Swarm intelligence
For centuries philosophers have observed the collective decisionmaking of
social organisms, including human beings, and their often amazing ability to
solve complex problems and conduct complex operations with little or no
central direction. Most classic approaches to solving social problems have
focused on the development of central control systems, but the examples of
social systems that are able to function effectively without central
direction call those approaches into question, especially since the results
of using such systems have tended to be dismal.
Libertarian free-market economists and political philosophers have raised
the doctrine of "spontaneous order" as an article of faith, but it is also
clear that sometimes the only spontaneous order is that of the desert or the
grave. What has been needed is a more analytic approach, that can bring an
understanding of just how systems of independent agents can organize and
conduct themselves, and what conditions are critical to having them make
collective decisions of high quality.
Scientists have begun doing that by studying ant colonies, simulating their
collective behavior on computers. The teams doing that call their field "ant
colony optimization", but it is about a lot more than just ant colonies. It
is being used to find efficient solutions to the classic "traveling salesman
problem" and to the routing of data packets over complex networks. It seems
likely to provide the basis for a protocol for routing packets over a
wireless internet of portable nodes, for more on which see the WIPNet page
