Hi to all,
Following text, I find it strongly recommandable, is worth reading,
as much as the software is worth trying...
Besides, for paragon 585 users (just like me) is just a gem...
Good luck,
Alec/SP2EWQ

Logger Ver. 6.07 is now released and available at
http://www.itis.net/golist on the download page. Thanks to all Beta
testers and all who made valuable suggestions on how to improve the
program. All known bugs are fixed, and there are many small
changes/enhancements (most of which you will probably never even
notice).
If you download and install the newer version, please read the Help
section
for 'Changes in this Version' to find out the major changes that may
impact
you (and your individual configuration). Many of the smaller
changes/enhancements are not mentioned in 'Changes in this Version', but
are detailed in the relevant Help sections.
As existing Logger users, you need to download the Logger Update file.
The
file downloads as Loggerupd.zip, and unzips as Install.exe - When
running
Install, ignore the usual warning message about the install program not
being licensed (I'll get around to that one of these days).
I hope you like it, have fun, 73

Check out this URL for a new demo version. Seems to have most if not all
functions enabled.
New display available by pressing ALT W. First press brings up a 3D display,
the second press
brings up a waterfall in full color.

Subject: Re: [psk31] Multipath Effects on PSK31 Signals
Hi Bob,
Very interesting note on multipath. I have been doing some digging
in the same area, looking for stuff in the literature that would predict
the effects of multipath at HF. [And it's there, both in probability and
extent of m/p delays with transmission freq. and in the relation to bit
rate, and as you will gather below, I have reduced them to an algorithm.]
As you imply, it is obviously very dependent on bit duration, and so one
would expect PSK31 to be good, with its slow baud rate. On the other hand,
it seems clear that psk is doubly vulnerable, in that both phase and
frequency (doppler) shifts affect it. For some reason doppler usually is
associated with multipath delay, although not vice-versa. Braun (Siemens
Handbook ... pub Wiley NYC) has some stuff on it as also does Freeman.
My interest has been to put a useful (I hope !!) multipath predictor into
the new edition of my propagation program SNAPmax, [oriented toward the
digital world in some aspects] which I am about to release to the world
(hopefully all dying to try it!!!!).
The question that would be of interest here to many folk though, is can
you make a comparison in the same way with RTTY and/or a TOR mode, and get
a useful feel for the "multipath-withstand factor"? As I see it at the
moment, PSK31 might be slightly more vulnerable than 45 Bd rtty, although
in your tests it would probably show up as worse , unless you could figure
a way to keep the reflector in motion, so simulating the doppler too!
[Which would be entertaining to watch, at the very least. I have in my
mind this picture of you scooting round the shack with a large reflector
firmly in the hand, while trying to watch the CRT. <grin>]

Subject: [psk31] Update on FSK31 Performance in MixW32
Greetings fellow warblers!
This will be a report on three separate items -
a) a FB QSO with Doug, K3DUG on 40 Meters
b) the latest update to MixW32Demo
c) some performance differences between PSK and FSK31 while using MixW32
Software.
(a) First, my scheduled QSO with Doug was my longest QSO in the FSK31 mode -
approximately 1 hour. We were both running amplifiers (around 300 watts) at the
outset, and so
we had good strong signals, thus making the QSO relatively free of Signal/Noise
problems. Nonetheless, we did experience some difficulties in staying locked on
to one another. There was no problem once lock was obtained, but we found that
the first portion of a transmission after the turnover was often lost while
re-tuning. My notes on that problem are confused, so I will ask Doug to comment
on his impressions of that problem. Otherwise, everything went very well and we
both learned a few things.
(b) The latest version, as of yesterday when I picked up my copy, of the
MixW32DEMO program is called 1.03/D. The features that I have now evaluated for
the first time are as follows:
- - the 3-D display
- - The Large Screen / Default Screen Option
- - The Full Color Waterfall Display
- - Setup parameter saving
The first shocker was that the demo version now saves your setup parameters and
macros, with the exception of the Personal Data Screen.
That is, the Spectrum, Trcvr, and
Misc parameters are all saved in C:\windows\Mixwdemo.ini when you exit MixW32. I
am somewhat surprised that Nick is "giving away the store" in this demo version,
but it can't hurt to get a broad base of users trying out the program.
Competition is what makes for progress.
The second shocker was the Full Color Waterfall. I could probably spend a day
exploring all of the ramifications of that display. No point in trying to
describe it here - you have to see if for yourself. The 3-D display is a
"ho-hum" for me.
The ability to choose either the HiRes display (800 x 600) or use the new
default of 640 x 480 is extremely important, because many would-be users were
completely stopped by the incompatibility or reluctance to change their display
setups. That is no longer a problem.
(c) Now we get to the more geeky details. FSK31 has an AFC problem, in my
opinion. Fortunately, it is not serious in a strong signal environment. However,
in a weak signal or low signal/noise environment, PSK31 will beat the socks off
of FSK31.
Here are the details -
FSK31 and PSK in Mix32 have about the same threshold of good copy.
Actually, PSK31 seems to have about 1 dB advantage, but that is NOT an issue.
When the signals are down around the threshold, PSK mode will stay on frequency
when copy disappears, but FSK31 wanders off looking for a signal and you must
manually bring it back onto the signal. This has to be seen to be believed.
There you are with a signal that you can see on the Spectrum Analyzer Display or
on the Full Color Waterfall Display, and there goes the little gray pointer that
shows the center frequency, and it is traveling at about 3 Hz per second. In
other words, if you don't manually stop it, the Center Frequency will be about
30 Hz away in just 10 seconds. Obviously, there is a problem with AFC in the
FSK31 mode.
Finally, a word about thresholds. My measurements indicate that at the sound
card Line-In jack you need about 3 millivolts of audio signal level to stay
locked on and get good copy. This is with the Mixer level setting at exactly 50%
on a CT-4171 Creative Labs, 16 bit PnP Sound Card in Windows 98. I'm sorry that
I cannot tell you the sound level in absolute terms within the sound card
itself, but my only means of quantifying the level are at the sound card input
jack with a Line-In Mixer level specified. I was also careful to have the
balance slider full over to the channel that I was using.
I also want to emphasize that these measurements and performance characteristics
were NOT determined over the air, but were determined using two computers with
audio interconnections between the sound cards. The software in both computers
was the unregistered MixW32Demo version 1.03/D.
May the Phase be with you,

This is a big improvement.
Contrary to my other message which may well have been a misinterpretation of
other comments I had read, ver 1.03/d appears to run just dandy on a machine
configured for 1024x768 @ 16 bit color depth.
I'm very impressed by the changes from the first release. The bold text is
much easier to read. The thick line average works pretty well for tuning and
I still LOVE the waterfall...that is terrific. The resolution (spread) of
the two phases during an idle signal is unbelievable!
I'm sure there is much to come and if it's anything like what I've seen
between the first released beta and this one, I'm going to like it ....a
lot.
Hmmm...where did I put that checkbook?

I strongly agree. This is beta software and 50 dollars is too much. On =
top of that you have to pay by check and wait. It is no current to not =
accept credit cards. I do not trust sending a check. I think he is =
probably honest but I do not know him and the use of a credit card is =

Until the program is really ready for release he should put out a free =
