Subject: [psk31] Getting started with PSK31
I think Bob's excellent suggestion (excerpted below) should be posted on every
PSK web site (e.g., on a link titled "Getting Started with PSK"). If all of us
had been encouraged to start off with this simple technique, imagine how much
better our understanding could have been! The microphone and speaker approach
takes out a lot of the electronic mystery from the whole process for newcomers.
I use this very approach when demonstrating to a PSK newbie and it always
"turns on the lights" in their heads right away!

One caveat. Simple it might be, but I would be careful about the
quality of speaker and microphone used. We already have a TON! of bad
signals on the air. Many of them aren't bad because of IMD, but they
have the strong audio harmonic I've talked about before. A bad speaker
that emphasizes some harmonic content (ie small spkr) could make it that
much easier to put out the less-than-clean signal.
I wish we had just started this out with a 2khz tone, instead of the
1khz that many are still using. It would have led to much cleaner
signals for many.
Another problem is that, unless it is mentioned once every week or two
on the lists, newcomers aren't even aware of the problem. ;o(
