Hello Bob, VK6BE,
What Norm is worrying about is the transmission over the power lines
of internet connections at high speed. The system uses up to about 12 Mhz and
some vatiations are planned for up to 30 Mhz. It maybe however that it will
not work up that high in frequency.
In the UK their radio authority knocked it on the head because the proponents
the North East Electriciy Board could not keep the interference level down far
enough. If they did the modems at the remote end could detect the signals
reliably. The interference level was such that it would make operation on 80 m
& 40 m impossible. However Germany has introduced PLC with quite high maximium
levels.
There is another problem on the horizon with VDSL which uses up to 12 Mhz on
twisted pair telephone lines. Beyond that is a version of DSL that will go up
to 30 Mhz. The various versions of DSL will need to be watched carefully.
The RSGB has been right onto the problem and hopefully they can enforce
standards that will not cause amateurs significant interference.
Our problem here in Australia will be the conflict of interest in the
Australian Communications Authority because they administer both land line
telecommunications as well as Radio Communications.
