Subject: [psk31] psk31 - BPSK/LSB question
Many of the older transceivers were set up for using narrow band filters
in a RTTY position or the narrow band filters were really in the LSB
position. My question: Does it really make any difference at all to the
receiving station if the station being copied is transmitting in the LSB
position? Can the receiver even tell the difference ? I guess the
displayed frequency might not be correct? Now I know the station using
LSB will have a reverse effect on the spectrum analyzer display when he is
receiving others but that is local effect only.

I installed Logger 6.09 and it works fine for about 10 minutes and then the
software does not emit any sound when TX button is pressed. I exit and
re-boot and all is restored...for 10 minutes or so.
Anyone ran into this ? Anyone have the Logger reflector address ?

Stan, I use an Icom IC-765. I receive PSK31 in CW Narrow mode to use my
500 and 250 filters. I transmit in LSB with a 700 Hz TX Freq. You are
correct - the output is the same as if I were transmitting USB with a
1000 Hz Tx Freq. All frequencies are displayed correctly on the rig and
in the program and the AFC and Net functions work as advertised. The LSB
transmitted frequency will be set higher than the received signal
frequency by the amount of the rig CW offset +/- the AFC and Net
settings.
There is no reversal of the display that I have noticed. Increasing the
rig dial reading raises the pitch of the received signal and moves it to
the right on the waterfall and on the spectral display.
If you will work through the frequency relationships in your rig you will
see how all this works. If you want, I can send you a posting I made
several months ago explaining how to set all this up on the 765.

Hi Stan,
I probably won't answer this as some others more
technically literate than I on the subject but in
the meantime;
If one station has his transceiver in LSB and the
other in USB, then you two are about 2-3 KHZ apart
as far as transmitters go... How are you two going
to work that out? Like when you are copying
someone in LSB, switch to USB and he disappears...
I actually don't see where I would have benefitted
too much with all those narrow filters when the
DSP programming that Peter utilized in PSK31. But
then, I am not hunting down in the raw noise for
signals where maybe the top-notch filters would
hold off some of the stronger carriers. You may
want to try it at USB along with everyone else and
see if you feel you have to try to get more xtal
filtering Stan..

I use LSB all the time because my Ten-Tec filters are set up for LSB.
The only difference is at your end, and consists of:
1. The waterfall display will tune backwards. The higher frequency
is to the left instead of to the right.
2. You have to check inverted QPSK in setup.

I had a similar occurrance. Some of the macros had $cwid$ in them,
supposedly at the end. I deleteded them, and the program works fine.

Following is a posting I made several months ago that details PSK31
operation with an Icom IC-765. I repost it now because of recent
questions and interest concerning operation of some rigs in CW and LSB
modes in order to use the 500 Hz and 250 Hz filters that are normally
available only with cw operation. I again apologize for the length of
this posting, but it may be of help to some who are trying to sort out
this approach to PSK31 operation with an older rig that does not support
menu selection of filters. The IC-765 is typical of rigs of its era and
the general procedure should work for many other models.

I like playing in contests. So with the PSK31 contest, I got motivated to
make my first PSK QSO. Been hooked up for a couple months to transmit
(receiving since February). Anyway, didn't realize it was only Saturday and
only made 1 QSO, and it happened to be someone not in the contest, so we
chatted (I had to leave, so that was my 1 QSO). I had a slight extra
sideband on his display, but I worked it out and now know my settings and I
am supposedly clean. I did scan 20M a bit right after that QSO and did
notice how to see the extra bands on the waterfall display. A couple guys
had 2 extra pairs (with one I think I could see a faint third pair).
I had PSKGNR running, but wasn't comfortable yet so just used the PSK31SB
part of the screen. I did use VOX and after the QSO I did send a couple
Windows sounds out over the air before I turned the VOX off.
I remember years ago making my first 75 RTTY QSOs in the first ARRL RTTY
Roundup when I had just gotten my KAM. Like I said, I like testing things
out in contests. I know if I have a problem the other person can go on and
is not left hanging waiting for me to get going. I can find them later when
I have things working.

Thanks George for the info on running with the LSB on the IC-765.
I found the Cubic 103 to be a little easier. hi It has variable band
pass tuning which allow you to move the 300 hz wide filter anywhere
around inside of the first IF filters bandpass. Have to run the Cubic in
RTTY position. Guess I can get a few more years of operation out of this
equipment yet. I bought it new in 1981. It is has a super hot receiver
in it. Back then they played games on power. hi The spec say 235 watts
PEP input. Which is the DC input to the unit. I run it about 35 watts
output RMS and PSK31 ver 1.08 gives it a 19 to 20 db IMD which I think is
quite good for that old a unit, but have seen some nice 25 to 28 db on
the screen from some of the newer rigs. But seen a few 6 db ones also. hi
The narrow filter allows my AGC to work correctly and got rid of all the
background noise in my receiver. hi 73 de stan ak0b
