crashes from lightning (like on a car's AM radio) can be a real nuisance.

As a test case, I asked my neighbor's 8 year old boy (non-Ham) to read
Randall's answer, and though he was unsure of what all the lot numbers were
about, the overall intent of the post was obvious to him. "He's trying to
help somebody", was his assessment. The kid is no genius, but he does
possess at least average intelligence and literacy for a child his age.

Have someone write one of the mental health organizations in your area for
you. I'm sure that remedial reading classes, medication, and some activities
would do you a world of good. My neighbor's kid's level of reading
comprehension can serve you well as an inspiration. It'll give you something
to shoot for, at any rate.

Aim high! Do your best, and no matter what the results, I'm sure we'll all
be proud of you.

Subject: Type of radio?

Hello Everyone,

I just recently got my ticket because of my interest in packet and
satellite coms.
Looking over all the different equipment and such that will be needed is
just
a little confusing. Could someone provide a little guidance? My main
interest is/are:

Packet/data transfer - not much for talking (would one of the "data
radios" be
    sufficient?)
Satelite work (receiving imagery, telemetry, working satelites etc.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hello John,
A packet TNC (modem) only uses one protocol and that's AX25.
I think you would have a lot of trouble finding a TNC that didn't have kiss
mode built in.
What you were looking at were multi mode controllers and they can use other
protocols.
If you have a sound card in your computer then you will find that you
already have the modem part of
your multi mode controller. The rest is provided in software that can be
from free to big dollars/pounds.
There is software for most modes. You can do it right now in listen mode and
see what you think about
the modes before (maybe) spending a lot of money on a hardware controller.
All you need to get is the software and an audio cable to hook up between
your sound card and your RX.
Perhaps then you will have an idea of what modes you want to use by the time
you get your licence.
A lot of the software will run under DOS, which shouldn't be a problem for
you.
I've lost my URL for a site that lists a heap of sound card software, but
this link site http://user.itl.net/~equinox/
should find you some software to look at. The sections on packet, HF and
SSTV would be good places to start looking. Or hit the search engines.
The hard part that I've tried to avoid answering. They are all good. I've
got multi mode controllers made by AEA and MFJ and they are both good. I've
got TNC's made by MFJ and Paccomm and they are good too.
I'm sure most people you ask will tell you that their TNC is the best one on
the market. Only you can decide
which one will suit you. The modes that will be necessary are the ones you
want to use.
Just my thoughts.
