Subject: GPS + APRS Question

Hello, I've been guided to this newsgroup for info on APRS.

What I want to do is set up a "marine distress locator" for my final year
project.
Which will comprise of many GPS recievers and some method of sending there
NMEA data out to my PC.
I found out about APRS but unsure how to incorporate it into this project.

Questions:

1) What does TNC stand for? I understand that it processes NMEA data into
information packets.
2) Does a TNC actually transmit the packets ? If not what type of
transmitter would I use and how much would it cost.
3) My PC will be used to pick up the APRS, but how? What device do I need? A
radio????? What type, and how much will it cost? I have a AR8000 scanner
could this be used????
4) Since my Degree is Software Design I will be writing a program to pick up
the data recieved by the radio(if this is what is used) what format will
this be in? NMEA or APRS?

Thanks for your time and please feel free to give any thoughts.

Regards
Tobias.
