Subject: Good HF rig for digital modes?

Gentlemen,

I think of getting a new low-cost HF rig for digital modes. Is there any
experience with IC707, FT600, FT840 (or some older ones like FT747,
FT757 etc) regarding HF packet, pactor, amtor, clover etc? Or maybe some
other rig in the economy class that would be suitable to serve as the
full-time bbs? Does anybody use these radios for ham digital?

Bill,
Sorry, that cable is used to program your HT, and is not a Terminal
Node Controller(TNC)

Hey Bill!

Nope - not quite. A TNC is a "Terminal Node Controller". A device that
goes between a terminal and your radio. The terminal could be a dumb
terminal such as a VT-100 or a PC running terminal software. It will
usually contain at least a PAD (Packet assembler/disassembler) and a
modem (modulator/demodulator). It takes the data from the terminal and
translates it into an audio signal that can be transmitted by the radio.
With the radio in receive, it translates the received audio into data
that's fed back to the terminal. Of course there's a bit more to it than
that, but a TNC basically allows two computers to communicate via RF.

You can learn more about packet radio and TNC's at:

http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/pktintro.html
http://www.tapr.org
http://www.packetradio.com
http://www.pacektradio.org

As you can see, there exists LOTS of info about packet on the I-net -
use your favorite search engine and explore.

Enjoy!

Hi, I'm trying to put together a good SAT Station
that can work both Analog and Digital Modes. I
think the 9612 would be a good TNC for the Digital
mode. If you have one for sale or know of one for
sale, Let me know.
Tnx and 73s...John (KB0KSA)
