this band being determined by the bandwidth of
the AGC loop.
We never saw this problem on other modes because we were never trying
to receive signals this close-in before. The real fix is to have the
AGC loop driven from AFTER the narrowest filter, in other words a
receiver with a 30Hz I.F. filter, but the next-best thing for those
of us with SSB transceivers is to keep the AGC slow-enough that it
doesn't affect the IMD of strong signals - especially when giving
them IMD reports!

In case any of you Kenwood 850S owners are curious, I've made pretty
close checks on mine and can say that there is considerable difference
in the three positions. Even the slowest one will give you a little bit
of IMD increase, but not as much as medium or fast. I prefer giving IMD
reports with the AGC turned off and the RF gain set so the signal is
below what the AGC would do. It probably isn't necessary to turn it
off, but it will keep the AGC from getting in the way of accuracy,
especially if there is QSB. Just look at the meter and see how strong
the guy is, reach up and turn the AGC off, and turn the RF gain back so
the meter comes up to the same level as his signal (gain pot goes down,
meter comes up).
Anyone know what that horrid signal was on 20m this morning? Didn't
have time to count the channels, but it had MANY, and there seemed to be
some sort of mod on them. It was so spikey, it took up a little less
than a KHz, I think.

Dear Mark,
Why don't you just signal trace with either an ac voltmeter or a with a
speaker and find out whether or not you have output audio coming out of the
sound card, and then at the output of the Lectrokit, etc. This is not rocket
science - all you have to do is isolate the area of the problem.
I could guess where the problem is - for example in the mixer settings.
However, it is up to you to narrow it down. Then, after you tell us that
there is no audio coming out of the Line Out jack, we can suggest that you
check the mixer settings.
