Modem Transceiver that is designed to work with this modem.
It looks like I might also need a PC card like the PacComm
PackeTwin in my computer. My friend, of course, would need
the same setup at his end.

The question that's never answered in the brochures for
these products is: what's the maximum distance that they
will cross, and do they need line-of-sight? This
transceiver uses the 222-225 band, and produces 35 watts of
output, if that helps in the determination.

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi, I'm just getting into packet, but I am having trouble finding info about
it on the net. Is there any way to get packet to work with a Yaesu FT-50R? I
have not found anything that says yes, or no. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I have my VX-1 on soundcard packet.

Your FT-50 will do 1200 bps packet only. I got your four ring
spk/mic/data/grd plug (RT Systems) for the rig with open wires
on the other end. I'd recomend the Yeasu CT-44 adapter too. It
gives you your "regular" HT in/outs.

I connected these to a "Hamcomm" type simple circuit for PTT
from COM1 and the (stero) Line-in and Spk out on my sound card.
I then connected this circuit to the one in the HT's manual for
PTT (packet TNC) off it's Mic line. If you want fancy, build the
VOX circuit so no COM port is needed. Try AGW or FlexNet for
free soundcard packet. Else just buy a basic 1200 bps TNC for
under $80. It's easier and doesn't take your sound.

Thanks for the advice! But does anyone know if there is a way this could be
done on a Macintosh?

Soundcard packet on mac? no.

TNC yes. You'll need a mac terminal program.
Search the net for TNC to mac hookup.

Not true! There is a 4800 baud driver for the soundcard and FlexNet. This
is as fast as you can go with "standard", off the shelf Ham equipment, with
the exception of a very few 9600 baud-ready (and faster) radios.

The trouble with 4800 baud, of course, lies in finding someone else
interested enough in high-speed packet to bother with switching out their
soundcard driver.

I hope you have better luck that I have.

If you are interested in running 4800 baud and have trouble finding the
driver, I'll be glad to send it to you as an E-mail attachment.

Today, the Microsoft trust suit was big news on TV. In the course of the
report, it was mentioned that better than 90% of all personal computers in
the US run Microsoft software, on PC's.

I would not be surprised to hear that the Mac market share among Hams is
even smaller.

Pick up an old 486/66 somewhere, and save your Mac for personal stuff. That
way, you won't find yourself left out in the cold so often. Macs are great
machines, but they are simply not popular enough for most software
developers to bother with, especially within the Ham Radio community.

You can pick up a 486 system for next to nothing, if not for free from
another Ham who has upgraded to a faster machine. Complete systems,
including monitors are going in my area for less than 40 dollars.

You'll need a 486/66 or better to "do" soundcard packet.
